View Full Version : Are you an organ donor?

Why are there not more organ donors?
Anyone think we should adopt a more "spanish style" system, in which one must opt out rather than opt in?
We have to do something about the disparity that exists between the number of potential recipients and the number of actual donors.

I agree with everything you said. I could care less what happens to my body after I'm gone...give me to the necropheliacs, even. And I don't believe all of that crap about how paramedics will check your liscence and base how agressive they are with life saving care on whether you're a donor or not in a crisis situation.

I've heard some very interesting reasons why people are not organ donors. one guy I met said he wanted his organs in heaven. That's completely and totally rediculous, but I respect that, in some strange twisted way

are you donating just your living organs? i have donated my body to medical science too....
i watched a documentary on this guy who got a heart of a woman who was a pro rider and he said he suddenly developed and interest in riding horses- the wierd thing is is that before surgery he was scared of them....

Yes I am. I think everyone should be because there's no reason to get all your organs with you when you're dead. Why let them rot with you when you could save people's lives?

It's pretty much just a religious thing, and we can't discriminate against that, even though I don't agree with it. I need to fill out my organ donor card. Now that I'm 18, my parents can't refuse me to, at all.
Reminds me of a story. My friend had a heartattack when he was 18, and shared a room with a father who was dying of heart disease but refused treatment due to his religion. My friend had to watch the ten year old daughter cry to her daddy, saying that God would forgive him for taking medicine. I found that the most heartbreaking story in a long time.

When I went to get my drivers license it had donor yes or no and to tick one so I ticked yes. I'm assuming that means if I die then it's enough to have my organs donated.

All of my organs would probably be filled with drugs and clogged arteries and stuff when I die anyways.

If you mean you donate to Sperm Banks, I found out those are illegal in Canada the other day haha

I think I'm a tissue donor, too.
oh, and did anyone see that special on HBO or something where that convict donated his body to science? They cut him up in these little slices from head to toe and took pictures, and put them through a computer. I think it was called "the living corpse" or something. Apparently, they used the pictures to create an educational website. It was kinda gross to watch, but neat at the same time.

when i first got my licence my dad actually told me i couldnt be an organ doner. When i asked why he said because if i got in a crash then they wouldnt try as hard to save me, which is absolute bullshit.
But yes, i am an organ doner.

My mom said something along those lines too, but I just shrugged it off.

Okay, well they're not really illegal, but the guidelines for them are very strict which means that there are not as many or something.
In Toronto there are three sperm banks to access. One is Canadian, the other two are American. Canadian regulations regarding the screening of sperm are more stringent than those in the U.S.A. If you plan to use an American sperm bank that delivers to Canada, you must choose a sperm donor that is "Canadian compliant."

So, again, does anyone think it would be a good idea for us to move to an opt out rather than an opt in system? Meaning that if you don't want your organs donated, it is your responsibility to go on record saying so. So, if lets say a homeless person dies, and there is no record of them saying not to, we could harvest their organs, respectfully (goes without saying). Perhaps this is harsh, but too many children die on that waiting list.

I've done research on this issue.
Solution = Xenotransplantation ... booya!
Nope, for whatever reason my mom wouldn't let me do it. She has some theory that I'm going to get attacked and my organs sold on the black market or something.

i'd rather not have animals parts in me.
in all honesty though, i'd prolly do it if i had to.

I don't get it. If it does the job the same as human organs would, why not? Of course, considering how respectful modern society is of animals anyway [/sarcasm], I'd have to say that I'm against the idea...any time animals and commercial interests collide, it always turns out shitty.
Correct me with the info if I am wrong but I am pretty sure even if you say you're an organ donor when it comes down to it they still need permission from a family member just like if they needed to operate.

If your state has a registry, then you are incorrect. If your state does not, then you are correct.
If your state has a registry, make sure you register, otherwise it will, infact, be up to your next of kin, regardless what you DL states, unless they are unable to contact them.
This is one of the reasons that we need an opt out system. I don't know who it is that wishes to make this shit so complicated. Whoever it is needs to stop.
here is the information you need: http://www.organdonor.gov/

I'm fat and out of shape, I drink tons of soda. Unless the person is going to die of anarexia or bulimia, they don't need my organs...but I'll probably sign up to be one when I'm 18. I would love to help someone in need.

i am. i don't care if it means they won't try so hard to save me. i'm pretty much a complete prick, so the person that'd get my organs affects society in a much better way than i do.
and it's not like i'm going to use them after i die anyway.
