View Full Version : why do you like pop punk?

poppunkinDC

i like pop punk because the vocals are clean, the instrumental portion is good, and they are not always bitching about things that are never going to change like government, i ask you citizens...why do you like it?

I prefer pop-rock, but a lot of pop-punk is good too.

Relient K, Set Your Goals, and Punchline are probably my favorites. I like them because the vocals are crisp and easy to pick up on lyrically. Guitar work is usually very good, and it's just fun to listen to.

This thread sucks. Listen to The Descendents.
Anybody who listens to pop punk has OBVIOUSLY never heard of the descendents, thinks that Hawthorne Heights are EMO, and kind of likes Avril Lavigne. Shut the hell up.

threadstarter probably hasn't since they advocate a nonpolitical stance which is completely stupid in this day and age, which is why i told them to leave DC.

poppunkinDC
10/06/06, 06:22 PM
so I should leave DC because the decendents have a non political stance? your an idiot. and the reason I dont like politics in my music is because I dont listen to it for that reason. and that dosent mean I have no political stance.

x togepi x
10/06/06, 06:38 PM
well first off, you really should be careful calling someone an idiot when you don't take the time to proofread your messages before sending them off. "you're an idiot" would make more sense than "your an idiot".

secondly, the descendents did write political songs. try listening to "cool to be you" or "sad state of affairs" or " 'merican" or "suburban home". you probably should pay attention to a band's catalog before calling me on it.

finally, your original comment made you come off as someone who's quite apolitical, hence my point. I realize that you can't judge someone off one line they said, but to say pop punk isn't political is a huge misnomer. Even Fall Out Boy makes political statements, and they're poppy as fuck.

poppunkinDC
10/06/06, 07:10 PM
im sorry i dont proof read my messages, i dont pay alot of attention to grammar on here. sorry for calling you an idiot ,i thought you were saying that i should leave DC because the descendents dont have a political stance, which would make no sense, and i was wrong for insulting you in the first place, .... i dont listen to the descendents so i wouldnt know if they did or didnt, and you dont have to have anything to do with politics to live in the district, most people here dont

x togepi x
10/06/06, 07:57 PM
nah, i was just referencing the fact that most bands from DC that are important (fugazi, minor threat) are political. it's where i'm moving actually.

i like fugazi alot... i think i have a hard time picking out the political parts of music, being a drummer i tend to pay alot of attention to the drum parts

I love pop-punk cause its sooo easy to listen to, and is soo damn catchy! And when your in the mood you can go freakin nutz with certain songs that you love

listen to something off repeater and you'll hear a lot of political songs, some about the first iraq war. ian's lyrics are more how politics relate to the individual than a political treatise.

edit: i know what you're saying as a drummer you have a hard time picking up lyrics. I'm a lyricist...i often don't notice basslines and rhythm guitar unless it's pointed out to me, so i understand what you're saying.

but yeah, fugazi rules

I love pop-punk because, well, it has the best of both worlds. it has that up-tempo sound with guitars and loud drums, while having catchy melidies and other pop sensibilities. And heck, i could catch 5 mobey dicks with all those hooks. lol. I hope someone got that.

i dont know why everyone gets so heated about what can be considered "pop punk". music and its labels are always changing. listen to what was considered "pop" in the 80s and compare it to "pop" today. DIFFERENT in most ways, but some things havent changed.

its the same thing as pop-punk. Screeching weasel, the descendents, some of the original pop punk. now, modern pop punk is what? blink 182? mxpx? there ARE elements of the descendents and stuff in the music of "pop punk" these days. dont believe me? listen to blink 182's dude ranch and tell me you dont see some similarities with some screeching weasel. its labeled pop punk for a reason.

and here it comes, some pop-punk elitest is here to tear me a new one about how wrong i am and whatnot. the above is just my opinion on why pop punk is what it is today.

A lot of music that we call "Pop-Punk" now is more evolved from Hardcore (via bands like Lifetime, Grade, etc) than it is from older Pop-Punk bands.

there's not really a set reason it appeals to me. but i spose its generally catchy, good lyrics and hooks. plus i like how in pop songs sometimes you can sneak in serious issues or use metaphors for something important without people noticing.

Because I was into hardcore (and still am) and discovered bands like Lifetime, Shook Ones etc, that were pop punk, but in a hardcore fashion. I fell in love with them, then got into pop punk stuff like New Found Glory and stuff.

Because it's unpretentious, has a lot more depth than people give it credit for, fun and got me into harder punk and ska as a result of it. Plus I find the pop-punk kids I've met are a lot nicer than the scensters or punx azz fuukk retards I've come across.

i like anything melodic :)
even some forms of melodic metal (parkway drive/i killed the prom queen)

i like the lyrics in pop-punk songs, because you can hear them and relate them to your life
and they make you feel emotional (be it happy or sad)

i just love pop-punk!

yodaplaysdrums

Pop-punk tends to be about teenage life. I'm 20 so have just finished my teenage years and thus can relate to the music a lot more than music about "guns, bitches and bling", mainly because my parole officer says those things are bad.

I like poppunk because it makes me feel happy.

And it's not just some angry person complaining about life into a microphone.

It's someone singing about.....Real things, things that matter, not just being a sad depressed bitch and complaing about how 'crap life is'.

That is all.
