i don't know how much you read up on the ltj board, if at all, but the dude dancing is responsible for getting them to play the song and from the board.

I can't say I've ever visited the Less Than Jake board, but thanks a ton for the link. I love the song, and it was great to see a video of it. I've been on the hunt for one. :-)

that made my night.

you're welcome dude.

if you want the story of getting the song played, here's the down lo

I told you to be there if you could and those that made it saw a classic show.

It was Yom Kippur evening and the band threw out 500 Yarmulkes to the large crowd at The Starland Ballroom. Vinnie played an alternate Howie Yom Kippur Rant prior to taking the stage.

After a few opening songs ( as with the wheel shows) , they did Losing Streak with all the recorded intros. Every song in rapid fire order.

"Never Going Back To New Jersey" was electrifying and hearing it in New Jersey was even more so.

The entire album is a modern day classic. Just look at that line up of songs! There are / were shows where you'd give your right nut to hear like one or two of those songs let alone the bang bang bang bang bang wrap up with Doug Hastings, Just Like Frank, 8 Ball, Dopeman, Jen, R & R Pizzeria ( with recorded intro) and Lockdown. It was amazing.

Then came the encores. With Gainesville Rock City, PS Shock the World, Rest of My Life.

And then a surprise. A big one.

Chris said that they were going to do a song they had never performed LIVE before from some Nickelodeon movie that was released a long time ago. He said they had a special guest to come up with them for the song : Kel Mitchell.

Next thing you know, from out of the shadows fucking Kel strolls up onstage wearing his GoodBurger uniform, and the band kicked off for the first ( and possibly last ) time ever : "We're All Dudes" .

The place went nuts, and Kel was like a retarded version of Skullman working the crowd and jumping around, The whole thing was a blur to me , and it went by so quickly. It sounded great, just like the record with Chris doing the original vocal and the band and audience singing the chorus as fucking retarded Kel leaped off the drum riser and stage platforms.

And believe it or not, ( as Jill Demakes, and drunken Danielle & Steph can verify), Kel Mitchell was played by none other than yours truly, Herbert J. Budworth.

What started out as a hallucination and almost a challenge / dare to play it this past Friday night, coupled with my stupidity and ability to pull together a costume in a few hours worked and worked well.

They actually had to relearn and rearrange the song today at soundcheck and cut out the one part where dumbass Kel goes : "what are we doing now, oh we're breaking it down ".

I can't thank them enough for three incredible shows in a row, and all of the friendship and hospitality that was shown to me by the band, the crew, and the touring managers. It was like I was a part of the band for three days and I will never forget it, or them.

More later.

keep in mind this dude is nearly 50

and part 2 to the story

I had really given up on ever hearing it. For years I knew how they felt about the song and while I understood and respected it, I didn't agree with it. But they all know that I always ask for the song. Always have since I first heard it.

But Vinnie brought it up to me this past Thursday at the Donkey. He said that they had almost all agreed to play it, but one person ( who I won't name but he plays the trombone) had reasons for not wanting to play it.

So I said tell you what, if I show up as Kel would you play it? Vinnie said if I show up as Kel I have to have the exact same thing Kel was wearing and be definite about showing up because they have to spend some time playing it.

I told him I'd get a costume together on Friday by noon and get back to him which I did. This was Friday morning at around 12:30. AM.

As fate would have it, I drove Buddy back to Laguardia Aiport from Long Island and we had a half hour in the car to talk about the song and stuff. He said he'd play it if I was coming as Kel.

Last night at Webster Hall I showed Vinnie the costume ( blue striped shirt and ladies size 8 white pants from the Gap ( mens don't come in white) , a Krispey Kreme Hat that I doctored up with the GoodBurger logo and two pair of pirates dreadlocks that I got at the Disney Store, black Van's and Voila! Herb = Kel .

The band is crazy, I am crazier, and it just fucking happened. And it was beyond great. It was crazy.

Tuly a once in a lifetime event and opportunity.
