View Full Version : Mid-Year Top 10's (June 2010)

A weird thing has happened this year: people actually seem content with music. Everywhere we turn it's, "This is going to be music's year!" or "Music is really hot right now!" or "Ahoy sailor!!" And while that's an awesome mentality, especially around this emo environment, the most amazing thing is that we still have a whole lot of 2010 left. There's August, November, and boy oh boy is there still December. I'm giddy just thinking about it. Here at AP.net we've found some real gems; it seemed everyone filled out their lists at record speed this year. Hopefully you agree with a few picks, but even more hopefully-er, you have some 24-carat albums that have slipped by our nerdy noses. So please, we implore you, tell us about your favorite records now that it's halftime. Let's all rejoice in 6 awesome months, and let's get on our knees and pray for 6 more.

Motion City Soundtrack- My Dinosaur Life
Neon Trees - Habits

Jeremy's list is probably the closest to mine. Frightened Rabbit, Titus Andronicus, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The National, and The Morning Benders all are right around the top 10 for me. Trash Talk, Daughters, Janelle Monae, and Broken Bells are all up there as well.
Edit: I am also surprised by the lack of Jonsi. Not a huge fan personally, but I thought he'd be on a few lists.
Quick thoughts:
1. Where are Jason's picks at?
2. Tao delivers again with the indie picks
3. Don't know if it wasn't released in time for the lists but no Man Overboard (note: just saw it on Thomas' list)
4. Tsai -- Surprised to see Blitzen Trapper on there, this album was pretty blah to me
5. Joe -- Skeletons at #1?
And I am very, very surprised to see Neon Trees on only one list, at #10.

Glad that someone is giving Janelle Monae some credit. That album is honestly the coolest thing I've heard in a few years.

These four definitely round out the 10 somewhere or other once I figure out where they go: Option Paralysis, Blue Sky Noise, Contra, American Slang.
Need to invest more time in Good Morning, Magpie, More Songs (Grown Ups), Total Life Forever, OMNI, Gifts from Enola, Life Swallower (Alpha & Omega), The Monitor and You Are Beneath Me (End of a Year).

Open Hand - Honey (people have to check this one out, it is amazing)
I absolutely love Justin and You And Me was one of the most underrated records of the past 5 years but its taking me a while to warm up to Honey. It has great songs but too much filler towards the end and the production makes them sound like demos. Listening to the demos from You And Me as opposed to the album, you can hear the drastic difference. It feels like Honey is stuck between the demo and finished versions for me.
With that said, the album is still fantastic and Open Hand is far too overlooked.

With that said, the album is still fantastic and Open Hand is far too overlooked.
i had no idea open hand was still around. ill have to check out the new stuff!

Shit. I totally forgot about that. A few other albums, too. Too many great albums have come out this year.
I'm glad someone picked up on the Iceland thing though! :-)
What does your list look like?
Haha, I haven't made one, and I'm not sure I have the time to right now, but I know from the past you and I have pretty similar music tastes.
I'm diggin on Mono, Shugo and Olafur from your list. I wasn't familiar with any of them before this. As you would already guess, since I brought up Jonsi, I'm a big Sigur Ros fan, so Mono and Olafur are a perfect fit for me. Can't wait to mix up my "sleep" playlist a little bit with those two.

It's a little high-flown, maybe, but it's incredibly enjoyable.

This year has kind of sucked so far. Waiting on The Reign of Kindo record to save it... Otherwise:
Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
Maps and Atlases - Perch Patchwork
Fang Island - Fang Island
And a lot of pretty good albums, like High Violet, The Brutalist Bricks, and The Soft Pack.
Hopefully the new Augustana, Arcade Fire, The Boxer Rebellion, and The Narrative records will all be good. After how great last year was, I'm shocked at all of the disappointments (Good Old War, anybody?) so far this year...
1. The Dillinger Escape Plan- Option Paralysis
2. Circa Survive- Blue Sky Noise
3. Tokyo Police Club- Champ
4. Minus the Bear- Omni
5. Dangers- Messy, Isn't It?

There's so much to choose from this year, and so much left to discover. Also: I'm not sure which year Beach Fossils came out, so I can't add it.
I wanted to add Oceana's new EP, but it's not an actual album.

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
Analog Rebellion - Ancient Electrons
Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise
Portugal. The Man - American Ghetto
There are a lot of other albums that have been released thus far that I like, but these four are the only ones that really stand out. Hopefully the second half of 2010 will provide me with six others to make a top ten at year's end.

Castle Builders
07/06/10, 07:17 PM
My mid-year top albums are as follows:
1. Eels- end times (This album will have you cry)
2. Mighty Midgets- Raising Ruins for the Future (This is what it would sound like if you mixed Strike Anywhere with NOFX and Millencolin. Real melodic punk rock! I don't know how a site called AbsolutePunk gets away with covering most of the music it does)
3. Against Me- White Crosses
4. Just Surrender- Phoenix
5. The Gaslight Anthem- American Slang
6. Murder By Death- Good Morning, Magpie
7. Act As One- No Looking Back
8. The Menzingers- Chamberlain Waits
Honorable Mentions:
The Riot Before- Rebellion
Meat Loaf- Hang Cool Teddy Bear
Biggest Disappointments (albums I had high expectations for that weren't quite met):
1. The Riot Before- Rebellion (Fists Buried in Pockets was an incredibly solid album. 4-5 decent songs is not a great way to follow it up)
2. Alkaline Trio- This Addiction (Playing it safe is boring. There is better trio music to get down to.)
Most Overrated:
Four Year Strong- Enemy of the World (C'mon this album is so corny. Quit exploiting hardcore. These guys have no edge and the lyrics suck. The only reason why people think this is good is because it's better than their last one. If you're into the pop aspect of FYS there is better stuff out there)
Man Overboard- Real Talk (I think these guys got too much exposure and respect too quickly. They put out some great music early on but other than montrose, their album was just average.)
And my most anticipated albums of 2010 are yetl to come!

I HATED This Addiction and I was supposed to get the Alk3 skull symbol tattooed on me since I grew up loving that band ever since Maybe I'll Catch Fire
Eh I didn't mind it too much, it's leaps and bounds better than Agony and Irony as far I'm concerned.

Seriously. I love all of their records. I think it's difficult with so much music out there to come up with a truly unique and identifying sound, but I definitely think TPC has done that. And I think this new album is far better than the EP and last album (which you could say a lot of songs sounded the same). This new one has a lot of diversity within their sound.

Not a stretch at all. It goes places no other albums do. And it has some of the more ingenious lyrics (yet again). I'm not even a huge fan of the band but I don't know any album that does what it does, released this year. We can see it different ways, but it's not budging from number one, at least not yet.
