Record labels don't care if a band is aweful, they only care about the number of units sold.
But I do love U2.

all they did was switch to Mercury....which is owned by the same company as Island. So the company is still getting that paper

It says in the article that they re-signed to Mercury Records. Island are complete idiots for letting U2 go. U2 is one of the greatest bands ever and they wanted to mess with it. Complete morons. Now the only good band they have are The Killers.

It's only a trend because he is so outspoken. If he was quiet, one would care and u2 wouldn't sell as many albums. So be happy people hate him, it causes more buzz about him and sells more alubms.

Who cares? They haven't put out a relevant record to anyone other than the baby boomer crew in at least 10+ years.
Isnt it weird that bands get praise way after they deserve it? U2's best work is behind them and with their commercial pop garbage they get critical acclaim. Same with Santana, the man deserved his recognition 20 years before he got it, but he ended up getting it for what was deefinitely his worst album by far

Umm...not true? Their last few records have been huge in the pop world. Music doesn't have to be groudbreaking to be relevant. Don't get me wrong, of course U2's first few albums were by far the best, but to say their last few records are only relevant to people basically born in the 50s is ridiculous. And Santana? The dude was huge in the 60s, the fact is that he is simply receiving a different type of success right now. I mean the guy played Woodstock...that's recognition for you.

The people that listen to U2's new records are top 40 noobers who drive around SUV's and vote for GWB. I agree Santana deserves recognition, but please not for a song w/ Rob Thomas

THANK YOU. has no one other than the two of us noticed how every single they have released in the last 10 years sounded exactly the same?
It was appalling that they won song of the year (for that song that sounded like every other U2 song put out in who knows how many years) over bruce springsteens devils and dust at the grammys last year...even though its to be expected since the grammys are the most horribly skewed awards ever given.
If i said U2 was awful circa the joshua tree years, then I would agree I didnt know anything about music. but welcome to 2006, anyone who still puts up with U2s shitty music is clueless. their continued success is just one more item to add to the laundry list of things I hate about America.

Assuming they'll continue selling 10 million units per albums, as they did with HTDAAB, that's still 50 million albums, plus another 10 million assuming they'll release a best of of their Mercury years.

So do you still listen to the same bands you did in middle school? Do you still like the same things as middle school?
I didn't get to be all about U2 until I was in college, and now that I'm out of college I might even be able to afford to buy my U2 tickets so they'll be seated next to each other. On the last tour, the only way I could get tickets that I could afford was to buy 2 single seat tickets across the stadium from each other.

I am not saying I do listen to the same stuff since middle school. I was just trying to clarify what I think was being said when he brought up the zubaz pants.
I personally do not listen to the same stuff as I did in middle school with the exception of Less Than Jake who I saw in 7th and 8th grade. But I certainly understand what you are saying.

So far the inly support I have seen for U2 still being relevant is, "OMG U R STUPID NOT TO LIKE DEM", but SydBarret is right...their last few albums have been the same crap over and over. Elevation was devoid of pretty much any talent. Isn't "THE EDGE!" supposed to be some great guitar player? Well...prove it then. He's been playing stuff that any band you all like could play (which says alot...[sidenote: I like some of those bands too...]) and there's not much substance to it.
Besdies...who the hell counts: 1, 2, 3, 14! Fucking idiots.

thanks, i thought it was a pretty solid argument, myself. yeah, maybe their last few albums haven't been on par with war or joshua tree, but come on, just about anything u2 writes is better than most of the bands this site talks about (99.9% of which sound almost exactly the same). the rolling stones haven't released a good album of new songs in 20 years, they're still the world's biggest rock band. why not just rag on how much they suck, too, while you're at it?

I don't think it has been their last few albums have been devoid of talent or originality, but rather that is just what gets chosen as singles. Look at songs like "Wild Honey" to see they are still shifting the status quo a little bit, even if it gets no recognition.

I think U2 is phenominal. With 170 million records sold, my guess is that I'm not the only one who thinks the same.
And for all you naysayers, not only do I think your morons, but, do you think U2 gives a shit about your opinion ha. They could just straight up not sign to another label if they wanted to. Do you think the biggest band on the planet needs promotion. They need promotion about as much as fall out boy does right now.

That's the only problem I have...I still gave the new stuff a chance (sans the last album) and didn't really hear anything new on it. Either it was following the newer stuff (ie. Discotheque) or just a rehash of some of their older stuff. Granted, not every band needs to put out something new in order for it to be enjoyable, I just think U2 over the years hasn't really done anything to "wow" me.
I've never really been a big fan of U2 in general...but I just think they are way overrated. I'm not going to say they SUCK due to their older stuff which I can appreciate...but that doesn't mean I have to like it, ya know?
Well, maybe their singles DO suck.
