Nirvana is great, their grunge. Older bands you should try: The Ramones, Social Distortion, Misfits, Casualties, and of coarse, Green Day. You just have to find something you like. I do agree that GC tries too hard.

Start off listening to lighter-poppier bands like Sugarcult, Ataris, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy, Less Than Jake, Sum 41, Something Corporate, Saves The Day, etc. I wouldn't recemend listening to Norma Jean right away or else you might get frightened. Thats what happened to me..when I first started listening to punk(or whatever) the first band I listened to was Poison The Well and then I got frightened went back to listening to rap.

But my theory is probally all wrong. So you could ignore what I just said.
