Set it Straight (http://www.myspace.com/setitstraight) were recently arrested for "protesting" the Redding Police Department shutting down their allegedly legal show at a local skate park. The band's side of the story has been reposted in the replies along with the video footage captured.

Some of you might have heard, but half of Set it Straight was arrested today for protesting the Redding Police Department shutting down the show in the middle of our set. We were playing a Skate demo at the Redding Skatepark when 6 cop cars showed up and demanded everyone to vacate, including the kids skating, who had nothing to do with anything (they shut down the park, as well). This was a sponsored event, with permits. The Redding Parks and Recreation committee came out and unlocked the power box, and set up trash cans around the area we were playing. The show was 100% legit, so we didn't stop playing, finished our set, and took our sweet time breaking down, but when they surrounded our friend who was riding the park and hit his bike with their batons, things got lame. He was arrested, no explaination. Harry, Ben, John and Tim were sitting down in the skatepark when RPD told them to leave, they asked why, and immediately they cuffed Ben. Harry told them he wasn't going to move so they choked him to the pavement and cuffed him too, along with Timmy and John. Later they also arrested Brittny and Sara for standing too close, bringing the total to seven. Harry's dad got most of it on the video mode of his digital camera, which is below. My favorite part is where one of the officers jokes that Harry's taxes pay his salary. What a dick. After the arrests, and multiple threats from the RPD cops, Harry's Dad, myself, and a few others went to Redding's Channel 7 news. A small story aired tonight highlighting each side of the story, but the overwhelming theme was the Sargeant's quote:<br><br>"The didn't have a permit. Bands of this nature lead to beatings and stabbings."<br><br>At the station, one of the cops said to Harry; "You're that band that played last week where someone got stabbed." He told them that definitely wasn't us, and the cop replied "Yes, it was". Awesome. When one of the sponsors, the owner of Johnny Rad's skateshop, showed up at the news station to contribute to the story, an officer told him if he didn't leave he would be arrested for tresspassing. Luckily, we were already inside with the reporter. Anyway, there should be a longer story on the news Monday, once we have the permits in line we can hopefully have all the charges dropped and then some, and the story on the monday evening news will show way more of our side (and if we're lucky, show the cops for the bullying jocks they are). All seven are being charged with loitering and unlawful assembly, and Harry and Ben are being charged with Resisting Arrest.<br><br>If you live in redding or chico, send an email to info@krcrtv.com and tell them they need to bump this story up. We can't let them just get away with roughing us up and kicking us out, especially since it was all legal. Send a letter to the editor of the Record Searchlight at letters@redding.com, we need to flood these inboxes. This is a small town and we need to do everything we can to keep the cops out of our scene, and if we can use the media to achieve that, good.<br><br>Needless to say, we won't be playing the Good Clean Fun show tomorrow... sorry everyone. Why didn't the band have a copy of the permit with them? Would think that would have solved a bunch of the problems ... regardless, this sure seems to be excessive on the part of the police - the video actually really bothers me.

WOW that's actually pretty amazing.
i can't believe it... he was honestly just sitting there - they all were. they didn't get up, they didn't instigate anything - you see when they choke him? he was just sitting there. he didn't taunt them or anything - that's unbelievable.
he has three jobs and such and they arrest him like that... it's very fishy.

Really? I've never had to get a permit through the police department - in every situation where one's been required, it's been through the city itself ... usually at the city hall.
Shhhhhh!

cool dudes, I think whenever the cops think they can use their authority, they abuse it. it also ruins the show for everyone and that's just lame...I could see if it was some backyard show where they are allowed to do it but they try to fuck it up...
and I think trying to say that they were a band that they played a show and someone got stabbed is lame too. its not like the next time its gonna happen...that's just like saying that one night at a club someone got stabbed and next week they tr to fuck it up for everyone else you know?
reguardless, some hardcore kids ruin it for everyone and that blows but whatever, shit happens and you can't do anything about it...my love goes to the SIS dudes and I hope all is well and they can keep rolling their shit like the always do

I am not defending what the policemen and women did because it was stupid and I know first hand how idiotic small town cops can be...but if these kids would have just left when they were asked they would not have to be taking it "up the ass" and they wouldnt have had to been cuffed and taken away. That video was also editted so there is most likely a lot of shit-talkling that you probably didn't see and if they had a permit they definitely should have had a copy of that with them. I despise police brutality just as much as anyone else, but this could have been avoided.

You obviously have no idea what the word 'protest' means do you? Grow a pair and learn how to stand up for yourself. The guys in the video have.
Also the video probably WASN'T edited. If you also read the post, they said they took the video in video mode of a regular digital camera. And most of those have a time limit for taking videos. I'm assuming that they just pieced them together at the end.

Just because it wasnt on a HUGE scale doesn't mean it isn't protesting. I can protest my math class by myself because I feel I have been treated unfairly and it STILL would be considered protesting. Read the dictionary and then get back to me.
What they did was protest peacefully by just sitting where they were. Just because they weren't fighting for civil rights DOES NOT MEAN THAT WHAT THE WERE DOING WASN'T PROTESTING. I hate you for being so ignorant.

My point was not that it did not meet the dictionary definition of protest. My point was more that...

You know what I said about protesting is right. It doesn't matter the scale, its standing up for something that you believe in. And in this case the people in the article were standing up for their written FREEDOM OF ASSEBLY. Just because they weren't fighting for civil freedom doesn't make it any less of a protest.

As for people trying to look into your screen name and find the "hidden meaning," I think that you think people have too much time on their hands to do something like that. Obviously nobody cares about your stupid Macho Man screen name to figure it out. But it was a nice try though.

They were standing up for their freedom of assembly like I said. They were there legally. They did nothing wrong. They were playing a show for some kids who were skateboarding. All legit. Because the police told them to leave without reason is why they were protesting.

that wasnt really protesting. that was legitimately questioning the authority of the police officers, which is something all people have the right to do when they believe (or know, considering there were permits for the event) they are being wrongly treated. you have every right to examine what the police are doing, and most of the time they will back down because they know they are attempting to abuse their power. sometimes, as in the two instances on ap right now, the cops are stupid enough to continue with their abuse and in the long run, they will be facing a shit storm because there are witnesses and video along with the permits to show no one did anything wrong.
I have been pulled over by cops before, when i was doing absolutely nothing wrong, and i have refused to show them my liscence and registration. i wont do that until they tell me what i did illegally to provoke being stopped, and theyve let me go. I have questioned police in similar situations as this one, and they have backed down. unfortunately, these redding police were too dumb to realize they were doing the wrong thing, and they will pay for it.
all you kids still in school, if you have the choice please take a criminal justice class. not only is it rather easy, since you experience the class every day in the real world, you will learn a lot of valuable information regarding your rights as a citizen and the powers that police officers possess. Its really sad that in most schools criminal justice is an elective, it should be right up there with math and english as a necessary course.

You don't have to agree with someone to respect what they have to say. See, I don't respect anything that you say because you've lost all crediblity to post anything educated. While the person I said that I liked what they posted, deserved respect because their statements were well thought out.

(a) Legally you must show your license and registration when pulled over. Failure to do so is grounds for arrest. I'd be happy to proivde a link to that law if you would like.
(b) "talking back to police" is reason enough to be arrested.
Eh, never mind...just go to this link and read. Points 1 and 2 are actually the ones being discussed here.

don't get me wrong, i completely support our local police, and the arguement that they should've done exactly as they're told by them is definately a must, but it just seems like a huge waste in effort, all those cops to give a band a hard time? The most it took would be one guy to go down there and say, "hey, do you have a permit for this?" if the band couldn't present or didn't have one,
"well then i'm going to have to ask you to break all this down" and maybe a ticket for disturbing the peace. End of story.

Since it's true that you are, I find it even more immature for you to have criticized what school I CURRENTLY go to. I really hope you aren't teaching that kind of behavior to your children. That is just rude and ignorant. It's the same as treating someone worse because of their social status.
I agree that you had some good points and that last post was respectable, but what you said about my schooling was ridculous. I really hope all parents your age aren't like that. Raising kids to be ignorant.
And that whole thing about discriminating against someone who lives in Livonia was even more immature. I can't believe that they're letting people with that much disrespect have babies.

Like, can you be 60 years old and still post here as long as you dont have a kid? What if you are pregnant, but have not actually had the kid yet? Does being married make it so you cannot post here? Educated in the law or not doesn't constitute the fact that some cops, included in this video have the right to be a bunch of cowboys rounding up a bunch of kids. There are civil and polite ways to do this on both sides of the matter. I think if some people law enforcement weren't so abusive of their duty to protect and uphold the law there wouldn't be such a backlash to the image of a cop in society. The last thing I ever want to do is live in a town where cops like this work. I'd much rather walk up to a cop and get something resovled without arrest before going to town on everyone involved and people who are questioning what's going on.

Well, this is a prime example of why absolutely nothing gets fucking done. Instead of trying to figure out the problem, you fight amungst yourselves... throwing personal insults around like your fucking todlers. First off, If your outraged buy this video, say it, and state why, there is no need to call all cops fucking assholes, cause for every shit bag corupt cop out there, there is plenty of good ones who would help you out in a moment. Secondly, if you think nothing was wrong here, just rebuttle the fucking persons reasons for outrage. The let someone with a legal backround join in and explain the laws..
Yes you have the freedom to assmble, but only as long as it does not disturb the public, and you have all the legal permits to do so. If the band failed to supply an officer with a permit they had every right to have them disband the music... They dont have the right to kick someone out of a public part for loitering (isnt that what a park is FOR?) But they do have the right to shut down a public disturbace (Excessive volume in a public place...). The band shoulda stopped playing when asked, and if they didnt have a permit on them, just pack up and go, and try again another time... instead, they are going to get the reputation of trouble, for something that was easily avoidable. Secondly, an officer does NOT have to answer any questions to anyone other than the person being arrested. The person being arrested has to know on what charges he is being arrested on, and his rights... It is actually illegal for the cop to tell anyone else what charges are being pressed because it can be concidered slander at that point, regaurdless if the person being told is friends with the person being arrested. Oh and for the record, Yes the choke hold looked disturbing, but you cant try to move away from an officer attempting to handcuff you or else its resisting arrest with attemp to escape.. even if its just pulling your arm away, so yea, the officer will not be repremanded for that at all.

yes and no. you have every right to ask the cop why he pulled you over. if he has no reason as to why he pulled you over, you have no reason to show him liscence and registration.
and talking back to the police is grounds for arrest. if they are in the right. but there is a difference between just talking back to the police when you are in the wrong, and questioning the police when you are in the right, or are unsure as to why exactly they are doing what they are doing.
if there is one thing i want to accomplish on this thread, it is to tear down the belief that cops are almighty and above the law. they only uphold the law, and they have no right to abuse their powers. Please dont blindly follow officers orders, but please dont think im saying you can be a dick to every cop who comes your way. if you get pulled over for speeding and you know it, be compliant. but if you dont understand why you are possibly getting in trouble, just think about what is happening and question the situation you are in, rather than potentially getting ticketed or arrested for something that doesnt warrant either.

Oh never mind. If you did not get my point the first time, you probably will not get it even after I explain it.
Clearly there is a reason that you go to Grand Valley and not a real school.
(1) I payed my own way through school by working two jobs and taking out student loans.
(2) It does have a connection to this thread because I was trying to determine how you could be such an idiot. I found my answer in your profile.
(3) Can you tell me what these kids were protesting? What crime on humanity were they standing up against? Police told them to leave and they refused. So...they were standing up against the police being able to tell people to leave? I just dont quite undertand the cause they were protesting for. If they were having a sit it against anything...abortion, legalization of drugs, the war...pick a cause, then I might agree with you. They were just being stupid and certainly should not be held up as some kind of heros or as "having balls".
you're a royal piece of crap. how do you say someone is stupid for going to a community college instead of a "real college"? i go to a community college. the funny thing is when i graduate college i won't have between 50 and 200 thousand dollars of student loans to pay off. i'll have the same education as you. i'm going to school for 500 dollars a semester right now and learning the same material for a fraction of the price. In the two years that i'm paying 500 dollars a semester, i'll be able to save enough money to pay cash for a "real college". at the same time, in the past year I've bought a new drumset, a new guitar, a new half stack, a new motorcycle and I supported myself living on my own. now please... tell me how that makes you smarter than me.

How does having a community college education differ from a huge university? The college I go to is a community college. I don't see where I'm getting shafted into my education if I'm learning things that are making me a better person in the long run. I've learned more in my sociology/psychology/interpersonal commuications/writing class than I have throughout my entire 19 year exsistence. What I've learned in each class is going to benefit me when I graduate and get a job in the field I'm studying and when I become a parent. Most of the professors at my school also teach at a bigger university in the area and one directly even told me (I had thought about transferring) to stay because the material she was teaching me was the EXACT same material she was teaching at the university only the students were paying double than what I was paying for the class.

What I said is true though. Education is all about what you personally let yourself take from it. You could go to the best university in the country and not learn a thing and not take anything from it if you let yourself be that way, or you could go to the crappiest and lowest of the community colleges and try to take every single thing you can from it and try to add it into your life. I'd rather do the later than the former.
Yes, most times you can't say crap on this site and not get shit for it, I get it daily from users, mostly because I chose what I want to add to the site and I don't backdown from it after I posted it, and partly because I'm the only girl and this place isn't somewhere a girl should be (and partly because of who I date too.) But it doesn't matter to me. Seeing that I tick people off daily is what fuels me to keep going and to keep finding things to post that'll get a rise out of people. (Yet another thing I learned at a community college!)

Shit. You are right. I apologize for my GVSU comment. The cops were still justified in this case though. That I will not change my opinion on.

I agree with everything you said here. Except your spelling of Livonia. Everything else though...
Also. They make your dad go all the way from Texas to Michigan once a month for Army Reserve? Thats a rough travel schedule. Props to him for helping defend this country. I will admit that I do NOT have the balls to join the military.
naw, my mom still lives in OK, so i go down there to see her quite a bit, and that's where i'm from. my dad lives in MI. it's only about a 1-2 hour i drive, i think. not so bad. he got promoted to CW3 (about equivalent to a Major in the regular Army), so he wanted to stay the head officer, or else he would have gone to a closer unit.
EDIT: and ya, for some reason i've seen it spelled with both an A and an I before, so I kinda switched around i think haha. wasn't really thinking about it.
and sorry to be so harsh about it, i just thought the blows about being from Livonia and about attending Grand Valley were irrelevant and just kind of mean. I don't like mean people, they're no fun, ya know?

I don't really think the cops were justified either. They could atleast been a little more civil. They were more rough than they needed to be, said things they shouldn't have said, and were very unprofessional. Extremely unprofessional. While I, as well as, I hope, most other people here, ackowledge that nothing will probably come of this for them, that doesn't mean they don't deserve it. They gave no explanation for what they were doing, they were rude and arrogant, they left no room for explanation which is completely uncalled for. Therefore, imo, it should have been them having their faces slammed onto the concrete. Not for standing around, but for being unprofessional, power-absuing asswipes.

No it's totally your own opinion of the matter. You're justified in having it.

In fact, please clarify this for all of us just so others know when they have to stop posting here. is it just having a kid? Like, can you be 60 years old and still post here as long as you dont have a kid? What if you are pregnant, but have not actually had the kid yet? Does being married make it so you cannot post here? Obviously being in college is ok. How about grad school? Im just trying to make sure everyone is clear here.
this guy is awesome.

going to school about a hour south of there (chico state), this really hits me... these guys are good friends with the band that i'm doing some bass work for, and its sickening, for whatever the legality of the event was, that this is happening. The news blurb was lame... please write in to the posted emails. thanks
