Hey Sting, can you say 'pretentious?'
Someone crank up some Every Time I Die for him.

Actually, I read the article.
He's 100% accurate about the music he's probably hearing (shitty pop-rock). Someone get this man into basements and clubs across America and out of the Double Luxury Super Suite in the giant arenas.
If I listened to Nickelback and shit all day, I'd be saying the same thing.

This is the root of the problem. What is he listening to? Radio sucks. Underground music is where all of the creativity seems to be. Not just necessarily in the "scene" either. Good music is out there, you just have to look for it. But seriously, radio sucks. Tell him to listen to Straylight Run, Brandston, Lorene Drive, or TREOS.(I know, I know, these bands are sooooo last year. Sue me)
Funny enough, I think that the new Taking Back Sunday and LostProphets' albums take after the Police. Maybe thats boring for him, but certainly not for me.

I wrote this (http://intunemusic.wordpress.com/2006/08/01/they-dont-make-music-like-they-used-to-is-false/) awhile back.

the problem with this is basically everything. it steams from the mainstreams, the commercialized bands which are on the forefront representing the musical culutre today. they are often trash that match a certain image or give into a certain sound to sell records. i lot of them don't have heart. there are a few exceptions of course. i always wonder if mr. bob dylan has ever heard of ryan adams or bright eyes, two artists who have been deemed either heavily influenced by bob's music or been just called the next bob dylan. i wonder if bruce springsteen and tom petty have taken listen to will hoge, lucero, and gasoline heart. all the bands that are worth listening to get nowhere. pop culture is misrepresented completely because of the awful music we have on the forefront. we have so many solid bands today, and i wouldn't put them up against the bands of the past but next to them as the bands worthy of carrying on where they left off.

"Rock music has come to a standstill, it's not going forward anymore"
Wow, I might actually be agreeing with Sting. The majority of rock music is kind of lame right now, from the commercial stuff all the way down to whatever scene you might be a part of, from mall-punk/emo to cmj fest indie.
For me, the biggest problem is its not fun anymore. I'm tired of concept albums, and epic arena anthems, and Angels and Airwaves trying to save the universe through delay pedals and phasers.

I would hope people care about what he thinks. Even if you don't like him you have to respect him. He's one of the most influentual artists to come out of the 80's and maybe even the Rock/Alternative genre.

Who cares what this old bag of farts thinks, I think this scene or most of what is covered here at AP is very eclectic and accepts the most variety of all types of music, but someone like Sting would never hear or fathom the majority of bands that 'we' listen to and love. Of course mainstream music is boring, it always has been.

everything Sting has done solo has bored me, so what?
when will artists learn to shut up about other artists or the music scene in general?
no one cares.
no one's opinion about today's rock music will be altered in the least by his saying all that.
therefore, this makes that entire article completely pointless.
why do people [popular musicians] do this? i don't get it. can anyone explain it to me?
:-D LOL that guy just asked who Sting is.
And he said this because he was giving an interview, and it is customary for people to express themselves in interviews. Mr. Sting feels that today's rock is a bore, and therefore he said so. He wasn't bashing anyone, just basically voicing his opinion, which also happens to be the truth. I feel sorry for anyone who believes Hinder and Nickelback are pushing rock music forward.

I'm sure Bob Dylan had heard of Bright Eyes. I am actually almost positive....Conor Oberst could be as big as he wants to be....

I've gotta agree with him on this one. Nowadays we have our Beatles, Johnny Cash, Police, Clash, New York Dolls, Nirvanas, Operation Ivys who were all stepping stones in rock. Very little of the music made nowadays that's mainstream will have listening value 30 years down the road. There are some innovative bands out there, but it's hard. So much has already been done with 2 guitars, a bass, and drums.
