Brand New (http://www.fightoffyourdemons.com) have posted "Sowing Season (Yeah)" from their new album, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, on their MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/brandnew) page. Thoughts?

Edit: If the official player doesn't work - try here (http://www.myspace.com/absolutepunk). - JT

maybe it's because i've seen it played live before and have heard a lot of the live recordings, but it's not what i expected. i really like it and i think the people that don't like it will come around after a few listens. something about the vocals seems a bit odd though, and i can't put my finger on it. The productions kinda shoddy ... displayed interestingly in the mix. I also don't think the lyrics are a up to expectations.

Probably my least favorite track on the cd ... and Jared, if you listen you've broken your word! You can't download this! Sucka.

yea, talk about drastic.

anyway, I think the vocals in the verses scream Conor Oberst, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Much heavier than I thought it would turn out, I dig it. I will admit though that I absolutely hate that screaming part that comes right before the bridge, which is also the same part that ends the song....something about the notes, I just cringe when I hear it. Otherwise it's a pretty badass song.

It's losing all my friends.
Was losing them to drinking and to driving.
Was losing all my friends, but I got'em back.
I am on the mend.
At least now I can say that I am trying.
And I hope you will forget the things I still lack.

Yeah.
Yeah.

Is it in you now?
To better hear the truth that you have spoken?
Twisted up by names.
Its been a trap for fools.
Is it in you now?
To watch the things you gave you life to broken?
You sleep and build in mud.
With water tools.

Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, Yeah.

Nothing gets her back.
A whisper from her father couldn't fix it.
He whispers like a bridge, was a river span.
And he'll take all that you have.
And turn it into something you were missing.
Somebody threw that brick...
Shared all your plans.

Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, Yeah.

Time to get the seeds into the (cold?) now.
Takes a while to grow anything.
Before its coming to an end.
Before you put my body in the (cold?) now.
Take some time and work it with your hands.
Before its coming to an end.
Its coming to an end.

Do you miss the blend?
The colors she left in your black and white feet(field)?
Do you feel condemned, just for being there?

I am not your friend.
I am just a man who knows how it feels.
I am not your friend.
I'm not your lover.
I'm not your family.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, Yeah.

Time to get the seeds into the (cold?) now.
It takes awhile just to grow anything.

Very interesting considering those who earlier were saying Brand New was better than Nirvana. Them taking a page from the "grunge" manuel and others noticing it makes the irony quite thick.

Basically someone said they had heard the song on a Kansas City radio station. So people started calling the radio station at like 1 in the morning asking for them if they had the song or if they would play it again. There was a lot of people wondering if this guy was just playing a joke on us and lying that the song was played, and Jason Tate said it was impossible that a station would have the song already. After the calls were made, the station never played it again, but it was played at like 630 yesterday...guess he wasn't lying after all

No difference .. if they didn't make TRL before with the song/video .. they wouldn't now.

Ideas on how this will do on radio?

I don't think it'll do well .. I don't see many people being into it .. there's no real chorus (beside "yeah, yeah.. yeeeeah") - so I don't really seeing it blow up.

there not going to be a fall out boy break out, but on a radio station like xpn...this song is going to be like the holy fucking grail for them. they fell in love with the format, and i could see brand new being their next obsession. i think overall this record is going to do exceptionally well like all their previous efforts, without the use of too much mainstream promotion. i am betting that this will have one hell of a first week. that's for damn sure.

werent they scared of blowing up? could that be why they picked this song instead of something else?
Bands don't pick singles. Especially first singles.

I've been telling people all week that it's a horrible choice (by the label) for a single, especially if they've "always wanted this to be a monster" like they've said in the past. I wonder if they'll just be one of those massive underground bands with a cult-like following, but never fully break through. Guess we'll have to just wait and see what happens with this.

I think it'll last on the radio until the album comes out because the massive cult of BN fans will badger their respective radio stations to play the song over and over until they can do it themselves at home. I sort of disagree about the chorus though ... the "before it's coming to an end" part sticks out for me and I could see it catching, maybe?

As for the song, I like it a lot, but am hoping that it's one of the weaker tracks on the album because my expectations are definitely high. I think it sounds good though...very big.

saosin sold 35k, the early november even came in at around 25k, underoath sold a fuckload(for lack of an exact number, and senses fail did something inbetween the three. brand new has a larger fan base than all of these bands, and they have a reputation the size of jon wark's ego from their previous record. if it sells only 15k i think that'd be a sad sad day in the world of music.

Uh .. Saosin has been touring for 3 years + all kinds of promo, early november has been touring for 3 years and has a shit load of promo, same for allllll of the above bands.

I really, really, really think people are over estimating the band on what their fanbase is. Their two albums COMBINED have only sold 750,000 copies. I really don't expect this to be a "huge number" album.

From what I've heard, not one of these songs fits that description. Obviously I haven't heard the entire album, so I may be eating my words in the near future.

Very interesting considering those who earlier were saying Brand New was better than Nirvana. Them taking a page from the "grunge" manuel and others noticing it makes the irony quite thick.

Foo Fighters + Bright Eyes + Kevin Devine + Cobain

Is how I'd probably describe the new album. "In Your Honor" comes to mind.

You've got the whole thing already? Cool. Questions:

Favorite song?
You said "In Your Honor" came to mind. Are you talking about the heavier elements of it, or the sonic atmosphere of some of the songs (at least I felt some songs had atmospheric parts)?
How do you feel about the album as a whole? Top 5? 10? None at all?

Plus, the musical bar has been raised in the past few years. Thrice, Say Anything ... set the bar pretty high.

Uh-oh. I only said 4 songs sound similar..and you have the album and you agree.

SHHHHIIITTTT. haha.

But I dont know, I'm still going into this whole album with an open mind. Not judging off demos, not judging off Deja. I like listening to music that way....I couldn't believe someone on staff had already put MCR in their top 3 before they heard it. I'm just like...wha?
Who did that?

I completely changed in my tastes between MCR albums .. cause I really liked their last one when it came out .. played it all the time .. and this one I'm "eh" on. It reminds me of Louder Now for some reason .. where it's fun to play everyonce in a while ... but nothing more.

Hmm... I still don't buy it. I don't think enough people will know about the album for the first week - but that may also depend on when it leaks. I hope I'm wrong - because it will cause a shit storm in the record industry if it sells 60k. But I dunno ... we'll see.
We'll see. I've seen word of mouth marketing be the most powerful form of advertising (or lack there of) many times. I think with a band like BN and the impact Deja had, there's enough people anticipating this to launch it into the 60k range. It's an ambitious guess, but I've underestimated them before and their fanbase always suprises me.

I think the production of this song is really holding me back on liking it. It sounds sort of lifeless, maybe not the choruses so much, but the verses with all the instruments sound really plain. The demo with just the acoustic had that raw personal feeling to it.

Tate,
First, thanks for providing me as well as about 100k others a great website. (IMO)
Second, I agree with you that the lyrics are lacking somewhat.
Third, I am currently enjoying the song for two reasons: It's new and it's Brand New. Granted, later on it might be my as well as some others least favorite track. I believe people are currently loving this track because it's a new finished product.
Fourth, I agree. I don't believe it will do well on the radio with listeners who are looking for hooks in choruses. Unless, they enjoy the word yeah. *Usher?*
Last, I agree with Weebs' 60k records.

Really really good song. I love it. That being said, when the song ends does anyone get the feeling that somethings missing. this feeling didnt happen when i listened for the first time to a deja song.

People have to know about the album to be able to buy it ... that's my main hesitation. Thrice has just as die-hard of a fan-base ... Vhessiu tanked sales wise, and TAITA only did like 32k first week if I remember right. When this leaks will directly impact the sales first week - I know it will.

Personally I felt that BN's Deja singles were some of the worst songs on Deja. Granted, their awesome but still.

Well the demo sounded like it was Jesse and a 4-track. Haha.

I'm wondering if that's what a casual listener would think ... hmm .. I dunno, I don't get that impression. I'm gonna randomly send the song to my sister and see what her thoughts are .. she's a good judge on that kinda thing.

Best Laid Plans...Foiled. We're putting "Sowing Season (Yeah)" up in the myspace player right now. A copy somehow ended up in the hands of a radio station and rather than have cutup mp3's floating around, we thought that we would give you the whole enchilada right now. Know that we had a plan to let you hear it first but hey, sometimes the internet is your friend and sometimes it's a pain in the....have a great weekend everyone!

My main gripe with this song, although I think it's great, is that theres a lack of a "live" feeling on it. You know? Like you listen to Hold Fast Hope on Vheissu and everything is just powering over - but that album is not overproduced at all. What I guess I'm trying to say is that the power feels lackluster. It feels like you're waiting to be just hit with a wrecking ball in the face and all that hits you is a piece of paper blowing in the wind.

Worst comparison ever? Probably.

I think I prefer this after a couple of listens than I did most of the tracks on Deja ... but then I absolutely hated Deja when I first heard it and now it's one of my favourite albums. Time will tell, especially when this can be heard with the lyric booklet. The distort section sounds a little busy to me, but the little bit after "not you family" and before it goes back into the chorus reminds me of the muted string "duh-duh" hook in Creep, which is definately a good thing.

It probably is a bad comparison, I'm not one to judge. I'll agree to an extent. I remember this song being so powerful and jaw dropping live. I really think I was one of the few kids to get it, everyone was going so crazy while me and about 20 others just sat in back, most cuddling with the girlfriends. But yeah, the live version of this song, not recorded, but you having to be there really had my hopes up for this album. I still love this song though.

Now the tons of kids i know who lsitened to deja just think brand new dropped off of the face of the earth. I find myself telling kids there cd will come out soon and they dont even believe me.
