hi guys. i really love the look of the fender telecaster and i am seriously thinking about buying one. what is the difference between the tele and the strat and what else should i know before trying it out?

Well first off I prefer teles over strats. A telecaster has a more distict sound because of a treble twang you get from the pups and is good for standing out in a mix. If you're just judging off looks, you might as well go with the tele since its what you want. One difference is the switching with the pickups as the tele has a 3 way switch and a strat has a 5 way switch. Honestly I'd just go to guitar center and play every guitar you like with an amp similar to what you have and just judge off how it plays and what sound you like the most.

you dont need to know anything before 'trying out' a guitar. if it feels right, sounds right, and you can afford it, then thats enough to justify you investing in it.

Personally, telecasters have always been more playable to my liking, they offer a thinner, faster neck, with a very twangy tone. When you compare strats and tele's, you will always hear the 'twang' as the biggest difference.

And there is multiple kinds of teles and strats, each with their own unique sounds and feel, just go out and play them.

I don't think that "twang" is always the best way to describe a Tele.... they can sound really mean/heavy with the right amp.

Not everyone wants a "heavy" sound. Though I think with the right amp, anything could sound mean/heavy but teles are mainly known for their distinct tone. If you're going for a strictly heavy sound, you might as well just get a les paul/sg. At least with those you could get a good sound just by plugging in rather than tweak and tweak your eq to get a sound similar to what humbuckers could do.

No, what I'm saying is that I think that Telecasters sound better than Les Pauls / SGs for loud music.

try out lots of different guitars to see what you like best. dont pigeonhole yourself becaue you think a guitar looks cool. also, lots of guys in bands tend to mod their guitars, so a tone that a dude in the band gets with his tele may be impossible in your stock one.

More ring, more tone, more good.

I'm trying to learn a lot more about guitars...what are some good guitars/amps you guys could reccommend for those who aren't blessed in the money department?

How much money are you trying to spend ?

Well, I'm 17...and trying to get a job...I'm still in high school. I would have to save over a long period of time probably, but I'd be willing to save up however much it took to get a decent guitar.

i had a strat for a while, but i switched over to a gison SG.
idk, i always though Teles were hideous, but if they play half as good as the strat, then it's worth getting.

strats are cooler.

it depends on sound that you are going for

if you want a sloppy pop sound, then by all means a strat is where its at

if you want a treble/twang distortion that makes all other motha fuckas run for cover, then the tele is your weapon of choice

but i'd love a Gibson Firebird IV Studio
