What's the difference?
The alpha and beta releases were aimed primarily at the developer and testing community as there were still some bugs present. Some of the new features that the Mozilla Firefox 2 browser brings are:
New Windows installer using the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nullsoft_Scriptable_Install_System) (NSIS)
New anti-phishing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing) features
There are now several hidden options for how the tabs are displayed, and the close behavior is slightly different
A history of recently closed tabs and the ability to reopen closed tabs
Automatic restoration of the user's browsing session if there is a crash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_%28computing%29)
New default theme with new icons and a new tab bar design.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox#_note-10)
Inline spell checking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spell_checker) in text boxes and the ability to search in these areas.
Search suggestions now appear in the search box auto-complete for Google (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google) and Yahoo! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo%21)
New search service that supports Sherlock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_%28software%29) and OpenSearch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenSearch) engines
Combining the extensions and themes managers into an "Add-ons" manager, updating it to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
New search plugin manager for removing and re-ordering search engines
Improved support for previewing and subscribing to Web feeds (RSS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28file_format%29) and Atom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_%28standard%29))
New microsummary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsummary) feature for bookmarks
Support for Scalable Vector Graphics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics) (SVG) text using svg:textPath
Client-side session and persistent storageSource: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox

Exactly
"Of the two rivals, Firefox remains the better application. Since IE users will have to adjust to a new layout and interface anyway, this might be a good time to give Firefox a try, then watch IE 8 play catch-up again in five years."
I bet it will still suck ass on a Mac.
Firefox rapes IE in every way. Don't use IE.

It's 5:30 EST here, and I just downloaded it.It's been out for probably a year in beta, and RC3 was just released last week.
Today is the public release, so your browser will auto update to 2.0 if it doesn't have it.

they actually released it a day early yesterday afternoon. i have been playing with the Beta versions and like 2.0 so far. I switched from IE to Firefox over a year ago and never looked back. I dont know how i could live without tabbed browsing after this. I also d/l'ed the new version of IE and dont like it as much.

Hooray! I've been waiting for a major update since the new IE came out. I wonder if I can just install it over my old firefox though...
Hell yes. I just download that music player plug-on though. Hopefully it'll still work with it.
FoxyTunes, the music player does still work. There is an update that you can check for when installing it. It now can look up music and stuff (thats what it said, i havent tried it too much yet)

wow internet browser!!! i dont see why everyone has beef with IE, they both look at the internet right? and firefox can't handle as much as IE (at least from when i have tried it). but it does have OMG tabbed browsing!!! so you dont have to go through all that effort of CTRL+N to get a new browser!! i bet 2.0 will let you do EVEN MOREEEE!!@#
i'm sure i'll have FF in a week and be dissing IE since i made this statement

Wow. You definitely don't know shit about the internet. See, there's these people who find holes in your browser, and can really fuck with your shit. Firefox closes a majority of these holes, whereas IE6 was swiss cheese. Yes, they both look at the internet, but one lets you do it much safer. Not to mention is much more customizable. But I'm sure you wouldn't care about those things.
I for one hate the new Internet Explorer. When I'm browsing the internet, I like to have as little of the browser viewable. Everything in Firefox is all in one bar and is nice and organized. IE7 won't let me get rid of those shitty "Favourites" stars and forces me to have an empty bar with just those two sitting on there...It looks like ass, essentially.

From a website developers point of view, Firefox is the better browser.. IE is like fucking George Bush for us. It does stuff its own way and fucks the consequences.

The plugins are the reason I keep using firefox. Well one of the many reasons. My favorite one is I replaced the stop button with a picture of MC Hammer and it says "Stop! Hammer time!" every time you hit it. It's amazing.
This may be old, but this extension is compatible with 2.0 and its awesome imo.

When you do a google search it brings up the most relevant result from wikipedia on the right side of screen and the google results on the left side.

And of course now that I have said that, it's not compatable with firefox 2.0 :-( And neither is the theme that I was using. This isn't cool
been out since yesterday on ftp, but not officially released

This is the worst fucking update ever, I hate it so much. Is there anyway I can get rid of this and redownload firefox 1? This shit is messing up all over the place. For example, it's not letting me middle click something and bring it up in a new tab (or middle click out of tabs), it's not letting me do stuff in the new tabs I open. When I just clicked on entering this thread, it brought it up in a new window, not a new tab. Fuck this shit.

My favorite part is when I mouse over the scroll bar icon, it changes from teal to purple.

The Mac version always had tabs. The mac, win, and linux versions of Firefox are 99.9% identical.
If anybody else loves using Safari, you should check out Camino-- it made me switch from Safari. It's got the same gecko rendering core as firefox, but feels a lot faster and, I feel, acts a lot smoother than firefox. www.caminobrowser.org. Because it's based on the firefox code, any sites that are firefox compatible will work with it.

Seriously, am I the only one that hates thsi version? It doesn't let me close new tabs, or even open anything in them for that matter. Every time I try and put a URL into a new tab, it loads the page in my previous tab and the new one just sits idle.
Someone please give me a link for the last version of IE 1.5.

IE 7 > Firefox 2.0
Wrong.
Unless you're just stating opinion.
I have 2.0 and IE7. Firefox is definitely superior. Firefox needs to do more advertising/outreaching. I believe that that's the only reason it's not the primary browser.

Call a technician up. Whatever brand your computer is, there should be a toll free number that you can call and get free tech support help, explain your problem, then they'll walk you through the fix for it if it's the computer itself. If it isn't, call your internet service provider and do the same exact thing I listed above with them. One of the two should be able to fix the problem.

No kidding. I'm using Mac firefox and while the functionality is essentially the same as Windows, my internet seems to get clogged up, especially on here, myspace, last.fm, and buzznet. It will get stuck and just go nowhere for three or four minutes. it's not an internet problem because Safari works fine in those interludes and doesn't get said clogs...but I can't live without tabs so I stick with Firefox.
If any of you Mac users know what's wrong I'd love to hear it...the firefox forums didn't even try answering my question.

Errr..Then you're probably screwed. I thought you were on a home desktop/laptop that was having problems. It's probably the settings the school put on the laptop to restrict acess to specific things.

I have a question about Firefox, which I've been using for over a year now. My question is about downloading applications. When I was using IE and wanted to download an application, it gave me the option of just running the app. and then installing it, instead of saving it to my computer. Does Firefox allow you to just run/install apps.? Or do you have to save the .exe file on your computer first and then run that? From what I've seen, it doesn't allow you to. So whenever I want to download a new application I always use IE, but for internet browsing (which is about 98% of my internet needs) I used Firefox. I actually used IE to download the new version of Firefox.
I'd appreciate if anyone had any info on this. Thanks!

I just find it easier to run/install an application, but you can't do that with Firefox. Just something I noticed. I'd rather not have to save a file every time I wanna install something. But you're right, it isn't really an issue. I can just use IE. I just thought maybe I was overlooking something in Firefox, but I guess not.
