And then he says something like this.

eh idk, it semes like a bad thing to say, but Fox using his exploiting his disease to gain votes is equally as low. I don't think he is exploiting his disease. I think he's using his celebrity to bring focus to this illness.

so wait, the problem is that he thinks michael j fox is selling his disease to promote a candidate and rush limbaugh called him out for it? have you not heard of politics? he was just calling him out for it thats all.
Broken Parachute
10/25/06, 06:53 PM
That was a stupid thing to say, but Michael J. Fox did look pretty stupid there. I've seen him on camera in other places and he was only shaking subtley and barely noticeable. It's still sad that people can say stupid things like that. And Rush Limbaugh hasn't had much of a reputation for awhile.

I don't think he is exploiting his disease. I think he's using his celebrity to bring focus to this illness.
theres a difference between bringing focus to teh illness and a highly political person not taking his pills and then saying "this is the effects of what happens if stem cell research isn't allowed". he was misleading in a political sense. He made it sound like it is illegal to conduct stem cell research, when it is infact legal and many states, including the state the senator i believe he was endorsing was from have some form of research going on. It's just not funded by the fedeeral govt.

Both guys are losers.
Low Level Owl
10/25/06, 07:36 PM
the senator is from missouri. I believe they are having a vote pretty soon on whether or not to make it legal for stem cell research. I think it is perfectly fine for michael j. fox, who would benefit from stem cell research, to make that commercial. I think people need to lay off of him. It's not like he can truly control how bad he shakes. Medicine may help to a certain extent.
rush limbaugh is an asshole anyways.

This is exactly like the Coulter "controversy," democrat’s use victims for political attacks ads and then bitch and whine when the opposing side responds. Being a victim doesn’t give someone a free ride to say and do anything they want in the name of partisan politics.
Fox flat out lied/mislead voters about Jim Talents opinion on cell research, that alone left him open for criticism from the Republicans, and no unfortunate sickness protects him from that. And no one forced him to make a partisan ad either, he could have just as easily made a nameless nonpartisan commercial in support of the bill. He didn’t, and there fore the public needs to be made aware of the facts surrounding the ad, they need to know that Fox lied/mislead and they have a right to know about his habit of not taking his pills prior to public appearance to drum up extra sympathy the audience (something he states in his own book).
Rush is a dick, as is anyone who rally's behind a party rather then an idea or cause is. But that doesn't change the fact that the public has every right to be informed about the actual truth in and behind a political attack ads.

The majority of you do realise that the medication for Parkinson's is expensive, so there are individuals that do shake like that and Fox was illustrating what the disease looks like for those unfortunate enough to be without the funds to have the pills that limit the effects of the disease.

Not to defend Rush or anything... cus he's a dick.
But MJF has admitted to not taking his medication in order to truly "show" the diesese. Obviously, that was the point Rush was trying to make... but he shouldn't have even tried.

Um... it's the Parkinson's that makes the muscles twitch and tremor like that. It's the most well known/common symptom of the diesease.

in most cases w/ parkinson's disease he would be more tense than anything and pretty stiff
What Are the Most Common Medications Used to Treat Parkinson's?
Sinemet (levodopa/carbidopa)
Levodopa (also called L-dopa) is the most commonly prescribed and most effective medication for controlling the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, particularly bradykinesia and rigidity.
Levodopa is transported to the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. It is then converted into dopamine for the nerve cells to use as a neurotransmitter.
Sinemet is made up of levodopa and another drug called carbidopa. Levodopa enters the brain and is converted to dopamine while carbidopa increases its effectiveness and prevents or lessens many of the side effects of levodopa, such as nausea, vomiting, and occasional heart rhythm disturbances. It is generally recommended that patients take Sinemet on an empty stomach, at least ½ hour before, or 1 hour after meals.
There are two forms of Sinemet, controlled-release or immediate-release Sinemet. Controlled-release (CR) Sinemet and immediate-release Sinemet are equally effective in treating the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, but some people prefer the controlled release version. Ask your doctor which approach is best for you.
While Sinemet is the most effective medication and has the least short-term side effects, it is associated with high risks of long-term side effects, such as involuntary movements (dyskinesia). Used on a long-term basis, levodopa may also cause restlessness, confusion, or abnormal movements. Changes in the amount or timing of the dose will usually prevent these side effects, but most experts now recommend alternatives to Sinemet, such as the dopamine agonists, and use Sinemet only when the alternatives fail to provide sufficient relief.

while yes symptoms of parkinson's is not being able to control muslce movement, the treatment someone is taking can cause the movement problems aswell even possibly worse, notice i never said that people w/ Parkinson's don't shake, I said they shake less off of the meds.

I judge this on my grandad who had parkinsons.
He had medication, he took pills but he never stopped moving. In his latter years it was worse than MJF is on the ad. From a first person perspective of knowing someone with parkinsons I can say he was not exagerating the effects, yes he could have held them back but what he showed us is what parkinsons truely does. Anyone who disagrees with that is flat out wrong.

It is funny that I have been reading this website for a few years now and I never read anything political on here until the mall punk scene became riddled with pseudo-activists and fake-intellectuals. Thats why Im always a dick about this kind of shit Jason, because your opinions are not your own but rather part of a sick trend of trying to be political by spewing out liberal nonsense remarks (i.e. bush is hitler, limbaugh would be better off dead etc...)
That is the problem with liberals in general these days. They have nothing to say, only things to bitch about. The have no plan except to attack the opponents plans, they have no opinions they just disagree with anything a republican said. The fact of the matter is that if Fox was in an ad for a Republican candidate and Al Franken made the same remarks that Limabugh made then you would think it was funny. But now you are trying to look like you are taking the moral high ground by condemning it when all you are doing is putting a spotlight on what is wrong with american politics these days. It is always about attacking, never about issues. You are accountable, I am accountable, Limbaugh is accountable, and so is Fox.

i'm sick of this whole "liberals' opinions aren't their own" bullshit. my opinions on things were formulated by my personal beliefs and views on life not just because a powerful democrat or some funny comedian with a liberal POV said them.
and you talk about liberal talking points being bad; but what about when conservatives use phrases like "cut and run" and "blame america first" when talking about people with opinions different than their own.

Fox was actually suffering symptoms caused by his MEDICATION in this advert. An excess of dopamine causes Tardive Dsykinesia (an excess of motion, inability to control muscle movements), which is what he appears to be afflicted with in this clip.
Rush Limbaugh/Bill O'Reilly/Ann Coulter etc. are doing more harm for their cause than good. You fight the battle of ideas with superior IDEAS, not slander and inflamatory rhetoric.

I don't disagree with that (though I think Bill Mahr is quite amusing).
I know everyone has their own opinion, which is a good thing. But I've gotta jump in here with mine... I am a conservative, and a fan of Rush. (I know...I should burn in hell - thanks.) But I ALSO completely understand why some people hate Rush. Although I think saying that he would be better off dead is MUCH worse than what Rush said about Fox...but that's just my opinion.
I would not have put it the way Rush did. However, I do feel that he was correct in his underlying point. If Fox had made that ad asking for donations to his cause, and Rush said what he said, that would be wrong. BUT Fox's ad was political. It's SOLE purpose was to lead the public to believe that one candidate cares more about Parkinson's disease than the other candidate does. That, right there, puts ANYONE into the political arena. Once you're in that arena, you are fair game. That was Rush's entire point. He feels that it's typical liberal tactics to use "victims" (9/11 widows, Cindy Sheehan, etc.) to try to persuade the public toward their side, because they believe that these "victims" are beyond criticism. He did not accuse him of "faking" his Parkinson's. He felt that he was using his disease to help a political candidate by EMPHASIZING his disease. While that may be OK in drawing public attention to your cause, it is NOT OK for drawing attention to one candidate over another. Go read the transcripts of the show (http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/eibessential3/mjf0.member.html) (aka: get ALL the facts, from ALL sides) before jumping on the bash-Rush bandwagon.

I think it is worth noting that BILL CLINTON signed the Dickey Amendment into law in 1995 which prohibited government funding for stem cell research from human embryos. GEORGE W. BUSH was the first president in history to provide funding stem cell research in 2001 (to the tune of 100 million). In 2005 he vetoed a bill that would enable researchers to use stem cells from disposed human embryos.
Maybe some of you should get your facts straight before you start ranting about how the federal ban on stem cell research is some Republican conspiracy.

I have to agree with the idea that "the whole "you're x years old" argument just makes you look like a complete fucking asshole"
It's repeated so often on all these forums: you're x years old, therefore your view doesn't matter. Since when does age equal intelligence?
Mozart started composing at 5 years old. What if somebody had said, "Shit, you're just a dumb fucking kid. Get off that piano and roll around in the dirt and play with your dog."
Case in point. Age = intelligence, doesn't work. Age does = experience, which can sometimes lead to wisdom, but can also lead to pretension, pride and hubris.
