Interesting article, I didn't know Tower had such an influence. In my area there is a Tower and a Newbury Comics right across from each other, and Newbury Comics has a much better indie selection and better prices so I got the idea Tower didn't do much business, but I guess most stoes don't have to deal with the same kind of competition.

hopefully, this will see a rise in profits for independent record stores. I honestly cant see people giving up on buying music just because its not in Tower records anymore. If someone is looking for an album theyll get it, either online or at a record store.

I think at first though, it will be very bad for indie labels until they figure out exactly how to bridge the gap. The bad thing is that may be just long enough to send a few labels under.

I think it will hurt indie labels one way or another. Tower was pretty indie friendly and hosted in-stores for bands.
People just don't buy a record that they were specifically looking for. There's also a ton of impulse buying that goes on in stores. Best buy and walmart lose money on every cd sale in the hopes that if someone spends enough time in the store they'll buy a high margin item.
I'm disapointed to see the tower brand go. Lets hope that it does help the sales of the small mom and pop shops.

Best Buy slowly seems to acquire smaller labels, so hopefully they can pick up some slack.

No Idea Records was one of the main distro and they will hurt, now. And it isn't just indie labels it is distro and indie labels from wide variety of music. I work at Tower and some labels will never get picked up in Best Buy anyways. And to Jason Tate, I bought The Future Of Music at Tower with my discount I have yet to read it, but I read some and it seems good.

Hopefully. I went to Tower Records and bought tons of indie cds. I'm sad that they're closing, but I'll find other stores to buy from.

i like how their liquidation discounts come off of original retail prices, rather than what they might have been sold for in the store prior to liquidation. cheeky bastards. i'm pumped for when it hits 40% on everything.
so i guess until then, i'm just hiding my stuff in the store..haha.

I agree with you, Tony. The smaller labels might be thrown under the wheels on this one, but hopefully someone comes along to help out a little.

i was thinking about that. im so used to running to tower everyweek and buying my music. i actually had to think about where to go to get music. that definitely says something. such a major chain closing is a bad sign. oh well.......
