What is the best song to learn when you are just starting out on guitar? My girlfriends son is learning guitar and I gave him a few really easy song tabs to learn. But he wants to know more and I have run out of ideas. I have been playing for so long that I am out of touch with what is easy. I also play by ear and I read music not tabs. Thank you for your help.

get him into jazz or blues and maybe he wont become another byproduct of the powerchord grunge era.

the first song i learned was redemption song by bob marley. the intro taught me how to play individual strings and then the chords are rather simple.

Pirates by Rufio is an easy one.

seriously, though i would suggest a few easy blues tunes before dipping into jazz.

She don't use Jelly by The Flaming Lips was pretty easy, first song I ever learned. But you can always go to chordie.com and see if they have anything that you believe would be good for his level of knowledge.

What I did when I started learning was...I'd throw on the radio, or one of my favorite cds and I'd just let it go, and as it played, I'd try to pick up on as many riffs as I could. Make a game out of it, it'll help develop your ear too.
