ESPN is reporting (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2653361) that University of Miami defensive lineman Bryan Pata was shot and killed in Miami this evening after leaving practice. Miami-Dade police are treating his death as a homicide.

ps. on another college fb note, RU > LOUISVILLE ON THURS ;-)I'm looking forward to that game. I have so much respect for Schiano (hell, I'd love to have him back after this season).

But this is pretty sucky. I thought the two injuries announced this week were bad enough. Geez. :bluesad:

This is really a shame. I am a sophomore at UM right now and I as much of anyone thinks our football team is a bunch of thugs because I know first hand. But this is just really terrible. I saw him just this morning, and many other mornings, in the dining hall on campus and its really a shame to think that hes dead now. I am really shocked. All I can hope is that ESPN doesn't turn this story into another anti-Miami tyrade and instead pays respect to one of the University of Miami football players for once in this case, instead of just having all of their experts raddle off high level SAT adjectives about what a disgrace our program and our school is.

I can't believe this Tony. I'm speechless. Almost brings me to tears man.Yeah, definitely. I've been going to games for more than 10 years, and Pata has been such an underrated player on the d-lineman for the past few. I'll be interested to see how the team pulls together after this.

Is it just me, or is it weird we keep losing current or recently graduated players in the past few years? Al Blades, Chris Campbell, and now Pata.

Yea I've been going to games for years too, and I agree, he has been underrated.

I hope that they can pull together and win this weekend for him. If not any other games, just this weekend.

Good assumption seeing as you guys know 0 about the circumstances about the shooting...

Especially seeing as Pata was not a named mentioned within the brawls or incidents before...from what I know, he's actually a very good kid who would never be caught up in something like this.

Ok this year. Two players were shot at, why the fuck is that their fault you idiot? They were shot at, someone was shooting them and they defended themselves in self-defense...yet this is Miami's fault.

The brawl: FIU started with Miami. It was inexcusable, I will admit...but any fucking team would defend their own players if they get attacked by a school that is even more 'Thug' than them.

Of course, with your elaborate explanation there it all makes sense...Pata was asking for it by going to Miami!

There are a few bad players character wise on Miami's team (Merriweather being one of the shot people and one of those character problems), but does that not speak for the entire team, as you have so poorly assumed it does.

In fact, they U has cleaned up it's image prior to these incidents this year...and if you think of where the incidents have been from, it's the same 3-4 players being named.

Good thing you are willing to discredit the loss of a life as "just another bad apple at the U" though...

I'm pretty sure you are just putting words in my mouth. I never said anything about the character of Bryan Pata. I never said he was guilty of anything or put himself in that situation. My original post was a simple "Thug U", which has been the nickname to refer to Miami's football team since Michael Irvin played there. These incidents don't help that rep.

A player's tragic death? John Lennon's shooting should portray The Beatles as thugs then, while you're at it.

You know nothing about the situation, and neither do any of the rest of us. So why try to make it sound like it's automatically the victim's fault? It just makes you look like a petty person who really doesn't give a shit about college football and is just saying things to hear yourself talk.

you obviously dont know a lot about miami on the 80's and how disgraceful their program was then. that miami has been back since butch davis left in the early 2000's as is pointed out weekly by college football pundits. the program is a disgrace. every year there are multiple players arrested and kicked off the team. many players have been arrested with posession of firearms and the like. they recruit good players regardless of character and the school's rep is going to shit as their football program goes. its a shame becaus its a pretty decent academic college

Ryan Moore was suspended for eight games or so following an arrest. Anthony Reddick was kicked off the team for his part in the brawl.

One person was kicked off the team this year, and no one was arrested for possession of firearms.

If an article had said he was shot in the middle of a drug deal or something, that's a different story. But there is no information and people are this close to saying, "He's on the Miami football team, and they're all thugs, so he deserved it."

obviously there arent players arrested for gun posession annualy. the program would be dissolved if this happened. but it has happened numerous times in the past and miami football does have a horrendous reputation for crime and stupidity. this linemans death is tragic, but its not any more tragic than the other few hundred who were gunned down today in this country. and its really not that surprising to be honest.

I thought I was reading Absolutepunk.net not CNN.com.

I mean, thanks for the info, but this isn't even loosely tied to the music community, nor is it even that important on a national level that it should be posted here.

Britney's divorce? : understandable to post on AP.net, she IS a singer/entertainer.
Midterm election stuff? : pretty important, also understandable news item.
Worldseries? : thats a big deal, coverage seems reasonable
Some football dude in Florida got shot? : who gives a fuck, people get shot everyday. If I got shot tomorrow, I wouldn't expect a news post about on ap.net, and I work in the music industry.

Not to disrespect the horrible tragedy that was the shooting, but I completely agree with this poster. I don't even think some of the major sporting event stuff should be posted (unless Jesse Lacey starts playing infield for New York), but this one is really stretching it.

Haha seriously. I still follow him and I was so happy the few times he started for San Fran. I hope he can make it somewhere, though it is likely not going to happen. He'll be a good quarterbacks coach somewhere in college. I guarantee it.

Admittedly, I have to say that I might agree...but in a much less disrespectful way...

maybe you shouldn't have included the phrase "who gives a fuck."

I say that all you folks should just pay your respects to this player and his family and quite bitching and debating whether Miami is "Thug U" and various other stupid names. I feel awful for his friends and family.

To you other little "scene" pricks who are chiming without any prior knowledge of being involved in sports in general, I'm about to burst your bubble.
THERE ARE THUGS IN EVERY ORGANIZATION ACROSS THE USA, FROM 7TH GRADE SPORTS, TO THE PROS.
Ive played sports my whole life, even recieved a full scholorship in basketball. Sports in general, for the most part, has a hadnfull of thugs on every team. Half of the NBA would be in prison of they werent good at putting a ball through a hoop. Same goes for the NFL.

Im sure that his family and friends give a fuck, asshole. Just the simple fact that a decent human being of importance was unjustly removed from this earth by vermon, probably much like yourself, is newsworthy enough for me. Sure, I agree that everytime Pablo Vargas gets shot in the K-mart parking lot, it probably shouldnt be posted here. But, this particular person seems to have made a positive impact on humanity, and I'm proud of him for that.
You need to watch your tongue fucker. I dont care if you are "in the music industry".
Being a stockboy at a label's merchandise warehouse doesnt count as being in the music industry.

When I saw the breaking news on ESPN, I was not surprised one bit. That school is full of the thuggest criminals you can find. Their whole football team shouldn't even be playing right now. Fucking thugs.
