Introduction

Welcome to my best of 2006 list. This is all personal opinion, if you're not going to realize that - don't bother reading. Hopefully you'll check out the artists and songs on my list, I think there's some great stuff here. When it's all said and done, 2006 was a very good year for music.

Top Albums of 2006

30) ActionReaction - 3 is the Magic Number
29) Fair - The Best Worst-Case Scenario
28) Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child
27) Latterman - We are Still Alive
26) Anathallo - Floating World
25) Over It - Step Outside Yourself
24) No Trigger - Canyoneer
23) Kevin Devine - Put Your Ghost to Rest
22) Spitalfield - Better Than Knowing Where You Are
21) New Found Glory - Coming Home
20) Underoath - Define the Great Line
19) Damien Rice - 9

15) Set Your Goals - Mutiny!
14) Brandtson - Hello, Control
13) Thursday - A City by the Light Divided
12) Liam and Me - There's a Difference
11) Rise Against - The Suffer and the Witness
10) Plus 44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating
09) The Living End - State of Emergency
08) The Steal - The Steal
07) Rocky Votolato - Makers
06) The Matches - Decomposer
05) John Mayer - Continuum
04) The Format - Dog Problems

Honorable Mention

Foo Fighters - Skin and Bones
Brand New - Demos
Cobra Starship - When the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets
Between the Trees - The Story and the Song
As Tall as Lions - Self-Titled
Rock Kills Kid - Are You Nervous?
Jump, Little Children - Live at the Dock Street Theatre
+/- - Let's Build A Fire
Rhett Miller - The Believer
M. Ward - Post War
Josh Ritter - The Animal Years
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain

These are albums that I felt needed some recognition but didn't really fit into my top 30 (or in two cases, didn't really count - seeing as they're live albums).

Top EPs of 2006

03) The Apprentice - Good Friends Don't Come Easy
02) Sherwood - The Summer EP
01) The Colour Revolt - Self-Titled

Worst (Most Disappointing) Albums of 2006

04) Matchbook Romance - Voices
03) October Fall - A Season in Hell
02) Yellowcard - Lights and Sounds
01) Cute is What We Aim For - The Same Old Blood Rush with a New Touch

It hurts to put Yellowcard on this list, but sadly, I must. However, that train wreck doesn't even come close to the catastrophe of Cute is What We Aim For.

Best Producer of the Year

01) Mark Hoppus

Runner-Up: Mike Green

Best New Band of 2006

01) The Steal

Runners-Up: Plus 44, Liam and Me, Set Your Goals, Manchester Orchestra

Best Music Video of 2006

01) Thrice - Red-Sky

Runners-Up: Plus 44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating, Justin Timberlake - Sexyback

Best Lyrics of 2006

05) Morrissey
04) John Mayer
03) Nate Reuss (The Format)
02) Joshua Radin
01) Jesse Lacey (Brand New)

Even with a few missteps on their new album, Jesse Lacey continues to impress with his command of the lyric and usage of verse.

Joshua Radin mastered the art of "simple yet poignant" lyrics this year. No other album hit me with the same emotional hammer, and this is due to the clever crafting of "regular" language into beautiful melody and song.

Nate's just one hell of a clever dude. The lyrics on "Dog Problems" still leave a smile on my face.

John Mayer may have one of the best ears and minds for "pop" music today. The way he crafts his songs is exceptional. I'm in awe.

It's Morrissey. Enough said.

Runners-Up: Geoff Rickley (Thursday), Manchester Orchestra, Shawn Harris (The Matches)

Best Vocals of 2006

05) John Mayer
04) Cove Reber (Saosin)
03) Nate Ruess (The Format)
02) Jason Gleason (Action Reaction)
01) Morrissey

No one comes close to Morrissey.

Runner-Ups: Josh Groban

Biggest Sellouts

02) October Fall
01) Cute is What We Aim For

Best Live Show

04) Say Anything
03) Brand New
02) Thrice
01) Morrissey

Hardest Working Band of 2006

01) Sherwood

Best Record Label

02) Vagrant Records
01) Nettwerk

Most Overrated Band

01) Angels & Airwaves

Most Underrated Bands

06) Joshua Radin
05) Thursday
04) Set Your Goals
03) No Trigger
02) Spitalfield
01) Brandtson

People got pissed Brandtson released a different style of CD (it's not even as different as people make it out to be) and therefore missed one of the better albums released this year. They continue to be incredibly underrated.

I honestly have no idea why more people aren't into Spitalfield.

Thursday was given the shaft by some of the scene kids this year. Big mistake. Their new album may end up being their best of their career. Yeah, I went there.

Joshua Radin hasn't hit the mainstream yet and goes unnoticed even by some in the "underground" scene. I don't think this will last nor do I think it's fair. He became one of my favorite singer/songwriters this year and I think more people need to jump on this bandwagon.

Best (Catchiest Song) Single

03) Rise Against - Ready the Fall
02) Rock Kills Kid - Paralyzed
01) Plus 44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating

While they may not be the best songs of the year, or even the best tracks on their respective albums. These are the three songs that I could not help but find myself singing in my head over and over again.

Best B-Side

01) Brand New - Demo 2

Don't know if this really counts but I don't care. My list, my website, my rules.

Worst Single

01) Cute is What We Aim For - Curse of Curves

Best 'Other' Zine Website

02) Pastepunk.com
01) Rockinsider.com

Band of the Year

02) Brand New
01) The Matches

The Matches put together an album with 9 different producers, and made it captivating, invigorating, and catchy. Their control of style, wit, fun, and song, bring them to the top of my list.

Brand New overcame - everything - to release one of the best albums of the year. I'd say they've successfully continued their trend of complete dominance. Yes, Jesse, you're still the king.

01) What is the What - Dave Eggers

I'm including books I read for the first time in 2006 as well. If you're not reading everything Eggers puts out, I highly recommend you start. And Get Fuzzy is the best comic strip out there right now, gotta show some love.

You have no idea what I have in store for 2007. We're not even close to finished. With your help, we can change the music industry's landscape. I hope you are all willing to go along for the ride. Thank you to everyone that continues to visit AP.net and make it what it is. My dreams come true everyday, and it's all because of you.

I just wanted to use this time to thank everyone that's taken the time to tell one friend about AP.net. Word of mouth has turned my little hobby into something bigger than my wildest dreams ever imagined.

Thank you - everyone. Now let's not stop now, let's make 2007 even bigger. Tell all your friends.

Now, I guess -- bring on the shit talking. I can't wait to learn how my list isn't "enough" of whatever you think it should be, or not in the right order.

Tate how can u hates on voices so much. I thought it was fantastic and took a band as generic as MR to new hieghts. I mean look at goody like my two shoes or monsters. Classics

And thursday did put out a good album but I have not been able to get into it. I mean I just can't listen to it from start to finish and I only listened to it maybe 8 times since I bought it.

The matches are from my hometown and it was amazing to see decomposuer develop into what it is. They had some others they should have put on like "fierce to love" instead of old ones like "shoot me shoot me..." but decomposuer, and saosin self titled was best for me.

And yes
Good god
Cute. Its so funny to see shaant now compared to when he had pimples all over his face and blonde spikey hair like the old kenny from starting line drive thru years.

Btw anyone else excited for new tsl? Based on a true story was amazing for me..

Similarities with my thoughts / Top 25 Albums list...

We both had Brand New at #3.

We both had Underoath and Thursday in the Top 20.

We both think Brand New's 2nd demo is the b-side of the year.

We both loved "The Last Kiss", which is refreshing considering its box office sales and the widespread negative criticism it seemed to receive (which may have went hand in hand).

Some standout differences with my thoughts...

Brandtson was one of my most disappointing releases. "Who Are You Now?" was one of my favorite albums of the year it came out (2004?) and one of my most listened to discs since its release. I don't think I could even stand to listen to "Hello, Control" more than a couple times.

I enjoyed Matchbook Romance's "Voices." It was definitely a different direction, but I think the (I hate using this word) mature sound in comparison to earlier music works.

I didn't enjoy Plus 44. As a fan of Blink 182 (my favorite band for years), Boxcar Racer, and Angels and Airwaves, I felt like "When Your Heart Stops Beating" was bland. Mark's vocals have never sounded more whiney and the entire release made me realize how much I wish Tom would've been right next to him in recording vocals and guitar. It's a shame we may never have that again.

My best band-related DVD would be Death Cab for Cutie's "Directions." I only bring this one up because I'm wondering if you saw it and what you thought of it.

---------

Overall, I enjoyed reading your list and I definitely see where you're coming from on a lot of your choices (despite disagreeing with a few here and there). One last question, is the Brand New 2007 release you refer to the one dealing with rerecorded demos? Subquestion, has any light been shed on that or is a timeframe set for when it would be released? I'm dying to know more.

Sweet, I loved the Last Kiss, screw the haters.

And I understand why "old" fans don't like the new album. I just happen to be one of the few that buck that trend, and I still think they're incredibly underrated.

I enjoyed Matchbook Romance's "Voices." It was definitely a different direction, but I think the (I hate using this word) mature sound in comparison to earlier music works.

And I hated it. They went for a "mature" sound -- yet aren't the kind of band that can pull it off -- it ended up just annoying me.

Fair enough, but I didn't find the vocals to be whiny at all. I was just impressed at how good of a songwriter Mark is and how I'm glad at least one of the post blink182 bands is good.

My best band-related DVD would be Death Cab for Cutie's "Directions." I only bring this one up because I'm wondering if you saw it and what you thought of it.

It was good, Skin and Bones was better.

Brand New's Demo 2 is easily one of the best things I have heard this year.

Other than that I agree that Brandston is extremely underrated. I saw them play to a crowd of 12 a couple months back and they still gave it their all.

I can't tell you how many people I have gotten addicted to this site, especially my co-workers in college radio. You run a tight ship and in the 2+ years I have been coming here, things just keep getting better. Seeing all the people around here keeps me wanting a career in the music industry.

How were there 30 albums you liked more than Sound The Alarm? Not even an honourable mention. It wasn't the best of the year, but I figured it was good for top 20. I remember reading that you really enjoyed the album.

Honorable Mention
Cobra Starship - When the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets

no

judge them musically, no way, not just because he was in midtown.

Big in 2007

Good list for 2007, but I would put Cartel number 1. They will be the next All-American Rejects.

Brand New is close to being the next big thing all the mags push them to be.

Question for Mr. Tate.

Why the big flip flop for brand new's favortie song? You were pushing Millstone so hard, calling that the best song on the album, while you put Jesus #2 on your favorites list.

im ashamed and appalled at the lack of recognition that pistolita has, or in this case, has not received. tsk tsk, one of the greats of the year.

jason, you run a fantastic site. its a forum where music can be discussed, voices can be heard, people can bitch, people can praise, and I can continue to come back to time and again to receive helpful information.

Good work on your best of list. I hope the people see it for what it is: One mans opinion on the quality-or lack thereof- of music out there. One mans trash is another mans treasure people...

Why do you hate October Fall so much? they barely toured this year and you still have them biggest sell outs. There definitely are bigger sell outs out there.

03) The Apprentice - Good Friends Don't Come Easy

Thank you so much for putting them on here, Eric is an awesome guy and they are an awesome band. I really hope they get the recognition they deserve.

The Next Big Thing(s) of 2007
09) Scenes from a Movie

I'll be surprised if Scenes doesn't become really popular after their cd release, it's catchy as hell, well what i've heard. Too bad it's not out until March. They're good guy, they deserve it.

I saw joshua radin at the bowery ballroom. He's the nicest guy! He was exhausted from press and constant touring, and he did all of his set in the middle of the show to go back to the hotel to actually catch a few winks, but he wouldn't leave until he met everyone who wanted to meet him. I'm glad someone else has caught on to how amazing his music is :)

Dear Jason,
No Best Unsigned Bands of 2006 list?

I was pretty sad that MFH didn't make the next big thing list.

Good lists though. I about agree completely.
Brandtson does deserve more. What about Copeland?

I didn't say they were bad - just overrated. Common sense says there's no way the band can live up to the rating Tom Delonge gave them himself.

I didn't bother reading but i'm sure i saw the colour revolt ep at their shows in june and july, at least july. even then, still 2006 but that would mean the original release date of august might be off, or they had it at the shows before it was released.

Nobody on AP.net seemed to make a decent list for the top EP's of 2006. Everyone seems to be picking Sherwood's Summer EP as the top EP but I want to throw out some other worthy candidates that weren't mentioned by anyone and ask why??

1. Brightwood - The Love Antidote

------- Amazing EP. If you havent heard this EP, it is definately time to go and listen.

2. Scenic Attraction - Short Lie For A Long Cry

------- I believe I got the title of that EP corrrect. I am not completely sure to be honest and I am writing this reply from work to pass time but yea. This EP was extremely catchy and fun and they did this by themselves, being that they were not signed at the time. Songs like "I have problems with tangents" and "Bandaid For A Bullet Wound" were just awesome and were the soundtrack to my summer.

3. All Time Low - Put Up Or Shut Up

------- To be honest I myself didn't even listen to this EP much but I was definately surprised that it did not get any honorable mentions or anything.

4. Waking Ashland - Telescopes

-------- Awesome Awesome stuff. What else do I have to say?

There is one more but I cannot think of their name somehow for the life of me. The band name starts with an "S" and they have piano in the tracks aswell and one of the songs on the EP is entitled "Drive" ehh oh well...When I stop home on my lunch break I will figure it out and edit this post to include them.

Ahh Okay, I missed that. The one I couldn't think of by the way that was my #5 EP of 2006 was:

5. Standard Of Living - Patience

------A mix of piano or keys flows in with the music nicely similar to the style of Waking Ashland.

i definitely agree with yellowcard's lights and sounds being a big disappointment. i loved ocean avenue and there were a couple songs i liked on lights and sounds but overall i felt it was a waste of money.

i know they just put a new album out and i havent heard any of it yet but i'm curious to because i heard they brought the violin back from ocean avenue which i had liked. i know on lights and sounds they used an electric violin which kind of defeats the purposed of even having a violin.
