This list was compiled by going through all of the top 30 albums in the staff lists and using a point system to assign a ranking to each album. We then added up the points to come up with the collective staff consensus you see below. Check out all of the staff member's individual reviews and discover some new music to check out.

---

1. The Format - Dog Problems (580pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/3/1/8/9/7/2format.jpg
Originally Released July 11th on The Vanity Label (Nettwerk Records)
The Format dominated our best of lists this year, and rightfully so. Read Jason (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=137985)'s and Steve (http://http//www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=139034)'s review of Dog Problems if you need any more convincing why this is the best album of 2006.

2. Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me (500pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/5/6/0/6/0/bnsite-cover.jpg
Originally Released November 21st On Interscope Records
They returned, they conquered. Even with mixed reviews, Brand New's The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me was a favorite from the majority of our staff.

3. mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister (335pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/4/1/7/3/1/mwybs.jpg
Originally Released September 26th On Tooth And Nail Records
More accessible than previous releases yet just as poetic, Brother, Sister finds mewithoutYou as strong as ever, and coming in third in our year end rankings. Read Gabe's review (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=174312) to find out why so many staff members loved this album.

4. Saves The Day - Sound the Alarm (320pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/1/0/8/3/22sta.jpg
Originally Released April 11th On Vagrant Records
After an extensive schedule of touring, Saves The Day comes back with a vengeance. This hardnosed 'Back To The Old Days' sound of this album is really something to check out. Besides, who can resist Conley's pink hair? Read Jason (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=120549)'s and Gabe (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=123337)'s reviews of Saves the Day's Sound the Alarm.

5. Plus-44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating (280pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/2/1/1/0/1/442.jpg
Originally Released November 14th On Interscope Records
While they might not be Blink182, Plus 44 were still able to reinvigorate many old fans. Staff members were not let down. Read Drew's review of When Your Heart Stops Beating here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=187755).

6. Rocky Votolato - Makers (255pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/6/4/1/3/4/rocky_votolato.jpg
Originally Released January 24th On Barsuk Records
Like the whiskey that serves as its namesake, this folky-americana record was subtly endearing. Ranking surprisingly high on our list, Rocky V.'s combination of age and grace was irresistable. Read Garett's review of Makers here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=112455).

7. John Mayer - Continuum (202pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/3/1/8/9/7/mayer.jpg
Originally Released September 12th On Sony Music Entertainment
John Mayer returned to the forefront of music with the heavily blues-influenced Continuum. Silky and seductive, the album just might be Mayer's best yet. AP's staff agrees. Read Tony's review of Continuum here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=174867).

8. Moneen - The Red Tree (190pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/1/0/8/3/moneen.jpg
Originally Released April 11th On Vagrant Records
Full of raw, emotional rock tunes, The Red Tree is an album that inspires and awes. Read Jason (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=120555)'s and Drew (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=128504)'s review of The Red Tree.

9. Copeland - Eat Sleep Repeat (205pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/3/1/8/9/7/copeland.jpg
Originally Released October 31st On The Militia Group
Embracing a revitalized sound, Copeland took Eat, Sleep Repeat way underground, back to the band's roots. In fact, the album stunned enough of our staff members to warrant the #9 spot on our list. Read Tony's review of Eat Sleep Repeat here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=180672).

10. As Tall As Lions - Self-Titled (195pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/3/3/6/2/0/b000gfrdy0_01__ss500_sclzzzzzzz_v64 223777_.jpg
Originally Released August 8th On Triple Crown (East West) Records
Fronted by the enormous vocal talent of Dan Nigro, As Tall As Lions became adults and made a deep, dark record with trance-like side effects. Ambiently haunting, the self-titled sophomore effort shows that ATAL are not one hit wonders. Read Garett's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=170440).

11. Damien Rice - 9 (190pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/8121/8121187.jpg
Originally Released November 14th On Warner Bros. Records
On 9, Rice teeters between being heartbroken and pissed off throughout. An excellent follow-up to his stunning debut album, O.

12. New Found Glory - Coming Home (185pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/1/0/8/3/nfg.jpg
Originally Released September 19th On Geffen Records
Coming Home features a slick sound from Florida pop-punkers New Found Glory. They aren't shy about pulling out the ballads, nor are they shy about racking up the points in our list. Read Jason's review of Coming Home here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=170730).

13. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade (180pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/1/3/3/3/0/mcr.jpg
Originally Released October 24th On Reprise Records
Cancer, death, loneliness, and teenagers. Those are just a few of the topics covered on My Chemical Romance's third album. Debuting at number 2 on the charts, the sound is bigger and theatrics are more grandiose. Channeling Pink Floyd, Queen, and Bowie throughout the album, MCR are ready to take over the throne as the new kings of rock and roll. Read Jared's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=181715).

13. The Matches - Decomposer (120pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/1/0/8/3/matches.jpg
Originally Released September 12th On Epitaph Records
The Matches are anything but ordinary. Incorporating nine different producers on their sophomore album, this California quartet released one of the most diverse albums of 2006. Read Jason's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=171239).

15. Band Of Horses - Everything All The Time (170pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/7703/7703666.jpg
Originally Released March 21st On Sub Pop Records
Stadium-sized emo/indie/pop isn't as easy to construct as Band Of Horses would have you believe. Yet, they soar with natural fluency though this dreamy amalgamy of reverb heavy vocals and shimmering, delicate orchestration.

16. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife (165pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/8001/8001798.jpg
Originally Released October 3rd On Capitol Records
Whether or not Stephen Colbert bests The Decemberists in the guitar challenge, Colin Meloy remains king of storytelling in the indie-rock world. Proving that major labels cannot kill off their quixotic, archetypal gift of gab, or their penchant for moody pop/folk tunes, The Decemberists did what they do best and made an enchanting compact disc.

17. Early November - The Mother, The Mechanic, And The Path (160pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/2/1/1/0/1/e11.jpg
Originally Released July 11th On Drive-Thru Records
Sophomore slump be damned. Ace Enders and Co. wrote a three album masterpiece that captivated many. Read Drew's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=145502).

17. Cursive - Happy Hollow (160pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/6/4/1/3/4/happy.jpg
Originally Released August 22nd On Saddle Creek Records
Who needs cello? Cursive make it seem like art isn't hard as they weave a socio-religious commentary into a conceptual album full of the loud, techinical bliss that is second nature for Tim Kasher and crew. Read Greg's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=165477).

19. The Lawrence Arms - Oh Calcutta! (155pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/6/4/1/3/4/lawrence_arms,_the.jpg
Originally Released March 7th On Fat Wreck Chords
After showing some pop-punk prowess on The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Larry Arms turn their amps up to eleven with a more aggressive punk sound for Oh! Calcutta!, and succeed in doing so. Read Darren and Drew's dialogue review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=119618).

20. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America (150pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/8001/8001896.jpg
Originally Released October 3rd On Vagrant Records
It might be impossible to list any other band that can narrate stories of inebriation and infatuation over barroom rock as fine as The Hold Steady did on Boys and Girls In America. Read a user review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=193571).

20. Sleeping At Last - Keep No Score (150pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/5/0/1/1/0/keepnoscorecd.jpg
Originally Released June 21st Independently
Someone bottled heaven and sold it to Sleeping At Last, and they poured this ethereal beauty all over Keep No Score. Garett's record of the year, Sleeping At Last will bestir the heart and lift your spirits to the sky. 20. Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury (150pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/5986/5986052.jpg
Originally Released November 28th On Startrak Entertainment
Easily one of the best hip-hop albums of the new millennium, the Brothers Thornton much anticipated and much delayed sophomore effort is full of dark beats and even darker lyrics. Read Drew's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=197557).

20. Saosin - Saosin (130pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/5/0/1/1/0/2saosin.jpg
Originally Released September 26th On Capitol Records
This band ended up not being the modern day Guns N Roses, and finally got the full-length out Greenless. Cove is the new star in this show, and he sure does show off his pipes. Read Steve's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=166717).

24. Thursday - A City by the Light Divided (140pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/2/1/1/0/1/thursday.jpg
Originally Released May 2nd On Island Records
Thursday's latest effort might have taken a while to get into, but there is no denying that this is the most personal album of their career. Read Drew's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=131096).

24. Gatsbys American Dream - Self-titled (140pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/7913/7913109.jpg
Originally Released August 8th on Fearless Records
Hell hath no fury like Gatsbys American Dream towards the commercial degradation of music. In an outpour of pent up frustration, the boys rocked raw and red, redefining their indefinable sound with keyboards and tongue-in-cheek lyrical mischief. Read Scott's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=159655).

24. Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope (140pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/7837/7837638.jpg
Originally Released June 13th on Sire Records
Though she upped her dosage of accessibility, Regina Spektor traded no weight in songwriting prowess. A classically trained pianist and always playful singer, Spektor crafted a gem that frollicks into your ears and skips around your heart

27. Murder By Death - In Bocca Al Lupo (130pts)

http://www.absolutepunk.net/geek/gars/images/3/1/8/9/7/mbd.jpg
Originally Released May 23rd On Tent Show (East West) Records
This somber record used a cello as its base to drive an Inferno-inspired concept album that led its listeners through dead men and sinners, in and out of hell. Read Darren's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=138389).

28. Forgive Durden - Wonderland (120pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/7775/7775017.jpg
Originally Released May 9th On Fueled By Ramen Records
Though the concert of concept albums died down after '05, Forgive Durden proved that with poetic lyrical talents, wild imaginations, a ring-true message, and catchy, techinical rock, a record with a story can still knock you on your ass. Off kilter riffs and a vast array of genre sounds made this a musical adventure not soon forgotten. Read Scott's review here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=133307&highlight=forgive+durden).

28. Kevin Devine - Put Your Ghost to Rest (120pts)

http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/8037/8037279.jpg
Originally Released October 17th On Capitol Records
Kevin Devine shows he hasn't missed a step with his major label full-length debut. Continuing to teeter between political satire, blunt self-exposure, and stream of consciousness, KD keeps his membership in the singer/songwriter elite.

30. Portugal. The Man- Waiter: "You Vultures!" (115pts)

I dont understand why some of the bands were on there, particularly the early november. I absolutely loved their first album, but I thought this was one was basically three cd's of someone whining about their parents. None of the songs are all that clever or ridiculously creative. anyways, I guess the rest of this is ok. It is exactly what you'd expect on this site.

Even though this is a complilation of like 20 different opinions, people will still complain. Hah. All of the albums being mentioned made it on at least one staff member's top 30, but these are the top 30 combined, so we're not going to see a lot of super indie stuff when we've got a good chunk of staffers that prefer punk rock to that kind of stuff.

Suprisingly not bad of a list. The Format wasn't a bad album but it probably wouldn't crack my top 50. I am in the middle of relistening to stuff...so it does have an outside chance. Mewithoutyou is my number three of the year, so that was funny.

Good mention of: Brand New, The Matches, The Decemberists, The Hold Steady(my number 1), Clipse, Saosin, Spektor, Band of Horses.

Some I just flat out disagree with: +44, John Mayer(I might find it to be his worst effort), Damien Rice(likewise)...etc.

Either way, an interesting read and it's nice to see that most of the staff has moved beyond shallow teeny punk nonsense.

Like Greg, I made my list before hearing TV on the Radio. I don't listen to rap, so GFK had no chance on my list.

The thing with these lists is the albums that make it are just the ones that are more universally liked than others. I'm not sure anyone had Brand New as their number 1 album, but on a number of staff member's lists, it placed fairly well. However, there are albums that will place high in a couple of lists yet not make it, because there simply weren't enough other staff who liked it/listened to it.

New Mars Volta was horrible. Tool's 10,000 days was incredibely lame. The others just didn't see enough votes from each of the staff to get the list.

Well...I'll agree with "Amputechture" being awful, and "10,000 Days" being rather dull, but I still think those two should score higher than most of the stuff on that list.
