Listen to the Barenaked Ladies talk about releasing their new album without major-label backing (and making lots of money in the process) in a video via the replies.

Wait, so their new records let you remix the tracks yourself?

Haha, I read in a Wired article that Beck was planning to do something like that. Looks like BNL beat him to the punch.

Before the record was released they offered a free download of a couple of songs in four track format, or like sixteen tracks for two bucks. The fans could then remix them as they wanted. The favourites of the band are going to be put on a special EP I think. It was so successful that they're planning on doing it for a couple of their old songs as well I think.

i think any marginal success they are going to have now isn't going to be from their music as much as it is their little "political" stand within the music industry that's getting all this hype.

their music has never really been that great anyway.

i'd like to see what kind of numbers they are running down to their bottom line.

I didn't hear them say anything about making lots of money in the process.

I'm not a fan of them in any sense, but the fact that they've really gone and basically bitchslapped the majors by doing this is tremendous, and I hope people realize that bands like Barenaked Ladies and The Format have really opened the eyes of the current dismantling majors and made them see you don't need the support of a huge corporate name to help your record sell.

These guys and their management (Netwerk Management; also manage Brand New, The Format, Anathallo, etc.) are absolutely brillant. This is something I am very excited for in the music industry and is so far ahead of it's time.
