Go to wholenote.com (or .org?). They have a lot of beginner lessons and tips for new guitarists. They're tabs suck major ass though. Stick to their lessons page.

depends what kind of music you are going to play but i suggest just learnign basic power chords...the two string one....such as where you place on finger the 3rd fret of the E string (top string) and another finger on the 5th fret of the A string (one below the top string) you should learn those and get used to them becuase most punk songs use those...... I would start with that if i were you........ just a suggestion

heres the one tip you'll need:

dont take lessons! learn to play on your own. teach yourself. the end result is better that way. learning on your own has endless possibilities.

The best advice I got was to not expect to be able to play barre chords immediately. I was ready to give up because I was so frustrated with them. Then someone told me they couldn't play them for 6 months and I realized I wasn't completely incompetent.

how about ... get some proper lessons and be more than a "punk" guitarist.

Totally agree...one of my friends is a phenomenal guitarists and he swears by getting lessons, but he also plays for like 2 hours a day by himself, so whatever, if you plan on working hard, i would advise get lessons, at least that way your getting a little variety and you can develop some sense of style...whatever....i'm tired

I agree ....

I think by listening to punk bands .. it gives people the illusion that punk musicians are good musicians ... when really they arn't. So don't be another one of them.

this is shocking...for once i agree with you on something.

but you can't just say that, some punk musicians are excellent.
