Good on all the troops who served. The few who committed crimes over there ruined it for the many who served with dignity and pride. It's a shame they'll be deployed to Afghanistan, where there is even less point in a war.

b.) 18 year olds in high school are totally within legal boundries, you just have to make peace with whatever God you ascribe to about it.

You make it seem like the grunts of the military have an active hand in foreign policy. All they are trying to do is support their families. The war isn't their fault. So why would I blame them?
TheProsAndCons

As far as the military goes they may not really be fighting for my freedom but they're putting their asses on the line and dying because they think they are. You have to respect that.
Leave 50'000 combat troops in , rename them "combat support troops" then say all combat troops are out. Give me a break.
saysmydoctor
08/31/10, 09:54 PM
Have you heard of the fact that the war started before the recession?
Afghanistan was started in the midst of a recession that followed 9/11, actually. Iraq, a year and a half later. Finding jobs is not that easy. Meanwhile, the military provides job security and amazing benefits for family.
Trust me, I know, my father is a Marine. I get free health insurance till I'm 26, for instance, and as of recently can utilize my father's GI benefits.
I support the troops in that I regret that they were sent into unnecessary conflicts and in most cases joined an institution because they really have no other choice. And that's something military recruiters rely on heavily. The lowest common denominator makes up our volunteer army.
Instead of blaming them, blame the policymakers and the generals.

anyone saying 'why thank the troops' is taking it a bit far in my opinion. just imagine if those who served in iraq had bulked at the idea and never signed up, or left the military. bush would have absolutely pushed for and had the draft reinstated and you would have been over there. you should at the very least be thankful for that.

 I guess I should just make these last few years count.
Oh look, you're the type of person who thinks that's an insult. How very surprising.
Oh look, the 17 year old knows everything and therefore must be absolutely right. How very ridiculous.
this thread got derailed.
personally, i don't think we ever should have gone to iraq, and now that we're "leaving", the country still has no functioning government and i genuinely wonder what is going to happen to them after we really are gone. unfortunately, i think they are many years away from being stable. it's depressing.

gotta end a war to start another. three public wars going at once would be too much.

I'm curious... what do you mean? Economically? Defense-wise? Socially? I know you also posted in the "Army is Strong" thread, but I'm just wondering your thought process.

Has anyone seen "lord of war", where they just pull a few things off a helicopter and say it's no longer a combat helicopter? That's what this is to me. Renaming troops and moving them around. Some way to keep a promise.

i think the defense budget really can be shrunken considerably without taking away any of the effectiveness of our military. i understand why we have troops in places like korea and japan, but why are there so many in germany still? the cold war is over.

Because it's a huge staging ground for units going into the AOR.

sure, and i understand that. what i don't understand is why there are so many troops still there. according to http://www.realtruth.org/news/070808-001-Less-US-Troops-Abroad.html, we still have ~40,000 troops there. that just seems like a lot, if it's just a staging ground for troops going somewhere else. the reduction of just a few thousand troops could save millions of dollars.
not to derail the thread, but according to the department of defense, the united states has a military presence in 135 of the 192 independent countries of the world. that's an insane amount. certainly some, if not many, are warranted, but 135?

I wonder if people realize that they are going to keep troops in Kuwait, so that if it is necessary, they can bomb from the outside and then return to their bases.

We still have troops in Germany. Hmm... World War II ended when?
And that's why we're a fuckin mess.

How is it hyberbolic? We spend all of our time and money fighting wars. We're a mess, and anyone who says otherwise is blind.

Pulling out of countries that we are not currently 'at war' with wouldn't change jackshit in the big picture. You do realize we're not fighting Germany right now, correct? We just have bases there.
Would it free up troops and money? Sure. Is it the reason, or even a big part of why 'we're a fuckin mess'? Not at all.

What a joke. It's not nearly over in Iraq yet.
Not suprising.
if the tea party attacked obama on the war and being wall street's bitch boy and not this muslim socialist nonsense they'd do alot better.
That'd be difficult since since the bulk of them are the same people who supported this war and throw shitfits whenever there's talk about a governmental solution to curbing corporate power.

yeah, where was the tea party when bush was in power? a lot of their stupid fucking complaints could be attributed to him as well.
