i was just going to post this ...what an awful story. he was filming a segment about tomorrow's game and he just collapsed.

he's a legend who will be missed. i wonder how this will affect the Michigan players?

kind of sad/pathetic that they are exploiting his death to promote this game. they arent paying their respects to him ..they are just trying to get people more emotionally involved in this game.

if it happened any other week, it'd be mentioned briefly around the midpoint of SportsCenter.

as much as I hate to say this, I think it'll make them play a lot harder. Hopefully they can pull it out.

Exactly...and ESPN's coverage of this has already gone over the top.

They cut away from whatever they were covering to show the buses leaving Michigan's property....I mean, come on, is it really that important for us to know that Michigan left at 2pm for the game the next day? Is Lee Corso going to come in at the end of the game tomorrow and tell me that had they left a 1pm, they would have won?

this sucks.

even as a lifelong buckeye fan, i always liked bo.

it sucks that it happened now and that the media can take it and run with it to help hype the game. but i think what bums me out more is that it happened now and he won't get to watch the game. i feel for his family and loved ones, but as involved that he remained in the program, and as much as he loved the school, it's really sad that he's going to miss out on the biggest game the team has played in years. it's pretty obvious he was looking forward to it. sad that he won't be around to watch it.

rip, what a sad story. really too bad he didn't get to witness the game, it won't be the same.

by the way, the spread dropped from around 7 at most vegas betting places to 3 within hours of his death.

i dont think the spread had any business being 7 to begin with. 3 or 3 1/2 sounds right.

Playing in Columbus, OH tonight at a pep rally. Talk about awkward. Real nice message the band put up however.

(Hopefully the link works, it's been up and down all day due to high traffic)

This is horrendously sad. Even as a kid who despises the University of Michigan, Bo Schembechler is, and will always be (to me at least) the face of Football in Michigan. Not the face of Wolverine football, but the face of football in the entire state. Over Barry Sanders, over Billy Sims, over everyone.

Perhaps surpassed by only Al Kaline and Steve Yzerman, Schembechler is easily the most iconic figure in modern sports in this state.

This is a horribly sad day.

RIP, Bo.

I've heard nothing about the guy himself today.

All I've heard about is how this is gonna affect the game.

I watched espn for over an hour earlier and all they talked about was the rivalry and how his death is gonna affect the game.

I've seen at least 4 hours of coverage (no exaggeration) about his life and everything else. i've seen maybe 1 hour of coverage on how this will affect the game. I totally disagree with all of you and I think ESPN has done a very good job bringing people in to attest to his character and honor his life. They even had Jalen Rose and Chris Webber talk about the guy, and they didn't even play football at Michigan.

And also, how can you NOT talk about if this will affect the game or not? This might be the biggest regular season game in college football history, and when a legendary coach dies on one of the teams, horrible as it may seem, it's an important thing to think about when analyzing the matchup.

my problem with the coverage goes 2 ways:

1) it wouldn't have been more then a quick mention on sportscenter if it wasnt this week.
2) they are doing this huge tribute because they've beaten the actual game to death. this allows them to pimp Michigan/OSU by adding a whole new element to the game. they are exploiting his death, even if they are paying tribute in the process.

I disagree. I think ESPN would've made a bigger deal about his passing than you think. This is the man who single handedly beat what is possibly the most storied collegiate programs in college football. It'd be more than a "oh, bo schembechler died. moving on. . . " type of thing.

okay, so they run a quick 2 minute retrospective then ..tops.

look, i have no problem with this guy being paid tribute to. he deserves every minute of it. it's just hard not to take it with a grain of salt when you consider that this is only as big of a story as it is because the ESPN family has OSU/Michigan tomorrow. I think it's sad that they are exploiting his death like this.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see it as that. yes, the timing does factor in but it should. Anytime a legend like Bo passes so close to the rivalry that is often called the best rivalry in sports, save for NYY/Red Sox, it's going to be that way. Same thing would happen if another coach who was involved in one of the bigger sports rivalries passed the eve before the game.

I don't see it as another tool to hype the game; I see it as more of a remembrance of the architect of one of the 3 most storied college football programs.

Maybe it's just perception.

it's totally perception. no way do they just pass it off like nothing otherwise.

i'm on board with those who think espn's doing fine. there is a lot on his life. like scott said, the amount of time paying tribute probably outnumbers the time hyping the game 4:1.

it's all timing. if he died three weeks from now, i think espn would still spend a lot of time paying tribute. he's a figure. when joe pa or bowden pass on, they'll get plenty of coverage. espn does it a lot.

on the flip side though, it's impossible to talk about bo without talking about osu/mich. he's one of the main reasons this rivalry grew to the point of being considered by many to be the best in sports.

i really don't get the feel that they're exploiting his death though. just paying tribute.

So I just got back from the student candle light vigil/memorial service here at U of M and it was truly amazing. There were probably close to 1000 students there in the center of campus with some friends and former players making brief speeches about Bo and how he lived his life. Even though I was only 3 when he stopped coaching, tonight made me realize how great he truly was and how proud I am to be a Michigan Wolverine. Go Blue!
