Adding friends and poking?

Two quick questions about members:

1. When you add a friend, does this automatically send a request via private message so that the user can add you too? Or do you have to personally ask them? Because I have gotten some friend requests through PM's that looked almost automatic..like a robot, but maybe they are just very formal people.

2. What the hell does poking do? Haha I accidentally poked someone the other day and wondered what I just did to that person.

Two basic questions that have probably been answered a thousand times and i'm sure i'll feel stupid for the answers. Please and spank you!

Yeah, it automatically sends a friend request for you.

And whoever you poked will just get a message saying something like "You've been poked by ZinisterZman" or something to that effect.

In the last month or so I've clicked "Add as Friend" on 3 or 4 users and every time it changes to a yellow box with a checkmark that says "Already Your Friend" and my friend count automatically goes up and they are in My Friends list. I just did it again just now with Thomas Nastiff...

Does this mean I sent out a request to each of these users and they have to confirm but they're already showing up in my list? (doesn't make sense) Does this mean every user I've tried to add happened to have already tried to add me even though I never saw it and I accidentally confirmed it? (unlikely) Does this mean I have magical powers to make anyone automatically my friend just by clicking "Add"? (also unlikely)

As far as I know, when you add a friend, they'll automatically show up as your friend. But they still have to accept your offer for you to show up in their friends list.
