I read "reason one" that the Koran should be burned (you know, for lulz) and stopped.
It's really annoying how Christians, as well as people from other religions, present their religion as though it is FACT rather than Belief
Muslims don't believe Jesus is the son of God? No shit! They're Muslim
Also, Muslims aren't the ONLY people who reject Jesus' crucifixion as fact. Jehovah's Witnesses don't even believe Jesus died on the cross, and they're a Christian religion.
I guess I'll read the other 9 reasons. I'm hoping they're at least a little lol-worthy, but I'm probably just going to end up wanting to punch somebody
EDIT: Reason Six: Islamic Law is irrational, so we must burn their holy book. We'll show them rational.

Okay. This is too much. I can't even take it
Reason Eight:
A Muslim does not have the right to change his religion. Apostasy is punishable by death.
So now this preacher is protesting Islam and burning their holy book.... because he is for religious freedom.
Shit like this....god dammit. I just want to move to Canada and enjoy some hockey and beer with nice people.

09/06/10, 04:21 PM
Even though I personally find religion to be a little bit shady, this is just absolutely reprehensible.
Why can't we all just coexist with each other peacefully? I know that religion can be rather competitive in who is right and who is wrong, but this pushing this too far. Don't they realize that this escalate to something FAR, FAR worse?
DeviateRogue
09/06/10, 04:28 PM
I like how they are trying to raise awareness and hopefully convert Muslims to Christianity yet reason 8 states a Muslim cannot change their religion.
If I were Muslim I'd be offended, actually, scratch that. I'm still offended, this guy makes me ashamed to be Christian.

"The Koran does not have an eternal origin. It is not recorded in heaven. The Almighty God, Creator of the World, is NOT it's source. It is not holy. It's writings are human in origin, a concoction of old and new teachings. This has been stated and restated for centuries by scholars since Islam's beginnings, both Moslem and non-Moslem."

What part of the constitution would it violate?
You, as a private citizen, can burn whatever book you want, provided it's not breaking any fire codes or city laws or anything. As long as the state isn't holding a burning session, it's free speech. If you can burn the flag, you can burn a book. Even a holy book.
I think the only leg you have to stand on is that it's similar to shouting fire in a crowded theatre, but its similarities are certainly open to debate. I don't see it being as extreme, even though I disagree with their doing so. I don't see people being directly harmed by it.. it's going to ruffle some feathers, but that's what protests are for.

I don't know what the actual laws are, but that article makes it seem as if there is a previously standing law that would forbid such burning. I wouldn't expect a state to intentionally override a city's laws just so they can do something like this, so I have no qualms with it.
I’m on vacation and trying to unplug but the news can make that hard. I just read the story about the Florida church planning to burn copies of the Koran.
What is wrong with us? It’s just like the Ground Zero mosque plan. Does this church have the right? Yes. Should they? No. And not because of the potential backlash or violence. Simply because it is wrong. The more I reflect on what happened on 8/28 the more I realize the amazing power of GOOD.
We must be the better person. We must be bigger than our problems. Bigger than the times in which we live. Burning the Koran is like burning the flag or the Bible. You can do it, but whose heart will you change by doing it? You will only harden the hearts of those who could be moved. None of those who are thinking about killing us will be affected, but our good Muslim friends and neighbors will be saddened. It makes the battle that they face inside their own communities even harder.
Let us rise above the current levels and elevate ourselves and our country. The only thing this act would prove is that you CAN burn a Koran. I didn’t know America was in doubt on that fact. Let’s prove to each other that while there are many things we can do, there are maybe many more things that we choose not to do.

If I lived near where this was happening I would take a fire extinguisher and put it out. I can't stand people that do this kind of thing for no viable reason, not thinking about the consequences and potentially ruining any progress we have made with the Middle East.
My friend at UF posted something on his facebook about showing up and burning Bibles. I pointed out that this was NOT the best response, and instead they should just show up and try to put the fires out or protest peacefully. I have a feeling there will be a lot of counter protests though.

You are right it isn't the best response, in fact it shouldn't even be considered a response. What I don't get is why someone needs to get involved in a religion they don't believe in and try and convert them, if they see it as a sin to practice Islam then fine but why go to the length of burning books, making relations worse and making people feel offended.

I believe that this actually has very little to do with religion. It's not that they believe it's a sin to practice Islam, but that they believe all Islamic people are terrorists/evil/lesser human beings just because they're different than them. It can't really be justified, it's just straight up bigotry.

Thanks for backing me up yves. The point to my post was that not all Muslims are going to commit violent acts because of the actions of Terry Jones. However, there are individuals out there (of various races, ethnicity, religious background) who use their belief system as justification for violence. If Terry Jones is attacked by a single person (or multiple individuals) because of the Quran burning, it is because he only brought it upon himself.

Say some sort of violent response happens - maybe a small bomb goes off killing 3 and injuring 9 or something. The bomber leaves a video or message of some sort saying it is directly in response to the Qur'an burning. Is the pastor in the clear? My guess is yes, because burning a book doesn't trigger a rational person to kill anyone, but I don't know.

"We do not cover every flag burning that happens in this country. We don't run every hostage tape," Michael Clemente, senior vice president at Fox News, said in a phone interview. "If we tried to cover everyone who wants us to stick a camera in front of them, we'd run out of cameras pretty fast each day. But this is really about just using some judgment."
Clemente summarized that judgment by saying: "He's one guy in the middle of the woods with 50 people in his congregation who's decided to try, I gather, to bring some attention to himself by saying he's going to burn a Quran if he gets the permit. Well, you know what, there are many more important things going on in the world than that. I don't know what they will be this weekend, but I am sure they will be more important than that."

I disagree. How does not showing one nut job protect the image of the religious right, when they give all the coverage in the world to the rest of the nut jobs? They have their own anchors cracking jokes about assassinating Obama, I really don't think they did this to protect one right-wing nutjob nobody has heard of, yet they give louder, more pronounced nutjobs their own shows.
They aren't showing it because the GOP hasn't taken an official stance on it. And they can't. They don't want to condemn it because then they go against their pro-Christian base, but they can't condone it because then they go against their "protect the troops" base. So they won't say anything about it at all. I guarantee you, if this guy actually did get the not-ground zero non-mosque moved, suddenly Fox News would be all over this guy.

Pretty stupid to burn a quran to "commemorate 9/11." It goes against Christian ideals themselves...oh the irony.

glad obama's shitting the bed so us republicans can actually make "change" and clean-up his mess.
Yep, changing things back to Bush's mess sure does count as fixing things.
Also, neither of you guys have been banned yet, so you should probably stop the carpet-bombing, now.
There are a lot of conservatives on this site who don't get banned. But if you come here and use every single post you make to take a jab and talk about how you're going to get banned and everyone else is against you and then you start attacking everyone based on that false assumption, you probably are going to get banned.
And by the way, I read your posts. People aren't calling you stupid because you're a conservative. They're calling you stupid because of the stupid things you say.

Too soon, bro. Too soon.
I retract.
The other way to protest is to tie what you hate in a bag and throw it in the river. If it dies then it was never really a threat.
I don't blame crazy people as much as I blame sane media outlets who cover them.

How does one asshole who barely has 50 people listening to him suddenly piss off people in three countries and get German soldiers attacked? This is just ridiculous. This guy's aiming for a holy war and a world war, at this point.
After he first said he'd called it off, the media should've stopped paying attention to him. I don't care if he recanted his cancellation, it's time for them to shut the fuck up and quit giving him a pedestal.

This. All this dude wants is attention to help boost attendance at his less than 50 member church. The media has given him far more attention than he deserves.
But he's still crazy... and wrong... so I blame him as well.

No, actually, that's not what I meant. I've said plenty of conservative things, myself. Here's one:
Moritorium on offshore drilling is stupid and unnecessary.
But thanks for proving my point, anyway.

Is the imam who was going to meet with the pastor the same guy who's one of FoxNEWS's main backers? Or is that a different guy who FoxNEWS demonizes, yet takes his money?

Oh, and we conservatives look down on ignorance, too.
Just as it would be baseless and wrong to assume all conservatives are ignorant, it's baseless and wrong to imply all conservatives look down on ignorance. If ignorance was so universally opposed, we wouldn't be constantly having to deal with issues like whether it's okay to build an Islamic community center in New York City. It was a political calculation that the Republicans decided to drum up in an election year, and they've done so effectively. The fact the center has opposition from some Democrats too does not somehow suggest that the opposition is justified, but that Democrats can be just as vulnerable to arguments of ignorance.
