Here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=06-11-21&c=3) are the albums that hit stores today and here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=189521) is a list of albums on sale this week. What did you pick up, and what do you think? Does Brand New (http://www.absolutepunk.net/brandnew) live up to the hype?

I don't know, it's... different. Lyrically, it didn't live up to the hype at all, but the music is good. I don't think it'll change my life like Deja Entendu did, but it's still pretty fucking amazing.

great album
it has some great songs
but the flow of the album is off , Untitled and Welcome to Bangkok just throw it off
i love Not The Sun , but some parts sound like Jesse is doing a Brandon Flower's impersonation.

personally, i love the album to pieces. i'm not gonna compare it to Deja, because that's as sensible as comparing Deja to Your Favorite Weapon. I really enjoy the hell out of the album. However...

I think a lot of people are gonna play along and be like "wow, i love it! it's great!" and really give two shits about it. Honestly it's way too mature of an album for a lot of people to sincerely enjoy. I'm not trying to toot my own horn, that's just how it is. This album is on a special kind of level.

Like I said, different from Deja, but I love it nonetheless. There are a few lines here and there where I'm just like, "holy shit....that was one of the greatest lyrics i've ever heard." And then it makes my heart happy.

For example.

"Do you believe you're missing out?
That everything good is happening somewhere else?
But with nobody in your bed,
The night's hard to get through."

So fucking simple, but he just makes it unforgettable.

Go buy this album. Hell, go buy two, then stuff the other in somebodys turkey.

to answer your question, absolutely not. theres a few good songs on there, but its nothing special. to be fair nothing could live up to the hype it got, but it seems like they didn't even try. the more i listen to it, the more i realize not including the lyrics is no big deals, because the lyrics arent worth reading or listening to

i dont really like the term mature. that is the easy way out. does this mean that their early work was pre-teen or adolescent? i think the album is good, but repetitive. it has the same vibe, tempo, structure throughout. kinda like they found their formula and decided to ride it throughout...
all the guitars have chorus or delay on them. sometimes they have chorus and delay on them... i want more rock from these guys. does mature mean less distortion?
i like the lyrics though.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but to me Deja was a couple of terrible singles, a few amazing songs, and then a few pieces of trash. It's impossible to listen to without skipping songs. This is my opinion, I'm sure you disagree. However, I think this new cd flows well. There isn't an obvious single that stands out from the record. Everything kind of fits together and works better as a record. With that being said, there is no one song that is as good as a few off of Deja. I love the cd and can't wait to get the B-sides or whatever comes with it in the indy stores.

I think it lived up to the hype, because I didn't hype it up for myself and I don't give a fuck what someone else thinks about an album, as long as I enjoy it, which I do (and very much so).

The hype was produced by a majority, a message board culture of people I do not know.

It's like "Oscar Buzz" or some other bullshit objective propoganda that gets thrown around.

Deja was a a diamond that formed in a shit storm of coal and dogshit. This is simply a great album. It doesn't need to redefine brilliance or make my hair fall out from its excellence. I just need to be able to put some headphones on, lay down on my bed and smile like a motherfucker as I listen to a fantastic cd

Completely agree with the post above. Well said mate.

Love the album, but thats cos i wasnt expecting any particular type of sound from them, i was just expecting something solid, which is what it is. And comparing it to deja is just silly in my opinion. Its a different album its not deja part 2, otherwise it would be called that.

I'm probably going to end up liking the new album better than Deja. I can't pick it up until after school, but I listened to it once on their Myspace and I already love it. Deja took me a few listens and with the fact that I loved it my first listen, I'm sure it will become one of my favorite albums.

And besides that, I can't seem to stop listening to degausser on their purevolume.

Just played Sowing Season for my radio audience, received a lot of mixed reveiws from those that actually called in. Then again, it's a morning show. Maybe Brand New fans sleep late.

From what i've heard so far, i'm still uncertain on my true feelings. Deja took a while to grow on me, but that was just because I was still into Weapon pretty heavily. I don't doubt that this will do the same.

I only listened to "Sowing Season (Yeah)" and "Degausser" going into it (they were the only two songs the band released, so I played fair ball haha) and was so stoked to see my preorder come in the mail yesterday. I put the CD into my computer and listened while I was doing some stuff. And I won't lie, during that first listen, I was disappointed.

Then I sat down at midnight last night with my headphones and actually LISTENED to it.

Yes, I think it lives up to the hype. I think the lyrics are just as good. Lacey is as confused, pissed off, spiteful, and lovesick as ever and it really shows. I really like the reoccuring themes of God and death. Seems like this band has done a lot of soulsearching. Did you all see how many people they lost in the time between Deja and its release in the liner notes? Crazy and horrible, but obviously inspirational.

As I listen to it again right now, I like it even more. I think people who don't are too stuck on comparing it to Deja ... there really is nothing wrong with this album, in my opinion.

You know, I've made it known that I didn't think this album would be any good, from before the demos, to after the demos...

Right now, after a few listens, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I can see why some people love it and the person on the first page, who said this album may be too mature for some listeneres is very pinpoint. I think I may fall into that category, admittedly so...

At least right now, I can't honestly bring myself to want to sit down and listen to the album. It's a little too all over the place, a little too eclectic for my tastes in particular. Not to say, I can't enjoy that type of music once in a while, but it's not something I can listen to all the time.

I'll take the new Spitalfield anyday right now over this album, but I'm not going to call it a bad album, which I can say has exceeded my expectations. But as for those of you, who love it, I completely understand why, just try not to get too elitist on it

i love the cd...didnt get to listen to it in full until this morning. i went to the signing at looney tunes last night and they are such nice guys. a friend was telling me how he compares the progression of this album sort of like how Thrice went from Artist in the Ambulance to Vheissu...definitely a maturation, some fans hated it, some fans liked it. I don't think there will ever be a Brand New album I won't like at the rate they are going.

Clarifying question:
When (most) people say it's "not as good as deja" do they mean to say it's not deja?

The best way I found to listen to this record was with no preconceptions. I didn't listen to the disc in search for deja material. I simply listened, with no name attached, and in doing so liked what I heard. I believe this is a great album.

After buying Brand New, remember to get the Beatles!

I am not going to fault anyone for liking this record in the least, but I have no idea how anyone could argue that the lyrics here are just as good. Compare some of these stanzas with those from Deja, and one can't help but wonder what the fuck the band has been doing the past three years.

Personally, I am surprised people are being so kind to this album. I think a lot of people just really want to like it more than they really do.

i was skeptical with the first few listen, but it has grown on me so much in the last week, i gave it a 6 after the first listen, its deffinetly been bumped up to the 9 range. Ive gotten past some of the cheesy lyrics and didnt try to critique like i did with the first few listens and it is just another great album from the nizzle

A few days later... no. The Brand New album doesn't nearly even approach the level of hype it received. Especially from the people who said it was so great who had heard leaks or review copies or whatever. The album has a few great songs, but besides that I find myself skipping a lot of it because the songs just aren't that good.

It doesn't feel like Brand New.

Sick of people saying how good this album is solely because a) they were looking forward to it so much and b) its "Brand New".

Truth be told, its a letdown, and very very average in every aspect. Some pretty good songs, but lets not kid ourselves here.

I, like many, have been waiting along time for this album....However, now it feels like I just want this album to go away (which will be the case in a few weeks) so they can make a newer/better album much sooner.

Still, cant believe they didnt use demo 4 not only on the album but as the single. Its the most radio friendly/biggest song Brand New has written to date.

This album isn't near as "witty" as deja was lyric-wise.. but I think TDAG is more personal and reflective of the past few years, and the lyrics are great if you just let it sink in more.

Im probably going to get a lot of shit from this statement since i dont know everything about brand new but jesse was influenced by Morrissey and Robert Smith was he not? Deja was def. inspired by morrissey and you can tell in the way he wrote the lyrics to that album, This new one is more of a robert smith album. personally, i love the album to pieces. i'm not gonna compare it to Deja, because that's as sensible as comparing Deja to Your Favorite Weapon.

I agree. I listened to it over and over, and I didn't like it.. until I sat down and just embraced the album for what it is, not what I expected them to bring. My favorite track is "Limousine," but I'm finding it very hard to listen to individual tracks off of this CD, because I only reeeally enjoy this album when I listen and take it in as a whole.

What does it sound like? It sounds like "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me." The whole band has matured so much, and it really is different. Just like anamericangod said, comparing this album to Deja would be like comparing Deja to Favourite Weapon-- it's different styles of music, but the band's level of "amazingness" has not lowered at all.

So YES, it did live up to the hype for me. For those who expected something specific from this band, it probably didn't, because well.. they're not the same, and it's a good thing.

I put it right at the same level as Deja. Whether it's better or not, at this point, I can't say. Sure, some of the lyrics may not be up to par, but the overall emotion in Jesse's voice seems a lot stronger, which, in my opinion, more than makes up for it.

Plus, the end of Limousine is fucking badass.

Did it live up to my expectations? Yes. Because I went in expecting to hear the next logical progression from this band, which is exactly what they delivered. No, it doesn't sound like Deja Entendu. But this cd isn't Deja. It's a whole other animal. Judge it based on its own content, not on the content of its predecessors.

microcuts82
11/21/06, 12:46 PM
Brand New managed to take a rather simple rock sound and created a series of moods and emotions that really take you somewhere. With the segues like "Welcome To Bangkok" and "Untitled" really help transition into different moods. I highly suggest taking a listen to "Fantastic Planet" by Failure and you may how instrumental tracks can really help the flow of an album. I really think that "Not The Sun" and "Archers" do NOT fit the overall mood record whatsoever; oddly enough, both of these tracks follow segue songs. Brilliantly done in my honest opinion as far as composition of an album goes. Lyrically, I love every song on the album except for a "Handcuffs". Maybe it will grow on me, but the whole metaphor in that song seems a little silly to me.

Overall, I think it is a fantastic album and love how melancholy and dark it is at times and then they sneak in a few upbeat songs. Luca is probably one of the most powerful songs on the album, and is by far the most memorable.

And as far as people being against comparing this album to Deja and YFW, you really should try and do so, and take this change from the bands perspective. After the commercial success of Deja, so many bands started to rip off Brand New and hop on the bandwagon of upbeat hooky rock tracks with clever lyrics. They really had no choice but to take their sound in a completely different direction and I feel that placing two songs that are reminiscent of their old sound is somewhat of a cop out in order to hook some fans that they may lose. Or the hook may be to let the bands changed direction grow on the listener who wasn't ready for a much more mature record.

when i went to buy it today i felt like i was being handed a shitty ep in a crowded basement. cmon brand new and interscope...the packaging sucked, i realize alot of more bands are doing with the cardboard pacaging as opposed to the jewel cases, but this one sucked. real flimsy, very little art, no lyrics. i dont get it.

I don't think it lived up to the hype at all, the demos were better than this, and i went to go see them last weekend, and this was my 4th time and they were horrible. they didn't play any of the good songs from any of the cd's. they played 4 new songs that I didn't think were too good. they didn't play jesus christ or not the sun. and i understand when you grow up you don't play as much of the old songs but playing one songs off your favorite weapon, and not have it be jude law, or 70x7 (they played shower scene) and then not play the quient things that no one ever knows. it was rediculous. i was pissed, and i know jesse changes it up when he sings live. but he would scream everything. and then when he was suppose to scream it just sounded the same. i'm waiting 4 years for the next album

I think this is my favorite Brand New album. I think a lot of people give Deja too much credit. It's the album that came out when a most people got into Brand New, and obviously that's going to mean something. I think there are one or two good songs, and the rest are excellent. I'm not sure which I like best, but to be honest, I really like both of the instrumental tracks. I haven't gotten around to learning song names yet, but the first instrumental seems to have a GY!BE/Pelican feel to it almost, while the second is more like Sigur Ros/Mum. I wish both of these songs were longer, and I think that could make it a lot better. That being said, this is pretty awesome.
Also, a lot of people will not like this cd because it has basically 0 hooks, and doesn't have the clean, poppy gloss that most every other band has right now. This is the dirtiest sounding of all of Brand New's cds and I think that's going to make a lot of people this it is not as good.

After 30+ listens so far, the new Brand New record definitely lives up to my expectations, and they were as ridiculously high as anyones. All the little annoyances around the record - the $ for the lyrics thing, the lame packaging, the no-one knowing what half the song titles really are thing... - are unfortunate, but I think the actual album is amazing.

There are a few duff lines on the record, but the lyrics are still wonderful on the whole (like, compare them to practically any record by and band apart from Deja...) and the vocals are even better. Better than Deja in that respect in my opinion. Archers, Millstone, You Won't Know... Jesse has never sung this well. And I think the music on most of the songs is the best they've produced too, and it has advanced from the last record too, which is key for me. I prefer it when bands evolve... I wouldn't have wanted Deja 2.

Still only had it 4 days, but at this point - as good as anything they've done. And my AotY.

Brand New's record is fantastic. I think the lyrics are an improvement. I love the lyrics on Deja...but these are just better. There are much stronger metaphors that sweep across the whole album brilliantly. Yes, they are much harder to 'understand' but they're also a lot better. I also like the dichotomy between the two instrumental tracks not to mention the extended King Lear metaphor in Degausser. Give it some time; let it sink in :).

Love the Brand New album. I have the same problem with it as I did Dog Problems and the new Copeland. Nothing about the music whatsoever. It's the packaging. I dont mind the cardboard package, its the fact that the booklet that comes with it doesn't reflect the image on the cover of the album. Call me anal, but I like to put my albums in a binder with the lyric book on the opposite side of it. I know exactly what album im looking at when I peruse my binder and see the new Brand New, but with no indication of such on the actual cd itself or the booklet how are my friends who often times flip through it while hanging out or in the car supposed to know what it is?

Like I said, its a little gripe, but I want a normal sized lyric book that has the album cover art. Preferrably with lyrics, not an address to send $1 to get them in the mail.

Well it took trips to four different stores before I could finally find the cd this morning. I streamed it on myspace early in the week and honestly didn't really like it....but knew I would buy it anyway. I've only had it a few hours and haven't stopped listening to it, and it's started to grow on me. I didn't like deja when I first got it, and now I love it. When I listen to deja as it goes along a I find myself sad that each song is over and I'm one song closer to the end of the album. But in the few hours I've had it, the new album has actually grown on me faster than deja did. Whether or not it will ever grow as much, no one knows.....

I'm a big fan of the artwork, and the note that says to send $1 for a complete copy of the lyrics.

It's alright. No album of the year, but I doubt much could've beaten Dog Problems (in my book, at least).

I don't know, bands new albums have been turning me off. I loved The Format and Dog Problems seemed like it was going to be great, but I never fell in love with. I don't know if it was because I listened to TEN that came out the same day or if the album is just too overhyped. The new Brand New cd starts out great, but I find myself losing attention as it plays. I find myself not listneing to the lyrics and just hearing creative noise in the background of me reading forums and stuf liek that. Both CD's great, but I think the hype machine has as all beat.

the packaging is really disappointing, and the single version of coca cola is annoying...you cant even understand him

it did live up to the hype, but as some people said it would be ludacris to compare it to deja or yfw

I think this album is the best thing they've ever done. It'd be pointless to make another Deja, this album is on a different level.

amen. I downloaded the cd like a week ago but bought it because I usually do that to support the scene and for the artwork and such... i was extremely disapointed when I opened the booklet.

I stole Brand New & Beatles today. From what me and my friend can tell, the Love version of the songs are mostly the same. Maybe we're missing something? We only tried like 4 though. The intros were a bit diff.

Brand New was nice. Actually, it was a disappoint as far as album artworks goes. I want my fucking lyrics.

Has anyone actually sent the $1 in and gotten something back?

And is all they want the $1 and they send me the lyrics back? Do I need to include an envelope with my address and postage on it, or will they use the return address to send me lyrics? I'm so confused.

I walk in and see the new releases rack. I see all of the left side empty, and I think, "Oh, shit. They already sold out BN??" I walk up and find about 20 copies of BN and a huge sigh of relief. All the Jay-Z albums had sold out.

I hate the music people buy around here, but I guess it is better for me.

I don't know, it's... different. Lyrically, it didn't live up to the hype at all, but the music is good. I don't think it'll change my life like Deja Entendu did, but it's still pretty fucking amazing.
how did deja change your life???

This is how I rank brand new:
yfw
deja
devil

so to me, the former is better than the latter. Deja was a master piece that will never be duplicated, but yfw got and gets me through hard times. I think this album is a let down just because there was no way they can do better than deja. Still a very good album.

how is the jay z album? I only read to page 4 so sorry if someone mentioned after that.

As I've been listening to the new Brand New album, I feel like I've been going through all the psychological stages one goes through when told he/she is going to die. I think I'm finally at the acceptance stage. I think it's a pretty good album, but it doesn't hold a candle to Deja.

It's a shame that so much hype has to surround it because I think I wouldn't have been expecting as much without it. Unlike the hype surrounding AVA, it seems that this hype wasn't brought on as much by the band themselves.

I just think that the album could have been golden if they had just mastered the demos. Just listening to Luca (Reprise) alone makes me think this. I don't think I have demoitis, it's just that they were that good. Curse the day I heard those demos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

i saw brand new at university of maryland recentely (11/18). first let me tell you that brand new is and will always be one of my favorite bands. the new album is great.
BUT let me tell you friends. their show was possibly one of the worst shows i've ever seen. EVERY other time i've seen them live i was so impressed. i used to consider them one of the best bands i've seen live. jesse must have been drunk. honestly. to prove it look for the UMD videos on youtube. one of them is jesse actually falling and eating shit.
he couldn't have hit a right note if his bands career depended on it. and frankly it did. the entire show was literally a mess of feedback, wrong notes, voice cracking, falling on the ground, and new badly played songs.

brand new, i will give you one more shot live. if you are anything like what you were in maryland, for the sake of keeping fans, just stop touring.

I don't think Brand New is very good live. Jesse's voice has ALWAYS sucked live. There's nothing quite like pro-tools..

The album is great, but the shit packaging and having to pay $1 for the lyrics really fucking pisses me off. Brand New is worth alot of money, you would think they could afford to put their CD in a normal jewel case with a lyrics book like ever other band out there.

I really hope other bands don't follow them. It's just bullshit giving me an uncomplete package like this. I can't put this in a cd rack to safely store the CD. It's garbage, plain and simple, and it really fustrates me. So much so, I had actually concidered not buying it.

lolz - aren't you supposed to be in a FOB thread somewhere?
first of all "lolz" who the fuck says that . lame. 2nd'ly "fob thread"... didn't even realize what you were talking about for a second .. and then it registered and it would have been funny and/or insulting if I was only a 12 year girl or THAT I GAVE A FUCK.
haha .. the funny part is I have never commented on anything ever ... and you know, the one night that i'm wasted and decide its a good idea some douche from who gives a fuck has a smart little comment to add to my drunken rant ...

so i guess i'm gonna take my ignorant ass over to this "fob thread" where I supossedly belong.
thank you for your wonderful insight .

oh yeah and i still say this album is amazing . and brand new is an extremely talented band. and jesse lacey is a hell of a lyricist ... (and i guess i'll end this with a yaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy i want to say hi to my mom!!!! wooooooooooohhhh!!!!!)
