How did TMG hear your music?
My management and I put a call in to their office, and asked if they'd like to look at business possibilities. They were interested, so we sent a copy of The Album their way.
Where do you stand on people downloading leaks?
If somebody comes to a show and asks to hear a song, I'll play it. If they record that performance on their own camcorder, upload it with their own computer, and willingly share that with the world, I have no objections. However, the songs that I release for sale are recorded on expensive equipment which I invest a lot of my own money into, understanding that my investment will be returned should people like the recordings. I don't write songs for anybody other than myself. I do, however, record them for public consumption, and just like a farmer can't afford to hand out free eggs--the recording artist can't afford to give away expensive audio productions.
What are your main influences?
My main influence would have to be my background in music theory. I don't think anything affects my songwriting more than my understanding of the elements that go into it.
When did you first become involved in music?
I knew my alphabet A through G# months before I learned the rest of it. My dad took this old chalkboard from a junkyard and put it on our porch; it was a band-room chalkboard. He would try and teach my brother and I to read and write music notation before we were even able to understand.
Has anything a fan ever said to you make you realize you've impacted their life?
Yeah, and that definitely makes my job more enjoyable and rewarding.
Do you see a difference between the east coast/west coast scenes?
Scenery, definitely so... As for scenes, I wouldn't know one if it wore weird clothing, played loud music and bit me in the ass.
Do you have any regrets about leaving H.S. at 16?
No, none. I don't think I would have been ready to leave any earlier, though. It was the right thing for me to do.
How did your parents feel about you leaving H.S. at 16?
My mom taught at my high school and helped me sign up for the test. Both of my parents love me and want for nothing but my happiness(and their own, and maybe my brother's, too).
Looking back on everything would you have changed any of it?
No.
What do you enjoy most about making music?
The sense of pride that comes in knowing you've created something that wasn't there before.
Whats the most important part about making music for you?
The sum of its parts creates importance; I don't think it can work the other way around. Making music is the most important part about making music for me.
Did you record every instrument on the album?
Nope, there were three of us in the studio, all multi-instrumentalist. So, anyone who had an idea on an instrument got their take, and if somebody else could beat it they did.
Any chance your independent album(s) ever get re-released?
There's always a chance, but I hope I never find myself in that situation.
Future tour plans?
Lots of them... And we plan on planning on planning some more after that, too.
What band(s) past/present would you bring on your dream tour?
I have a hard time finding music that I like, so I'd want to tour with somebody I've never heard of before... Somebody with thought provoking lyrics and music to match.
