From Planet Football:

Experienced centre half Cannavaro has claimed the coveted Ballon d'Or award after captaining Italy to World Cup success.

He also led Juventus to the Serie A title before the Italian giants were stripped of the honour for their role in the match-fixing scandal.

After the World Cup finals, Cannavaro followed his former Juve coach Fabio Capello to Real Madrid and he had been widely tipped to win the prize.

Cannavaro was delighted to be voted the 2006 winner and he becomes just the third defender to be named European Footballer of the Year after German duo Franz Beckenbauer and Matthias Sammer.

"Of course I will bring this trophy back to Madrid, but I would also love to bring it to Turin," said Cannavaro.

"My season at Juventus was just outstanding. I played 37 matches and scored four goals, all decisive."

He also offered his gratitude to his team-mates, adding: "It is thanks to them that I have been able to show my qualities on the pitch.

"So I want to thank my Juve team-mates and all my colleagues from the Nazionale."

Second spot in the voting went to Buffon, who was Italy's keeper at the World Cup and opted to stay at Juventus after the club's demotion to Serie B.

Arsenal captain Henry took third place after inspiring The Gunners to the UEFA Champions League final, and also helping France reach the World Cup final.

Nice to see him ackowledge Juve...

It wouldn't make sense for him to not acknowledge the team that was the reason he won the award, and it only helps his popularity in Italy, since Juve is still the most popular team in Italy.

Yeah i know it makes sense, im just saying cause he got a lot of criticism for the way in which he left etc.

Juve saved him from Inter for sure.

FUCK CANNAVARO. I acknowledge that he's damn good and all that but Thierry Henry really should have won this award.

Why, because Henry performed head and shoulders above everyone else at the biggest competition in the last four years?
I dislike Cannavaro. Henry doesn't deserve the award because he didnt play very well for France at the World Cup. I'll accept Cannavaro getting the award. There was no amazing player this year, so why not give it to the player who played very well all club season and extremely well at the World Cup?

maldini is old and not as good as he used to be. cannavaro had an amazing world cup, but other than that, i don't really see what makes him so great? henry carried his team to the uefa champions league final, brought arsenal out of the dregs of the premiership to a 4th place champions league spot, played brilliantly in the world cup, at which his team only lost on penalties. cannavaro played on a team that cheated its way to scudetto glory and now he's playing like crap for madrid because they're in a league that's not unfairly biased for the big teams (allegedly anyway).

Italians don't seem to care about tiny details like corruption

Henry wasn't brilliant at the World Cup. He had two good matches.

Cannavaro looks like he'll win the FIFA World Player of the Year. Zidane and Ronaldinho are the other two names on the shortlist and I don't think that Ronaldinho played well enough at the World Cup to win it.

Although I don't think he should have won it, I think Miroslav Klose should have gotten more consideration and maybe even a top 3 pick. He had a great season in Germany leading the league in scoring and had a great World Cup. He also lead Werder Bremen into the round of 16 in the Champions League.
