when compensating for your tiny penis, always be sure to get a good sound system for your car.

and make sure to make your penis look larger by getting a small, "sporty" car to put in your penis boosting subs and make sure you have the bass turned really high so youre "original"

sure
like getting a HUGE truck or SUV is better.
to answer the original question...
if your gonna get subs, get either 2 12" or 1 15"
a good cheap brand is rockford fosgate
then go to a pawn shop and get a good 2x (2 channel) amp probably about 200watts per channel.
that will be pretty much all you need, except for install plus parts.
you don't have to like rap or techno to enjoy subs, they make ALL MUSIC sound LOUDER, moreso than just getting really good sound speakers.
remember though if you have an old crappy car, there will be some major/minor rattling outside the car.

kenwood and pioneer are probably two of your best bet's for the setup your trying to aim for in your car. kenwood being the better of the two and slightly more expensive. but both are excellent choices.
Definately go for Pioneer. I have bought 3-4 pioneer cd players in the past and have never had any trouble. It is affordable too.

ok first of all to ass pirates that had the first several responses go eat a dick...im not trying to be particularly cool by getting speakers and im not gonna listen to rap music or drive my moms "grand am" or get a spoiler or anything...i drive a 98 honda cr-v (which is a small SUV...bigger than a kia sportage but smaller than a durango) im getting new speakers frankly because my honda factory speakers blow ass...so the consensus seems to be on kenwood or pioneer...next...how many should i get 2 or 4 6x9's or what of what size...i know 6x9 is the most common but not a whole lot else...im gettin speakers for better sound quality and subs for volume...is one 15 or 2 twelves the best way to go if im trying to stay under 500..also...is it best to go with everything from one brand...(i.e. if i get pioneer speakers get pioneer subs and amp?) or does it not really matter...
all help is appreciated

Having different brands doesn't matter at all. Those speakers are pretty good, I would go for them if I were you. Are you going to install the stuff yourself? You can save a lot of money that way, and it really isn't that hard.
I use to live in Canton Ohio, right near Akron.

Man we must share a brain or something. It's crazy how you were going to say the exact same thing.

I work at a car audio shop installing stereos... and for a cd player I would reccomend getting an eclipse unit with at least the 5v preamp outputs.
As for subwoofers, if you want a really good sub a a cheap price that is way better than rockford, mtx, and all that shit, look at elemental designs k series subwoofers. www.edesignaudio.com
If you want to go with a more mainstream brand, I'd go with JL audio, phoenix gold, eclipse... but that can get expensive... or you could try out an alpine type r... they're prettty good for the money.
I would pass on those pioneer speakers and get a component set up instead. Pioneer speakers are OK... but there are way better ones out there.

the concensus on the CD Deck... Kenwood or Pioneer
for 6x9s... do NOT get Pioneer- same with the subs
as for the subs, 1 15 and 2 12s are pretty much the same, it would depend on the space you have, 1 15 being smaller, but both are fairly equal (my pref is 2 12s)
also your "under 500" is nearly impossible if you need...
CD Deck
Sound Speakers
Amp
Subs
Hook ups/Installation
I would say you are looking at atleast 700 or 800 if you're lucky
