its like that one skit on the amanda show or all that where the video store was run by amada andher dad and this other guy and they were foreign and they would make movies and people would get all pissed.

this isn't star wars

no it is lars wars. better MUCH BETTER

from wikipedia:

Blockblister - A parody of video rental store chain Blockbuster. Blockblister was owned and operated by a family of foreigners with wacky accents. The family often greeted the angry customer by saying, "Yaga, how may we be helping you?" The customers were always unhappy as they found out the movies rented were just homemade spoofs of the actual movie made by the immigrant family, like if the customers wanted Stuart Little or Titanic, the family would give them a movie like Stuart Little or Titanic, but renamed "Staurt Lipple" or "Tidanic". The family often replied with "This movie better -- MUCH BETTER!" The unhappy customer commanded the family to play the video on their TV as it's not the video the customer wanted. The family often said the video was "Bravo" and "awesome", and offered the customer a hard-boiled egg. The customer would then yell "WHAT WAS THAT!" and was answered by the father saying "That was my daughter Blini and my son Biscotti!" Then the customer became angry and left the store without paying (normally two customers would come in during a skecth, three came early in the show's run). The family would then dance to polka music while holding eggs after the customer left the store..

I saw the trailer for it a few months ago and then the movie just faded into the background, but they finally settled on a release date and such. Woah. Because I don't like two of Jack Black's movies? In particular two of his most generic ones? School of Rock and High Fidelity run fucking circles around Saving Silverman and Shallow Hal.

Besides, it's not really much of a discussion unless you have differing opinions. And this thread is about Be Kind Rewind, a movie that I'm looking forward to, not specifically Jack Black.

I thought you were in here just to rip on Jack Black. Since you're not, I retract my previous statement. I like High Fidelity a lot (and it was funny, mostly because of Jack Black), but School of Rock just wasn't funny. We agree to disagree.

I'm not a huge Jack Black fan although I did love him in Nacho Libre. I think he just works a lot better when he actually tries to play a character with his sense of humor, instead of just being a "let's have him be Jack Black and change his name for characters sake."

Although this looks to be more of the same of the latter, I think it might actually work well. Plus Mos Def and Gondry will save the day if need be.

Saw it tonight. It was very fun. I think my favorite movies were 2001 and Boyz in the Hood. I don't really agree with the reviews saying that it is only worth seeing once. I would definitely see it again. I love the Mos Def and Jack Black team and Danny Glover was fantastic. Mia Farrow really annoyed me. I think my biggest complaint was that the lightning scene was way to dramatic and unrealistic.

Yea, the lightning part was really the only part that didn't sit well with me in the film, o and the school bus with the marching band in the final scenehaha. My favorite part though, was when they decide to shoot during the day a night scene and how they go about doing it.

I heard that on another thread too. Lame.

And I was surprised at how unattractive this movie will be to many. We had several older people walk out and I had to laugh because I wondered what they expected when they bought their ticket.

It's more mainstream than Gondry's other films yet it still holds the majority of his qualities as a filmmaker to just turn off people expecting a straight-forward film.

Only made $4.1 this weekend too. Lame.

from wikipedia:

Then the customer became angry and left the store without paying (normally two customers would come in during a skecth, three came early in the show's run). The problem with this movie is that the actually story isn't fleshed out enough. The idea of Swedeing is good fun and all, but it alone couldn't sustain the movie. I still found it very enjoyable, but I think a lot of people are going into the movie expecting a laugh out loud film, start to stop, based off the preview. Be Kind Rewind is not that kind of movie.

People see Jack Black and automatically think its going be, like you said a laugh out loud movie. And its mostly those same people that have never heard of Michel Gondry.

Yep. Not to mention Mos Def is more of the lead, so that's gonna bug some people too.

Was it really wide? The theatre I saw it at had it in the very back room.

The term basically refers to the the amount of theaters the movie plays in. Unlike say a movie like There Will Be Blood which started with a limited release, and each week got more theaters until it became a wide release and was playing at pretty much every theatre and not just the indy theaters that the limited releases usually start out in.

haha no, I know what it means. I didn't mean as in was it wider than normal wide. I meant was it actually in wide release, and not limited release. I was under the impression it was in limited release.

Yeah, it got one. Here is just a quick link to prove it, that I slapped together from google. Its right at the top.

The plagiarized claim is so fucking stupid.
No one said anything about the Scary Movies and than Epic Movie/Date Movie and Meet The Spartans. all the fucking same.

not to mention the 100's of movies in horror and teen comedy that are exactly alike.

maybe off topic but in august my uncle asks me about this movie because they filmed it last fall in my town and i had no idea. i was at school an hour away and no one even told me!

they used real cops from our town for the film and my uncle is deputy chief so he hung out with the cast every day and was invited to the after party. they treated everyone really well.

though the plot looks makes me a little skeptical...i've gotta see it just to represent where i live :)

Haha. Nice.

If this movie was playing here (no idea why it's not yet since it's a wide release), I would've watched it last night. Probably would've been better than Vantage Point. :-D

I plan on seeing this sometime in the next week. Hopefully I won't be dissapointed. I've heard so many negative things and I've been looking foward to it for quite some time.

Save your money. If you didn't like Vantage Point, then I don't know what's wrong with you? Why can't people just like a movie for what it is and not expect every single movie to be There Will Be Blood. Vantage Point was a damn good action flick that put an unfamiliar spin on a familiar genre (political-terrorism-thriller). Be Kind Rewind had so many loose ends I don't even know where to start. Did Danny Glover get locked up for his whole life? Did he make enough money to pay off those fines? What happened?

I just watched this and I loved it. I found it to be highly entertaining,
and I'm a big fan of Mos Def and Danny Glover.

I know I'm a bit late, but this thread seemed to be lacking... so what did everyone else think of this movie?

I really enjoyed the movie, though not in the way in which I expected. One of the more genuine comedies I've seen in a while. There is definitely a certain charm throughout the movie. The sweded bits, and quite a few moments in between, are absolutely hilarious.

I also quite liked how the film engaged the community of Passaic, it translated so well on screen.

Yep, since my uncle is deputy chief in Passaic he was on set most of the time and hung out with the crew.

That's awesome. They shot like a 3 second scene of War of the Worlds (shitty movie I know) in my friend's development. Steven Spielberg asked him for a Diet Coke.

We obviously need to start our own movie review program in the vein of Ebert & Roeper.
