View Full Version : Rally To Restore Sanity/March To Keep Fear Alive
So I'm going to Washington DC on October 30 for Jon Stewart's Rally To Restore Sanity (http://www.rallytorestoresanity.com/) and Stephen Colbert's March To Keep Fear Alive (http://www.keepfearalive.com/). I'm pretty stoked for this. Time to change shit! Who else is going?
A guy from my office bought plane tickets already.

i was there in like 2003 for a college field trip but had to see a lot of them all really quickly, at night.
i'm going to try to go to this.

I think they're cooler at night. They look nice all lit up. You should hit up everything on the mall. And the Air and Space Museum.

Really should just merge this with the daily show/Colbert report thread but I'll allow it at the hope that leaving it as it's own thread will make some people aware who otherwise wouldn't.

Not by violence anyway. People that think being violent, or destroying property will somehow get a group/business/whatever to listen to you is just plain stupid.

What else do you think its going to be? Do you think those two are going to go there in their serious voices? More specifically, do you think Colbert is going to go there in his serious voice and talk about marching to keep fear alive? Really? So you arent thinking they arent going to crack any jokes at all? I think the point is he is ranting about their delivery and their inflammatory rhetoric. His politics themselves are very left, very social democrat-esque (which I know you don't think is good either). I think he espousing the need for civility in the discourse.
I think that's kind of the point of him welcoming both sides of the spectrum there to his rally. You don't have to hate/smear/verb the other side to oppose them. (Credit to Paul Begala, Crossfire, may you rot in Hell.)

C'mon, be fair. Everyone knows this rally itself isn't going to change anything. If people were to come together to actually change something, you'd call it a conspiracy, or a riot, not a rally.
But the point I think is to bring together ideas, present them in a lighthearted way, while maintaining the seriousness of the issues. People will hear about this and think "wow all those people are concerned about something, and that guy on the podium sounds pretty good-hearted" and maybe this could plant the seed that causes them to begin paying attention to what's happening to the country.
At least that's the idea, I think.

It's not that he doesn't understand, it's that the nature of politics/the media has changed since MLK. I took a class on the civil rights movement last year and one of the most interesting things was when we were talking about Rosa Parks, we watched a video clip where she was being interviewed about why she did what she did. The journalist let her speak and finish her thoughts. She spoke for minutes at a time before the interviewer interrupted her.
This would not happen in 2010's soundbyte media. One side would find something she or MLK said, take it way out of context and the debate would be about whether MLK is a terrible person instead of the validity of the civil rights movement. This is why peaceful protesting hardly works anymore.

Ok, the march did make change in that it eventually led to political pressure on kennedy and co., it focused the attention of whites on this issue. But my point is like this: The march on washington was absolutely massive not because of his speech, but because of the ground the movement gained over years and years of struggle through acts that try to force change, like the boycotts and sit-ins, and others that test the racial climate, like freedom rides, all which are dangerous. Again, i'm not saying speeches aren't important.
Which is why it's bullshit people are bagging on this rally like Stewart and Colbert aren't worthy of being in that spot because it's just a "comedy act", which doesn't serve their satire any justice. Did you see Colbert's testimony in congress? Inferring from polls that have been televised, most liberals in this country probably identify with and trust Stewart and Colbert more than anyone in the political scene, and rightfully so. You guys act like just because they can smile and tell a joke that all their political aspirations and opinions are stupid and invalid, when the reality is they are extremely intelligent, have a great deal of power and it's awesome that their using it.
We have to rally and gather our numbers and ideas before we can go about making real change and actively fight against the laws that are in place.

Haha. I just love it when someone says something incredibly stupid, and then they get called out, so they ramble on for a paragraph about absolutely nothing at all and drop a "but I never said exactly what I said" in the middle, thinking the length of what they said will make them sound intelligent enough to where nobody notices that they've absolutely directly contradicted themself.
He could've just said "Oh, I guess you're right" and we'd all be a lot happier, haha.

It single-handedly inspired me when I first saw it in the 1st grade (at a time when my impressionable young brain was still developing). I consider it a turning point in my childhood when I learned not to judge a person based on their skin color. I can only imagine that the time it was delivered and the social climate at the time, it certainly made an impact on America.

What's up with all of the ego that suddenly got injected in this section? It leaves no room for dissenting opinions and is really pathetic considering we're on the internet.
If you want to talk about the points, let's go. I guarantee you you can look at my posts back in the day on this section and i'd be the first to concede a point, I love the idea and I learn from it. But "Are you stupid?" and "you're being dense on purpose" are not arguments, and this behavior seems to be a trend in this section recently.
I learned not to judge a person based on their skin color
So as a child, you made presumptions about people from their color before you heard this speech?
Stewart had the upper hand in 2004 on Crossfire because he had deniability toward the political discourse in this country. This rally will blur that line, unfortunately. He'll no longer be given a pass by the rest of the media as "just a comedian".

I disagree. It won't blur that line any more than his show already does. The rally is basically a parody of a rally. It isn't for any speific party (Stewart tried pretty hard to get Bill O'Reilly to show up, but O'Reilly's schedule is already busy that weekend.) It would be one thing if he was doing it for awareness to a political cause, but he's doing it in parody, like I said. The cause at hand is toning down insanity coming from the media on both sides of the politcal spectrum. Basically, it's like the Daily Show, only performed on Capitol Hill, and with a much larger audience.

While Beck throws his rally and then the left has to counter with their own rally the administration is undermining our freedoms but everyone is only looking at what the media is putting out there for them to lap up.
It is all a diversion.

You know The Daily Show and The Colbert Report aren't 'the left', correct?
What exactly has the administration been doing that John Stewart is diverting us from? Oh, and I'd like real sources, or fuck, even real thoughts, from you in reply. 'Undermining our freedoms' doesn't mean anything.
Are you really fucking 38? Because you sound like an irritating 12 year old who just got their first Rage Against The Machine album.

I honestly think the attendance for both of these rallies is going to be minimal.
First of they were announced way too early. I mean we've been hearing about this since early September. And it still hasn't happened yet? This should have been held weeks ago...they lost all their momentum. The only ones who seem to be caring now are the Stewart/Colbert fanboys.
Also most of Stewart and Colbert's demographic are college kids and guys in their mid-twenties. The same types who will go plan on going, but they'll go out drinking the night before and sleep through their alarm clocks the next morning and go "oh whatever I'll just watch it on TV".

Hmm I know a lot of college kids, including my 3 friends, who are going and high school kids as well. I think they'll have a nice crowd. Wish I could go instead of having to study for an orgo test.

Hahahahaha. Uhhh....what? Too early of notice? Do you work a real job? You do realize most places of work usually require at least one month's notice, right? Seriously, stop.
Those buffoons gave people too much time to plan! What fools!

Yea, you're right. They should have given everyone 1 weeks notice. That would've made sense.
Anyone else watching this? It's uh very musical. Is that the roots?

The Roots are probably the best way that you can kick off any show/rally. I'm wondering about the schedule though. It's 3 hours, so I'm imagining it'll be a mix between other music/comedy acts and then the speeches themselves.
Also, wouldn't be surprised if this becomes an annual event.

Gorgeous day.
With john legend as well. The performance so far has been very good. Not perfect but uh... that's how you know it isn't lipsynched.
