You don't have to spend it just on Brand New stuff, you can actually buy anything from MerchDirect. You just have to buy it through the Brand New MerchDirect website. I did it and got the promo with only buying 1 Brand New shirt (the other 2 were Thrice and Say Anything). I know that I got it because when I went to checkout it was on there.

it's not weird at all, nor is it a trick. it's just a gimmick to increase sales. if people are at maybe $36, they might buy more if they know they'll get something for free, which is good for the company, band, and consumer. they just sold 60k albums also.. i really don't think they're broke.

A ton? I used the term kind of losely, but in the context of this conversation I would say tht TON would be defined as enough to RECOUP + put a couple hundered G's in your pocket.

THerefore, they have not sold a ton.

Very good sales numbers though...unfortunately they had to spend a fuck load to sell that many and therefore may have NEVER recouped. Hard to say.

hmmm, if it looked REALLY cool, i'd consider it. but for the record, $20,000 in merchandise isn't a shitload of money by any means. consider how much goes to merchdirect, then how much goes to actually making the merchandise, and then divide what's left by 4 people in the band...

seriously though, the $1 lyrics thing seems pretty strange. i hope they do an interview and get asked about it, if for no other reason then to provide an elaborate answer.
