Geoff (Thursday (http://www.absolutepunk.net/thursday)) loves (http://www6.islandrecords.com/thursday/messageboard.php) Brand New (http://www.absolutepunk.net/brandnew)'s new album.
know that there's already a post about the madness that is the new brand new record, but seriously-- WTF?
Deja had some really cool songs but it was like the verses were Bright Eyes and the chorus was blink 182-- This record is fucking amazing
Sowing Season is the fucking shit. Jesus Christ is so beautiful. I could go on and on... even the instrumental is monstrous.
If people don't like this as much as Deja, I'll be super bummed. Sometimes you just have to follow a band down the road they've chosen and just go with it.

Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes, writes better lyrics than Jesse and Geoff combined.
It's beyond me how he can even compare BN's verses to BE...honestly...they're in totally different leagues talent wise...(the latter being the better)

Two things that have no impact what-so-ever on Conor's lyrics.
Dustin > Conor > Jesse > Geoff.
My reasoning:
Dustin's lyrics have been great on 3 albums. Conor on 3 (I didn't like the lyrics on Wide Awake), Jesse on 2, Geoff on 2. I don't think the lyrics are as strong on ACBTLD (but it's my favorite Thursday album anyway).
I dunno, in the end, they're all extremely talented - to be listed in the same sentence as these other artists should be an accomplishment in itself. People get too wrapped up in comparison. It's stupid. There's no need (or real reason) to compare different artists. It's a fruitless endeavor.

i can see where you are coming from with that opinion. I don't know, i just see it the other way. i think his manner is appealing. He just doesn't care...about anything...at all. He doesn't play by any "rules", he just does what he wants. Plus he's an insanely nice guy....i met him outside of a show and he was just so willing to take a picture and such....so i guess i'm a bit biased....

everyone is nuts. there is no way this record is better than deja. some of the songs are good, but this shit is way too top heavy. the only decent tracks past 5 are the instrumentals. people need to quit jerking off to this and make a real song-by-song comparison. even if the first 5 songs were better than everything on deja (and they aren't..at all), this record would fall becuase it doesn't continue to be great on each song. there isn't a weak song to be found on deja, and they're all over the place on this one...luca, handcuffs and you won't know, especially. this can't be said about a single track on deja.
and play crack the sky ALONE, as in by itself, is better than this entire record combined.
(and don't think i hate this one, becuase i gave it an 8.7. deja was just that good)

I'm not into Dustin's writing as much, but that's just a matter of taste really. I have to agree though, Conor knows how to write a better song, lyrics wise then Jesse. Something seems off at times about Jesse's writing. I can't put my finger on it, but Conor always writes a good song.

IMO, Bright Eyes is part of the "scene" as well.
I think the "scene" tries to bring Bright Eyes in...but he is sort of apathetically refusing (oxymoron?)... By saying things like "stop singing along, you make me feel like dashboard confessional" and telling texas he "hates their fucking state"...he is kind of rejecting acceptance from anyone and everyoen who doesn't like his music...which is a lot of people in the scene...

all 4 of those guys are amazing lyricists. i really couldnt say who I think is the strongest, definitely not Geoff. probably conor or dustin. i'd say...
conor>dustin>jesse>geoff, although again, all 4 have made my jaw drop with certain songs, whether it be the first time I heard 'hit the switch', 'tommy gun', 'cross out the eyes' or 'to what end', and the fact that all 4 of those songs were written before any of them were 25 is pretty insane. all 4 write beyond their age and always have.

I like Geoff's lyrics slightly more than Jesse's because they're about a more varied source of topics. For instance, Signals Over the Air is about womens' rights, Paris in Flames is about homophobia, For the Workforce is about the repetitiveness of corporate America, Counting is about wanting to get out of a small town, etc...
But damn, Jesse's lyrics have reached new heights on the new album with all the religious themes.

i agree geoff has more variety to his, but at times its too abstract and stream of counscioiusness, which is cool, but i prefer more specific and to the point lyrics (like jesse and conors') that are laced with personal autobiographical experience, metaphors and double entendras (sp?)

i've heard he takes many, many takes in the studio to get a song write. his range is definitely more limited.
jesse probably has the best voice out of the 4 we've mainly been discussing. conor, geoff and dustin all have limited range, although dustin has really improved his since 'identity crisis' probably moreso than any of the others.

however, i absolutely hate a city by the light divided. it's not a good record. at all. it sounds nothing like thursday. the devil and god is tenfold a better record. brand new will probably land at #3 or #4 album of the year for me. thursday will not crack the top 20.
let it rain...

"Both my band and Jesse's band put out subpar records this year"
neither did.

I'm gonna be the guy that says Conor, Jesse, Geoff,...and Tom/Mark are all good songwriters.
1) Thursday and Brand New are two of my favorite bands; Thursday is by far my favorite band of all time, and presently, however.
2) Geoff Rickly > Jesse Lacey
3) Geoff's words regarding the album are almost word-for-word what I'd expect him to say; Geoff is listening to much more technical/theoretical music that most of AP, and it's easy to see why he likes TDAGARIM much more--he's into that style A LOT.
4) <3 Geoff <3 Jesse

i can see where you are coming from with that opinion.
I just think Brand New is too, too,...just too much in the "scene" and it's a bit annoying. It's nice having some separation from it with Bright Eyes....
i agree...i met conor at a show as well, and he was a really great guy. jesse seems to be a bit of a prima donna.

The chorus was blink-182?
What?
yea, i can agree with that. they had the mellow verse, bulky chorus for a lot of the songs on deja.

A City By The Light Divided < Keep my $15
I'd say the Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Interpol, Trail of Dead (pre-WA), The Shins, and Cursive, among others, all write better lyrics than both Brand New and Thursday. I wouldn't put either of the latter two even close to the best lyricists of bands mentioned on this site, but that's just me.

a city by the light diveded was an awesome album but I think the levels on most songs were too damn high. Instruments and vocals were often pushed to the point of destructive distortion that the songs could have been better recorded. In my opinion.
lyrics-wise, it's hard to compare. Thursday has some great lyrics (war all the time), Brand New has great lyrics (me vs. maradonna vs. elvis, play crack the sky). Conor probaly edges them out in that department, but not in execution.
I think in a few years, another release or two, we'll be adding forgive durden to the lyrics debate. (I am a heart watson the rest of me is mere appendix) has incredible lyrics.
not a big thrice fan, love the solo cd though. Got it preordered. The lyrics there seem very good too.

everyone is nuts. there is no way this record is better than deja. some of the songs are good, but this shit is way too top heavy. the only decent tracks past 5 are the instrumentals. people need to quit jerking off to this and make a real song-by-song comparison. even if the first 5 songs were better than everything on deja (and they aren't..at all), this record would fall becuase it doesn't continue to be great on each song. there isn't a weak song to be found on deja, and they're all over the place on this one...luca, handcuffs and you won't know, especially. this can't be said about a single track on deja.
and play crack the sky ALONE, as in by itself, is better than this entire record combined.
(and don't think i hate this one, becuase i gave it an 8.7. deja was just that good)
saying one song is better than an entire record is ridiculous...come on now
i like deja more as well, but there is no way play crack the sky is better than the entire new record.

I honestly think The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is a lot better than Deja Entendu. Granted I love all three of their records and they represent different times in my life but TDAGARIM is just better musically and lyrically in my opinion (Jesse is no where near one of my favorite lyricists, I'm talking in terms of Brand New records).

i disagree 100%...Geoff is talented...but lyrically? not even close
Seriosly dude? Geoff: "She the song that you tried to sing, and the note that you couldn't hit, so you lock her up in a music box, turn the key on all of us..." Jesse: "I’d arrest you if I had handcuffs, I’d arrest you if I had the time, I’d throw you down in the backseat, As if you committed a terrible crime" NO CONTEST!!!! I love both bands with a passion, but Geoff is one of the best lyricists of our time, and probably of all time. I love Brand New and Jesse's lyrics, but against Geoff? C'mon!

what a terrible argument. i've seen this so many times. every band has good lyrics and every band has lyrics that aren't as good. you can't just compare two random lyrics and act like you've made some great point. i bet i coluld find some terrible thursday lyric pretty easily and compare it to about a million great lines by brand new. and i wouldn't be making any point except that ONE lyric is better than the OTHER.

I disagree..strongly.
deja was more commercially viable the new album is more progressive though, sorta reminds me of Rx Bandits progress (in its composition not its sound)....
And for my 2cents, dustin, jesse and thursday are all awesome writers, i think of the three jesse is the more poetic, but rather than rank them, id sooner say they are all awesome and leave it at that.

TDAGARIM is a superior album to Deja IMO. Deja was an album for angsty teenage boys...it seems like on the new record Jesse really extended himself lyrically and emotionally to take on different perspectives in his writing, and also reach a new, raw level of honesty. I like the fact that he doesn't hide behind one-liners on the new record, it's much more visceral.

Anyway..tdagarim is amazing and i love it more with every listen, hard to compare with deja considering they are pretty much different genres-they went from pop punk/emo to i don't know progressive? their progression is unbelievable. "Jesus Christ" just blows my mind. Can anyone make sense of "We all got wood and nails, your tortured (and hanging) factory"??

i don't think play crack the sky is even close to a good brand new song, whatever my opinion. I love all 4 artists and I definitely agree with Geoff about the Bright Eyes comparison. Jesse whined wayyy too much on Deja Entendu and it was annoying. Devil and God sounds like he found his style, or styles because he has a very good range on it.
As far as Thrice is concerned, I am so fucking excited for their new cd. I think that everyone should shut up until that cd comes out because I'm sure it will do the talking for them.
Geoff is better at conveying emotions than Jesse, Conor, or Dustin.
At This Velocity makes me feel like i'm in the plane with them and Sugar in the Sac makes me feel so alone that I could cry.
