I just finally bought and listened to this CD. Slightly late, i know. While it's no "No Good For No One Now", as always, Mike impresses me. He is one of the few artists that doesn't have to change his sound at all, and i'm always satisfied with the results. Any other opinions?
Yeah, this is an amazing record. I think his sound has changed a bit on this record though. But it still retains the overall feel of his past records. The songs are lusher. Especially 'A Bird In Hand', with it's 80's drum beat & layered vocal harmonies. It adds elements that have never been in Owen songs before, but couples them with the same sound he HAS had before. I think that's what makes the progression on this album sound so awesome. Retaining his trademark sound while expanding on it, all at once.
The only song that i wasn't too sure about on first listen, was Bag Of Bones. Very different rythym. I'm not even sure why i couldn't get into it as much as the others. But i've been listening to the album for a while now, and this song definitely gets better with each listen. Now it's one of my faves. The only problem i have with Owen albums is, they are all way too short. This one's only 8 tracks at just under 38 min. It wouldn't kill him to add at least 2 more songs.
Also, it's great to see that it not only got a 5/5 review in Alt Press, but Mike got a mini interview in the reviews section too. More people need to get on this! Mike deserves all the success he can get.

I think Bag of Bones might be my favorite song on the record. A Bird In Hand is amazing, both in the beat and the lyrics.
I do not like Femme Fatale at all though.
I wish it were longer too. Not that i have the greatest memory, but when i saw him last.... Jan. he played a new song that doesn't sound like any on the CD and i really liked it. Too bad it didn't make the cut for whatever reason.
Yeah, i think it's weird that he put a cover on the record. Femme Fatale just doesn't have the same spark that his original stuff does. I still like it though. I think mainly because he put his own spin on it. But yeah, compared to the rest of the songs, it just doesn't stack up.
Ooh, maybe i'll have to search youtube for this unreleased song. Sounds great!

"The Sad Waltzes Of Pietro Crespi" would have to be my favorite track off the album and it's one of my favorites this year. The sound changed just enough to offer something a little different yet still sound like all other previous releases.

I need this CD and I'll be searching high and low for it this weekend. I can't get enough of the songs he's posted from it. If I can't find it, I'll definitely tack it on as a late Christmas gift idea for the fam, haha. Never too late for good music.
