this may seem pointless, but i've been talking about it for the past 15min or so with my friend and i can't decide. what do you think is generally the track number that holds the best song on the album. i was struggling between tracks 2 and 3... went with 2. giving examples as to why you chose what you did in encouraged :-)

Glassjaw - Tip Your Bartender
Jakob - Controle
Refused - Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull
Thursday - The Other Side Of The Crash/Over And Out (Of Control)
Underoath - In Regards to Myself

6/7's:
Thursday - Asleep in the Chapel
TBS - One-Eighty by Summer
TBS - Twenty Twenty Surgery
PTW - The Realist
mewithoutYou - Seven Sisters/The Soviet
mewithoutYou - Nice and Blue pt2
Circa Survive - The Great Golden Baby

12/13's (the ender)
Norma Jean - Scientifiction
CONVERGE - JANE DOE
Brand New - Soco Amaretto Lime
Finch - Dreams Of Psilocybin
Glassjaw - Two Tabs of Mescaline
Glassjaw - Hotel of the White Locust

i thought it would be hard to find that many track 13's... the albums i listen to are generally under 12 tracks long.
but i do agree with your "opener, middle and epic closer" statement

Yeah most albums hover around 11-12 tracks, but the closer is probably a more general way to put it. There usually seems to be character to those songs too, the opener is usually more rocky and edgy whilst maybe not quite as catchy, the middle beautiful or amazingly catchy and the closer more epic.

This is ridiculous. There can't be a "best track number", when every album is different. Firstly, a lot of albums i listen to have all amazing tracks. And if there is a best track on an album, it could be any number. Do people not see how stupid a question this is?

i agree with the opener, awesome middle song, and epic closer...but i went with track 2 as my choice beacuse songs with the first song as the best seem to have nothing else to offer, and i love
the ponytail parades-emery, sic transit gloria-BN, jesus of suburbia-GD, the taste of ink and i caught fire-The Used, smile in your sleep-silverstein....and so many more.

i guess though, it just depends on the album

well then don't do the freaking poll if you don't feel the same way. this is for the people who know what i am talking about. but i'm still pretty sure that if you thought about it, you too would find a track number that most frequently holds the best song. go on... think

i usually love 1,2,3,6/7, and the closer

Most of the times number 3 is the leadsingle, so 3 often contains a great track. But I went with the no.1 spot, cos it always comes in with a bang! :)

I didn't do the "freaking poll". I know what you're talking about. And it's ridiculous. But whatever. I'm not stopping you from having your fun. I just wanted to state how preposterous a notion it is to have a "best track number".

A lot of discs have strong openers, so I went with 1.

you gotta open big and end strong. either the first, or last are most important.

also the song in the middle, you wouldnt want people to get bored of the cd.

it just depends on how the album is mixed, production its very crucial to me now as to how well i think an album is. openers are key as well as a closing song but there cant be filler in the middle.

i've had this same discussion with my friends, i went with 7, lots of my favourite songs are track 7...
logan to government centre (brand new), come back (the early november), breathe underwater (emanuel), skyline drive (mae), i could go on...

why is 4 winning?

Vicky82

i always think #6 is the best. its half way through the album so it makes you listen to the rest...thats just what i always find

sasalukac
12/08/06, 12:27 PM
why is 4 winning?

the most people voted for it.
i think that's only answer to that question, there is no logic behind voting for any of these (except the beginning, middle and end argument), it's mostly just subjective

would anyone like to name some songs on this track number?

It's not really that "preposterous." I have read in various publications that in most full length albums, what the band feels is their strongest track usually is track 6 or 7.

4

Brand New - Tommy Gun
The Format - She Doesn't Get it
The Early November - The Mechanic
Death Cab - Sound of Settling
My Chem - To The End
I can make a mess - Best Happiness Money Cany Buy

No point to this argument but i figured i would support my answer anyways...number really don't matter though, generally i would say i like the beginning of cd's more though

EamonKid
12/11/06, 10:27 AM
Lit - A Place In The Sun, Track 2 My Own Worst Enemy.... I know there's lots of others with good track 2's but that came to mind first.

a lot of "pop" artists have put, or still do put #2 as their first single or gonna-be-big hit single. i noticed that back in the day when i use to buy cds

thescoremag
12/11/06, 11:39 PM
if you really analyze a CD of any caliber...#8 is usually where a band puts its second single...look way back and to the present and you will discover this. it is a known fact, i went with good old #8.

i said 13+ because i had no idea what was going on, i though we were just picking our favorite numbers.
number 4 is always the best though, it's like the cleanup hitter in baseball.

I couldn't offer up any great explanation but I seriously doubt, songs are just randomly placed on a cd. There has to be a science to it, Why there is a slower balad song at the end of cds, strong opener middle and ender etc. its not random placement. very interesting topic though.

notoaststereo
12/13/06, 03:28 PM
for me its usually 2 or 7

taking back sunday - bike scene and timberwolves
braid - a dozen roses
copeland - she changes you mind
the early november - something that produces results

heytheredelilah
12/14/06, 04:56 PM
jude law is number 2 so i pick number 2

SykoBadger
12/17/06, 07:48 PM
i vote track two... I dunno if it's always the best, but I feel like it's the most consistently good, and usually pretty upbeat and rockin, too... examples, from flipping through my nano's playlist:

Brand New - Sic Transit Gloria
Cartel - Honestly
Fall Out Boy - Dead on Arrival
Gatsbys American Dream - Pompeii
Halifax - Our Revolution
The Matches - Audioblood
MCS - Everything Is Alright
MCR - Dead!
OK Go - Do What You Want
Our Lady Peace - Happiness and the Fish
Panic! - The Only Difference...
TREOS - Planning a Prison Break
Say Anything - Woe
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
TBS - Liar

I am always partial to the epic ending track, but that only works on CDs that actually have them (midtown, JEW, cartel, say anything, and the last few tracks of Abbey Road come to mind...)

and it is now clear i have put too much effort into this
