View Full Version : The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act

I am not even a US citizen, but this new piece of legislation is putting the ability in the hands of lawmakers there to DELETE sites from the internet and generally begin the censoring of the internet at will.

Has anyone heard of it?

Here is the PDF:

this can't be real...right? because what the fuck.

maybe the people who are getting scammed should pay attention to the bazillion warnings/tips on how not to get scammed that have appeared as a result of this These websites are often based overseas yet target American consumers. American consumers are too often deceived into thinking the products they are purchasing are legitimate because the websites reside at familiar-sounding domain names and are complete with corporate advertising, credit card acceptance, and advertising links that make them appear legitimate.
OH MY GOD I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY A FAKE SITE WOULD HAVE CREDIT CARD ACCEPTANCE

but more to the point, back the fuck off my internet.

Wow, it's a pretty long list isn't it?

This is frightening. I mean, Western citizens get up in arms when China censors and monitors it's own media (incuding internet) but here is a bill with the power to accomplish the exact same thing.

I also read an article that stated that the American government desires the ability to monitor encrypted cellphone signals.
Seems there's a policy of media outlet control in place.

It could potentially set a precedent for censorship on the internet, which could (in slippery slope hypothetical) lead to the government blocking sites that they don't like.

So it basically means nothing to your daily surfing as of right now.

Did you read it? Some of the sites shut down were search engines. The didn't house any files directly. Same idea as searching Google for torrents.

For the most part, i can see why they're doing this and how they're gonna justify it and all that, but my main problem with this is that the act hasn't even passed yet (at least that ive read about so far) and they're already using it to bring sites down.

They didn't use "the act" to bring the sites down. They used an already in place law (U.S. copyright statute).

Websites do shit that is obviously going to get them in trouble ... and then bitch when they do get in trouble. And searching Google for a torrent rarely gets you the actual torrent file; you get sent to one of these other pages. I think the government is being stupid about this. As is the copyright owners. However, the websites involved know this shit is coming. Their feigned ignorance is just as bad.

The laws in place have always just affected websites who's servers/hosts are on American soil. They have no pull on sites outside of the states who's laws dont care about such things (ie. sweden until piratebay got hit) So i'm assuming all 82 sites were hosted in America. But illegal downloading and filesharing has been under fire here in america for years now. So why wait until now to just blast out 82 sites if the laws have always been in place?

I dunno, due process? Probably lots of reasons.
