I've saw a headline today stating that Bush is considering what steps to take in the conflict in Liberia. It said that he was under international pressure to send in peacekeepers. I just thought it funny that now the world wants us to go in and help an opressed people, when they called us "imperialistic" and such when we helped out the Iraqis.

There’s a revolution in Liberia. Monrovia is under siege. The president, Charles Taylor, is refusing President Bush’s request to step down. People are dying. It’s not a pretty sight. Oh .. I almost forgot. The revolutionaries who are trying to unseat the current regime are, in large part, Muslim.

Now … get this. There are some folks out there who want the U.S. to intervene, militarily, if necessary, to stop the bloodshed in Liberia. Among the entities asking the U.S. to intervene are France, Russia and The United Nations. That’s right, France and the U.N. are asking the U.S. to possibly send troops to Liberia, presumably to dethrone Charles Taylor.

Why Liberia and not Iraq? I guess France doesn’t have any huge oil contracts with Taylor that need to be preserved. Then again, maybe because America would presumably be working with, instead of against Muslim insurgents.

Because the US does not have huge economic and political ties with Liberia. We more or less can't gain anything economically or politically by helping them out, where as in Iraq Haliburton will now likely hold more wealth than microsoft and the US effectively has a new state in the middle east...

I don't really think we should get involved. There's no reason to risk American lives if there is no American interest. Let Africa settle its own little squabbles.

- Taylor is stepping down

- The fighting has been going on since 1980, this isn't a new thing. Over 200,000 people were killed in the early 80's.

- Nobody is asking the US to intervene militarily. They're asking the US to lead a peacekeeping mission. Yes, this still puts the lives of American troops at risk, but not quite in the same manner.

Honestly, I think it's a good call for Bush to be considering this. If he wants to fight for justice and freedom like he so very often proclaims, he should at least be consistent.

well, yeah they aren't asking for the US to invade the country, but the US military would be heavily involved. i also agree that bush should help out...personally though, i would like to see the nations that have bashed the US for being imperialstic and are now asking for their help, to contribute something (France, Russia, Germany)
