As some of you may have noticed, I've been gone for about 10 days. That's not that long when you think about it, but at the rate I was posting, it is ages. I wanted to actually live a bit before I started working, so I felt that a vacation from the boards would be good for me. Well, now and then, I would check on the place, and it was not pretty. I saw nothing to inspire me to return, but I figured I would just do it anyway tonight. Then I read the now infamous thread of Renewed Future. And that was really just the last straw for me.

Here's the way I saw the thread: RF came in and asked if other people here like hardcore. That's pretty understandable to me. I know that some people have to wander over here for some reason other than the news and features. I know that I did. I believe that if he had said "Does anyone here like (insert genre here) instead of that shitty, screaming hardcore stuff," he would have hardly received any hatred. I really think it hits a little close to home when people come here and insult pop-punk. It's valid to wonder if people like anything outside of a very narrow slice of music here though. Just a week ago there were a half dozen different Brand New threads on the first page here. Maybe that sort of thing flies in the reviews section, but in general? When was the last time that a poll or tournament didn't have Thrice, Brand New, TBS, Finch, or TSL as a winner? I have gotten more than my fair share of adoration and respect here, so I don't feel I'm stepping out of my place by saying anything.

The closed-mindedness of the average board member's musical taste is bad enough, but that thread just completely devolved into a lynching. I was disappointed that Laura forgot that only a month ago she was on the receiving end of an unfair fight. In case you don't remember, a lot of people here didn't like how freely she posted pictures and asked people left and right to be here boyfriend. I defended her, not because I thought they were entirely unfounded accusations, but because I thought it was too early for so many to judge her. As it turns out, she's very well-liked here now. Why was RF jumped on? Because he expressed an opinion on music. If we flamed everyone here who said negative things about bands, this board would be empty. I know about the "we flame newbs to toughen them up" defense. But, that's horseshit in this case. While Brandon made a decent reply, he felt the need to follow it up with a physical threat. When one person is on the wrong side of an unprovoked 8-1 flame, then I don't think the admin/mod should step in and try to intimidate the guy with his size. The argument is especially flawed because he was banned. After carefully reading that thread, he was not the deserving one for that honor.

That wouldn't have pissed me off so much if it didn't remind me how much I differ in taste than the majority of the board. I've recently been posting more at another board. The people there have really impressive knowledge of music. Sure, you can fault them for praising the obscure a bit too much, but I'd rather people err on that side of the line. They are also able to back up "this sucks" with coherent criticism. Oh, and there's a much better sense of humor on that board. Sorry for making it sound like I've found a better lover, but it's a more suitable place for me.

Finally, I'm really tired of having 15-year olds make inane comments about punk. I don't consider myself the ultimate judge of punk and I hate to label, but kids who use the word ought to educate themselves. Find out how it actually started what it was actually about, not what you read on a sticker. I'll even help out, try "Please Kill Me" or "England's Dreaming." I bring this up because I saw 7-12 year olds at my camp singing along to Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. It made me realize the path most people followed to ap.

So, this isn't exactly goodbye. I'm not giving any shoutouts. I'm not asking for pleas to stay or invitations to fuck off. I'm just telling you why I think this board isn't all that interesting to me anymore. I'll still be around and post occasionally, but never at my old rate.

i said almost the same thing (or attempted to anyway) to brandon earlier today. (thank you for completely ignoring me and cutting me off at every given opportunity and not allowing me to finish my thought. especially only to do so and then pretend as if it never happened.)

ultimately i know that regardless of what was just said about him, he will most likely approve of your post and praise it because he hasnt the ability to come with a decent thought of his own (no offense).

Brandon has a problem with speaking for all of us in his posts, when in reality, most of us disagree with him on several issues. I respect that everyone has their own opinion and I just wish he'd speak for himself instead of dragging us all into it (i.e. when he posts things like "No one here likes you," when it's actually only himself and a few others who dislike the person).

I'd suggest anger management classes.

stuff like that is bullshit. many of times people have came here wanting a good discussion, and what they were given is a beating instead. when this happens, i desperately want to say something to these people and tell them how immature they are acting, but i don't, because i know that they'll just turn on me, because i guess i'm still a "newbie" or whatever. half of the time i'm hesistant to reply to ANY thread because i never know who's going to flame me for whatever simple, opinionated statement i made.

i've thought about leaving this place also, but i've met a few really great people, and i guess that sort of makes things better.

i hope you still remain posting here devin, even if only from time to time, because i really enjoy reading your stuff, and you make this place worth coming to.

You know, i might have thought about taking that post into consideration, but you just completely contradicted yourself. If you're going to make a post saying I have a problem with speaking for more than just myself in my post's, then don't do exactly what you just accused me of in your post.

Before you accuse me of something, try to not do the same thing in your acquisation. What you just said spoke for "most" of the board, as you put it. the board hasn't changed at all. some day's its fun. some day's its boring. sometime's lots of people post. sometime's barely anyone post's. you get my drift ? you just gotta stick around. lot's of people seem to have the idea that this board has changed. in all honesty, it's no different than from when it was over a year ago when i joined. with everyone leaving and cutting back the amount of post's a day i don't see how anyone can expect this place to get better.

anyways, like ive said, i didn't ban him just on my choice and my choice alone. i got a couple emails, and many people on aim tellling me or asking me to ban him. i thought i'd be doing the board a good deed by banning him since so many people requested it. but i guess not. im just here to try to make this a better place. if what i did was a bad choice and/or was wrong, im sorry.

The problem with this board is everyone is scared to actually share their opinions. Devin does it regularly, and he is seen in a good light, so what he says is accepted and generally agreed with. The kid you just banned, he did the same, and you banned him. For the entire time I've been here (5 months) it seems the only people who have the confidence to express their opinions are the ones who can defend themselves and don't mind taking some flak for it.

The people who express their actual opinions and sentiments on the board are:
Devin
Colin (Ronin)
Greg
Cole
Amber
Brandon (to an extent)
Bill
and the guys in the politics forum (Justin, Matthew, Zach, Cal, Yeat)

The rest of you will follow the masses, and agree or disagree in accordance to everyone else. That's what makes this board so dull at times, there's no debate, no arguement of an intelligent nature. Sure there is arguement, but it always deteriorates into name calling and stupid threats. I've never seen a discussion about music that didn't involve the aforementioned few that had any semblance of intelligence.

what's the to an extent part about beside my name ? never once have i gone along with the masses because that's what everyone else is agreeing to. if i've got an opinion, ill voice it. regardless of how many insults will result from it. but i do agree with you, there are to many people here afraid to voice their opinion so it can be heard.

i just don't know what to do to make you guy's happy. he was banned. i realized i shouldn't have done it after all the good points you all brought up. so what do you want me to do ? if unbanning him will stop every single person writing the same thing, " I don't think he should have been banned ", then i'll unban him. let me know. what do YOU want.

so then the real problem at hand is that you cant make a decison and stick to it. you dont have any convictions whatsoever. you told me that you would not ban someone becuase there was NO REASON to do so. but then i come back online and theyre gone? next time youre goign to do soemthing stupid like that dont bother telling me becuase youre only going to change your mind.

but yes, expressing opinions was also the problem. if there was someone who had just joined and was the opposite, saying that pop punk and that mall emo crap was awesome and was at the same time telling everyone that hardcore sucked, nobody really would have a cared. a few people would have said he was a jackass, but soon enough it would have turned into another brand new thread. the problem was that you disagreed with his opinion. how the hell can people get into new kinds of music if you ban people all the time that have different tastes? im not saying that the way he went about posting was necessarily the best way to do things, but it wasnt so bad that he should have been banned.

It really hurts to agree with Cole, but it happens now and then. Brandon, I never think that physical threats here are appropriate. I just think, that as a mod, you need to try to act objectively. I've seen many times when a new person arrived and some people didn't like them and asked a mod to ban. Why ban him? Because the older members were flaming him and he fought back? That's really weak. You have to remember that there are lots of members of this board. A few ims from people who were involved in the flame shouldn't be enough to ban him. If that were the case, lots of people would have been out of here a long time ago.

But, let's not get all crazy. When it comes down to it, this was just a gripe of mine. I don't think that we turned away the savior of the board, just that we acted like pricks. I'm glad that this thread has given people the opportunity to air some grievances. The easiest way for those of us unhappy with the board to improve it is to make our own threads about what interests us.

Steph, I did see your defense of that kid in the thread. I meant to give you credit but forgot.

I would also like to add that I think that Brandon has done a fairly good job, he's just quick on the trigger sometimes.

I understand what you're saying completely. It's just, can a person not have an opinion on something and then change it after because they realized they were wrong in the first place, or had made a bad decision. in all seriousness, it really doesn't matter to me if people here like me or not. if i have an opinion on something, ill voice it. at the beginning my opinon of the guy i banned was that he was an idiot. so i banned him. and then my opinon changed. but seeing i actually went to the lenghts to ban this guy, how can you say im not sure of myself ? i mean, i just realized the wrong in what i had done. nothing more than that. i don't agree with you here. and im aware it's your opinion. if people here didn't like me. that wouldn't make a difference to me. id still come here regularly and post as much as i do. other people's opinions of me don't matter. i don't agree with the masses or voice my opinion so that i will be liked, i do it because it's my opinion and i want it to be heard. up until this point, people have agreed with me as far as i can see. well maybe, maybe not.

That made me feel bad and I don't really know why. I guess it was because I have always repsected you..you were one of the only people to stand up for me and one of the first people to befriend me. And hearing that from you kinda sucks for me...and I don't want people to feel differently about me, I was just acting like a smart-ass

but anyways...

I think that lately alot of people on here have been really edgey and short tempered with each and I don't really know why. Everyone should just be on here having a good time..not worrying about everything thats done. It is just a message board...

i just think, that all the people on this forum need to lighten up and look on the bright side of everything and have fun here. no more fighting, or controversay or anything. don't get me wrong, myself included.

That wasn't targeted to you only Greg don't worry...it was just to everyone who's been arguing.

When I joined(which was not that long ago) everyone got along pretty well(apart from the girls hating me for a while) and everyone would joke around and we'd have great as punk as gc chats. But now it seems like everyone is getting on each others nerves...and I just want the board to be fun like it used to be. And not have pointless arguments.

Welcome to the club. You'll have less money and nothing to show for it but an extreme case of cirrhosis.

Speaking of dirty sluts, heres a story.

So some friends and I take a random road trip to the city one weekend. 6 of us rent one hotel room, we spend the night (and all of our cash) at a strip club, and then stumble back. Only one of the guys was so fortunate to get brought home by a girl, so the rest of my pals are thinking up schemes to get laid (not me of course, I'm the responsible one). So they start looking up "escort" services in the phonebook. After a few phone calls, they realize that even though there are 5 of us, we really don't have enough money for a decent hooker, so they start calling a few of the seedier places, until finally they call a place called "Budget Escort" (which incidentally turns out to be unaffordable for my fine friends of discerning taste).

At this point I feel the need to rehash the situation for them
- 5 guys, 1 hotel room, looking for the cheapest hooker money can buy

There's my story. Yeah, let's go get wasted Devin, but no budget hookers.
