View Full Version : Fall Out Boy - Patrick Stump

I need to start by saying I'm sure the metal community has brought sickness to brutal new heights this year. I'll leave that to Trohman though.

Tom Waits: Orphans
On his worst day (and a man this prolific has probably documented it) Tom Waits is still our greatest living American songwriter. His records are a consistent rite of passage for indie rockers and people who generally want to sound intelligent (is it working?). Ignore the hype, close the blinds, and enjoy the gift that Tom Waits has for expressing all facets of the human experience using only a junkyard and some imagination.

Jay Z: Kingdom Come
So there I am in Sony Studios with Jay, Beyonce, LA Reid, Young Guru, and Bleek thinking to myself that A) I'm whiter and nerdier than anything Weird Al can come up with B) What am I doing here, and C) This is the best fucking record I've heard in a long time. Two words: Just Blaze. I'm telling you, that's the future. Most under-rated producer alive. Kanye and John Legend. So good it's disgusting. Jay? Duh.

Justin Timberlake: Futuresex/lovesounds
It's easy to forget that this is a Timberlake record as Timbaland is so prominent and effective. But JT holds up. He sings circles around just about every other dude that's not Nat King Cole or Stevie Wonder and he even adds a little Bowie/Eno Berlin feeling to the R&B funk which is pretty much my taste to a T.

My Chemical Romance: The Black Parade
I was living with Bob Bryer at the Oakwood apartments in Burbank while My Chem was recording this and FOB was recording Infinity on High. We had a barbecue on the 4th of July, bought as many inflatable cactuses as we could find, and watched Grizzly Man. When I moved out I left a hell of a mess. Sorry Bob. Neat freak. Memories. PS, Ray Toro is a shredder.

Gnarls Barkley: St. Elsewhere
I'm sure this record is going to get name checked enough, so I'll just say this: Cee-Lo has been making astounding use of his astounding voice since Goodie Mob (and his brilliant solo records) and it's high time that he got the attention he deserved.

John Mayer: Continuum
Mayer is single handedly making the Stratocaster cool again cause he can actually play the thing. And I mean PLAY. I also think his voice is an underestimated weapon. Kinda reminds me of a funny Van Morrison.

Christina Aguilera: Back To Basics
Probably the most capable vocalist I've ever had the luxury of seeing live. Holy shit. Should be noted too that production by Premier and Mark Ronson are pretty sick too.

The Who: Wire & Glass
I haven't had time to really sit with the new album "Endless Wire" so I'll just say that this 6 song mini opera is better than the last two Who albums combined...and every band who've ever emulated the Who (excepting Green Day).

Nelly Furtado: Loose
So Timbaland's back again. Huge. He hasn't done a lot of straight hip hop this year and I think it's taking it's toll on the genre. If Lil Wayne isn't on it and it's hip hop, it probably sucked this year. Instead, Timbo lent his genius to the worthy pipes of the suddenly funky Furtado on her third record that totally ditches the folky stuff. She actually brought the sexy back. I have no idea what "No hay Igual" means.

Beyonce: B Day
I know that movie Deja Vu isn't out yet but I'm already sure the song of the same name is gonna overshadow the shit out of it.

Very diverse - and it's interesting to see where his musical tastes come from and how they may impact his band.

I love seeing an artist who appreciates production and vocal skills in his or her taste in music. I'm sure FOB will be in the tops of my 2007 list, and it will probably be attributed to Patrick's amazing vocals.

Eh, nah, I had similar artists on my list. I just think it's interesting to see what Pat's into - and then see how it obviously influences his singing and production.

Yay and nay. I like that he recognizes talent and isn't afraid to put Beyonce and Christina Aguilera on his list; at the same time I wish he would have put some lesser knowns down. I'm not even that surprised since I know he sways a lot toward R&B but a good list nonetheless!

thats because he isn't in a pop punk band, he is in a pop band.

EXACTLY what my response was about to be. awesome.

And, I don't really this this is a very diverse list either..those are all pop artists. aside from MyChem..who aren't artists at all. And who the hell enjoys Christina Aguilara?

"If Lil Wayne isn't on it and it's hip hop, it probably sucked this year."

Obviously this man has not heard of the Clipse or T.I.

That statement actually makes me mad. ha

yuck...good call on mayer & waits but the rest is just bleh.

vanillacoustic
12/21/06, 01:28 PM
i love that patrick can appreciate amazing voices (xtina, beyonce, etc.) - obviously that comes from being a kickass vocalist himself. and i also love how he can appreciate a good melody, a catchy line, a hook...instead of just jumping on whatever indier-than-thou bandwagon everyone else is for their "Best Of" lists. sure, he named some things that i haven't heard and some that i don't agree with, but hey, taste is taste. and i respect that.

it's BASHING that i can't stand. it's when people totally discount something without listening. REALLY listening. some people will think i'm absolutely nuts because i can not STAND gnarles barkley. i TRIED. i really really tried. but just...no. whatever doesn't bore me on that CD, annoys me. and john mayer? oh how i used to love that boy...but for me, he lost it for the most part after the "room for squares" CD. i wanted to throw things at the TV when he won the grammy for "daughters".

but when people automatically discount such-and-such band because they're in whatever "scene" or they are "pop" or they "sold out"...that bothers me more than anything. the only reason you should not like such-and-such band is because you don't like the way their MUSIC sounds. but how many posts do you read on these forums that have comments like, "oh it's so funny how many people are jumping on the 'let's hate on taking back sunday' band wagon now" (feel free to replace taking back sunday with FOB or whatever band is currently getting bashed). i can't stand that shit. music elitists. as i always say, "music snobs can rot in hell". :-p

now i have to think of MY "Best Of" list. to kill some time until the end of the work day. and then i'll head over to karaoke night, where i plan to sing "all i want for christmas is you" by mariah, "i'm not OK" by MCR, and "at last" by etta james. or "mad about you" by belinda carlisle. depends on what sorta mood i'm in, and how much time there is. but the first 2 song i'm DEFINITELY singing.

/end rant that either a) no one will read or b) people will get annoyed with because it's so f'n long.

Cool list, very diverse.

12/21/06, 01:41 PM
How is this diverse again? With the exception of Tom Waits this is exactly what you would hear listening to a top 40 station for an hour. No wonder the new songs blow.

I pretty much love him for how "random" this list is.

12/21/06, 02:08 PM
I like the list a lot. It's not really something you'd expect coming from the vocalist of a (**cough**amazing**cough**)pop punk band. Though the list itself isn't really "diverse," it's a good list nonetheless. Christina Aguilara? Hell yes!;-)

12/21/06, 03:37 PM
vanillacoustic, i agree with you for the most part

he has some amazing singers on his list.
and certainly, it influences fall out boy.

Take Pete who has background in bands like Arma Angelus and then mix in Patrick's musical tastes which include Stevie Wonder. No wonder I love this band.

i was surprised by the christina and beyonce picks, just because most people wouldn't even think to put them on their top picks list, not too mention put both women on their lists. i'm not discounting either--i just haven't sat down and objectively listened to either to really give my opinion. (all i know about beyonce's is her performance of sound the alarm at the vma's. uh. i don't get out much?) i do know vocally christina is always amazing and her style choices can't be beat.

i'm not sure how i feel about nelly, but i can see his point from his perspective.

he's incredibly articulate, which i think i'm most surprised by, to be perfectly honest. usually you see musicians write the same "sweet hooks sweet bros" for every album; patrick's a great reviewer.

tom waits, the who, jay-z: i'd like to formally invited patrick stump to hang out with me any time and listen to music. hi.

john mayer's new album convinced me he finally stopped dicking around and starting putting out his potential. (i still hate "daughters." good lord, what sort of single dude his age writes a song about that? i always feel more masculine than mayer whenever it comes on the radio and i'm an incredibly prissy girl who cries when she listens to harry chapin's "cat's in the cradle."plus, the song is boring. man, i'm about to get a rage blackout just thinking about it.) i digress. i knew mayer was killer when he was a nobody when i was a wee college freshman--now i'm about to graduate five years later (shut up) and he's had his ups and downs, but i can finally say it's not too shabby. props, patrick. i agree.

god, why am i providing commentary to patrick stump's commentary? this is lame. i talk about music too much.

i would want to know what he would have to say about himself if he were looking at patrick of fall out boy and not patrick the short white nerdy guy. lol. He would totally be at the top of his list.
