Iggy Pop didn't start punk rock. No one person or band did. Like any other genre it was developed by many people over a period of time. Iggy Pop was definetly influetial, but so were the velvelt undergorund, MC5, The New York Dolls, Elvis Costello, Etc. Its niave to give any one person or band credit for it.

If you're talking about where the music came from, then Zach is more or less right. It was initially the work of arty speed freaks the Velvet Underground. Then you had you're white wannabe radicals in the MC5, who helped the Stooges get off the ground. Iggy really was the central figure of the scene and basically considered a god by everyone on both sides of the ocean. Yeah, the New York Dolls and some others also figure in, I'm just giving a sketch of what led up to punk as everyone knows it.

But, as far as the word 'punk,' that distinction goes to the Dictators. Basically, Legs McNeil and his friends idolized the band's juvenile lifestyle and started a zine because of it. Legs gave it the name "Punk," which happens to be a guy who takes it in the ass. Anyway, the word caught on.

All of this and more fun information in Legs' book "Please Kill Me." Read you illiterate tools.

I could do that, but no one here could actually read it. Except for Colin, because he's my other half. No, seriously, he's my split personality. Or I'm his. I forget how this works.
