Is anyboy else out there deeply disturbed by that song? It's on the new Brand New cd. Go read the lyrics. That is really not cool.
im not really diturbed by it. i think its about how alot of people are today in society or it's a personal song about himself. like deep down that's how he feels. it's kinda dark and wrong but thats alot fo society is like and maybe how jesse is at times.

i like that song.
that song is exactly how all us guys act. jesse's just smart enough to realize what he's(we're) doing. compare it to sic transit gloria, when he himself is taken advantage of. its a good lesson in innocence vs. experience.

yea not all guys are like that though. but yea sic transit kinda shows the opposite of this song. like me vs... is the guy being the experienced, and sic transit.... is the girl being experienced. i really like them. in fact i like the whole new album.

??? Does "experience" mean to imply that when you are burned that badly, you have to join society and make an even bigger pile of shit out of what we've already got?
Anyway, not all guys "act" like that.....or maybe I should've said "are" like that because thats pretty much all Jesse is now....one big act. I mean, I used to love Brand New, but that is just a disgusting thing to put down on paper, much less record and then play live.

Its making a point that there is something to be said in all instances of sex where drinking and seduction and lack of "experience" all play a part in. Its saying that men can and will do whatever it takes to get their way especially under the influence of alcohol or drugs or whatever. Sic transit is basically the direct opposite but both songs stillmake good points about how people act when faced with such situations.
Agreed, I think you're right, First of all Jessie isnt that much of an asshole to really BELIEVE those words, just maybe thinks like that sometimes, we ALL do, (and dont say you dont cause there is alittle evil in us all) Just like Daryl from Glassjaw, he got so much crap for the lyrics in "Everything you wanted to know about Silence" speaking violently like "If I cant have you no one will" and using harsh words towards women as well..its not much of as they truly believe and mean everything litteraly then maybe a feeling they have gotten before or speaking metaphoricaly. If you hate Brand New for one song, which is a damn good song by the way, then thats just sad. Just dont listen to the damn song.
im a chick and feel no offence to that song. the song rocks as does Brand New. You cant take stuff like that so literal. Look under the lyrics
theres nothing wrong with the song. he was expressing maybe how he felt at the moment. i've done that. i wrote a song about how much i hate someone and that i was going to kill them. but thats not true. it was just one bad night. maybe this is the same sort of thing. im not sure. you'd have to ask jesse. i love this song. deep down i can relate. every guy out there can. and im sure every girl can relate to sic transit in the same way. society is pretty bad and if you're suprised by songs like these you needd to get otu more and see the world.

def one of my favorite songs, yeah the lyrics are a bit disturbing but they are some damn good lyrics
your using all your looks that you've thrown from the start
if you let me have my way i swear ill tear you apart
cuz its all, you can be, youre a drunk, and your scared
its ladies night, all the girls drink for free
i will lie awake
lie for fun and fake the way i hold you
let you fall for every empty word i say

this song is my favorite one on the whole cd. i can't stop listening to it. as a matter of fact, it is on right now. and, i agree with whoever said that you can't take the lyrics all literally. it's possible that it could be from experience, but it's beautifully written, and jesse has a way with words. i love it. best song.
God forbid our dear Jesse write a song about drinking and womanizing. Fuck you if you judge an artist by the content of their art.
Wow, I didn't really mean to put Jesse on a pedestal, but seriously, it's just a song.

i think you;re right about me vs... but i see sic transit... as a little more.
sic transit=sng about a boy who has sex with a girl. it all sounds planned out cause he had talked to his friends about it. he almost not willing. he only wants to hold her but she forces herself on him.
i dunno or something. i love both songs.

"he is a lamb. she is the slaughter. she's moving way too fast and all he wanted was to hold her."
that pretty much supports what you're trying to say about her forcing herself onto him.

Hey...if you all want to look at it that way...then go ahead. I just think you're being really naive. Jesse meant just what he said, or he wouldn't still be playing the song. I don't believe that this has anything to do with "being caught up in the moment" or something like that. I can understand writing really wierd stuff...done it myself....or even violent when you are angry (come on, i absolutely love STD) but you don't continue to play it. And at this point I've met BN, as well as so many other bands, so many times, that I just can't overlook who some of the people in the band are and still enjoy the music. It completely sours it for me....which really sucks, because I used to be a HUGE fan of Brand New.
And by the way -- to "devin" -- if I'm not supposed to judge art by it's content, what the hell else am I supposed to judge it by? And while it may be "just a song" to you, it wouldn't seem like it is to him, given his emotional antics onstage.
if he feels that way at least he has the balls to admit it. cause if its true you know tons of girls will hate him for this song. oh well whatever. like i sadi earlier. you'd have to ask jesse for the real meaning.
just because you've met a band doesn't mean that you "know" them, so it's unfair to judge the music based on your view of it's maker's "personality" that you got a peek of for maybe five minutes.

Dude...I think you missed the point. What I am saying is, I've met them, and they were cool, and so it makes me like the music even more. Then, they write a song like that, and record it, and play it live, and it makes me think less of them as human beings. I mean, how could anyone be so callous to other people, especially when they are in a position like that to take advantage of innocent people?

alright, i understand you now, and i guess you have the right to judge them however you want. but in my opinion, i won't think any more or less of the band until i know what he was thinking while writing the song.

Jesus the man is a human being. I know I have been in situations where Ive been talking to a girl whose maybe had a few more drinks than she should have, and I see the opportunity to get with her. And I felt many of those same thoughts Jesse expressed in the song as well. I knew I didnt want anything more from this girl than just a fling...but I went for it anyway. I lied my face off to get what I wanted...maybe it wasnt right but that's what people do sometimes. If your gonna hate a band for writing a song about something that occurs naturally with the average man then your being a bit foolish.
As for my interpretation of "Sic Transit..". I think it's about a boy losing his virginity to an older girl. Its an awkward moment when you lose it and it doesnt happen quite the way you wished it had. The girl has far less of an emotional problem with the situation because she has already experienced it....

thank you for pointing this out. i think a key point missed is that the male in this song (let's call him "jesse") is also pretty drunk. the songs begins, and i quote:
"with one or two, i get used to the room. we go slow when we first make our moves. by five or six, bring you out to the car. number 9, with my head on the bar."
see that? "jesse" drank 9 drinks himself. that's enough to affect someone pretty heavily.
i also direct you to the second verse:
"your eyes are fighting sleep, while your mouth makes your demands. you laugh at every word trying hard to be cute."
the fact that her "mouth makes... demands" shows that she is, in fact, consentual.
this song is not about rape. rape involves sex that is nonconsentual. yes, the girl is drunk. yes, the guy has sex with her... while he is also drunk. both of their respective judgements were clouded. "jesse" made a poor decision, but the song does not imply that he is proud of what he did. if anything, he feels ashamed of it.
finally, if someone doesn't like brand new because of this song, they don't have enough sense to truly appreciate brand new anyway.

whatever you think about the song, it cannot be accurate, because you only have half the picture, and it is a blurred picture at best. personally, i love this song. i know exactly where he's coming from.
how can you say brandnew is "just an act" when jesse lacey actually had the guts to tell the truth in this song, to reveal this little bit aboutt he side of human nature that everyone is aware of but no one talks about. brandnew isn't some pop band in which only happy thoughts exist. people are capable of dispicable things, and everyone does them. if you can't respect an artist for telling the truth, you need to not listen to music then.
get the hell off your soap-box and appreciate an artist for being real and not some fake little package that looks pretty for your eyes.

Okay, whatever you want to think. But lets please not commend people for admitting to doing something horrible. I mean, you're not SUPPOSED to do things like that. And plus, so that maybe you all will stop saying that I don't know Jesse, I've got a pretty clear picture. A friend of mine that I would definitely trust used to be in really close contact with Jesse. Then some shit happened, and I'm not going to go into it because it would betray a trust. Lets just say it was crappy. So, you can stuff it on that one. The guys in the band know who I am.
P.S.--I wasn't implying that I am better than anyone else. I'm saying that I am better than someone who would do something like that, just by the virtue of the fact that I wouldn't.

So with that, how do you know Jesse actually did what he talks of in the song? He's just telling a story, and for all we know, its a fictional one that he got an idea from watching a movie or soemthing like that.
