View Full Version : i'm worried about my friend

a very close friend of mine called me the other day asking for advice. she's been overweight for the majority of her life and after trying numerous different ways to lose weight, her doctor suggested surgery. apparently she went to a surgeon the other day to discuss her options and she has to choose between gastric bypass or a lap-band thing. She told me that she's leaning towards the gastric bypass, but wasn't sure what decision she should make. from what I've read/heard, it's a very risky and dangerous surgery, more so than if she went with the lapband. i'm really concerned about her and the impact it might have on her life, but she seems to think that the lap-band wouldn't work. does anybody know anything about either surgery, to either help me have a little more ease of mind about it or so that i can call her back and talk to her more about it and possibly convince her not to have the riskier surgery?

Well, my moms friend had a gastric bypass a while ago, maybe 3 years, and everything worked out just fine.

I know that gastric bypasses work, but they're also very risky surgeries (they re-route your intestines and pretty much change your whole internal digestive system) and the risk of infection/something going wrong during surgery is much greater than the other surgery. I really want my friend to be happy with the end result, but I also want her to be ALIVE and healthy to enjoy it. She'd have to take a lot of vitamins for the rest of her life if she had the gastric bypass and it limits a lot of the normal foods she'd be able to eat. It would also complicate things if she ever decided to try to get pregnant in the future. I know the other surgery has risks too, but they don't seem as severe to me. I just dont want my friend to rush into something without being totally informed or unsure of what she really wants/whats best for her. I guess I'm just really scared/nervous for her since this is a pretty big deal.

Obviously if the topic of surgery is coming up from her doctor, it's kind of a sign that something needs to be done because medically she is not healthy and is risking her life as it is. Any surgery is dangerous, but gastric bypass is becoming more and more common and is often performed. It's not like exploration brain surgery, haha. If she does her research and comes up with the Pros and Cons she can make her decision. The only real way to do it is to make an educated decision, that's what you have to convince her of.
well im not sure the surgery will be bad, but the after affects, she might have to change what she eats, basically dont eat what she ate to get fat, binge, etc etc. she needs to keep that new post surgery body in better condition than her old one, so she needs to be active and change her life, basically a 2nd chance at starting fresh, if she continues to be lazy and be like im cool with my new skinnier self and eat whatever and not take care of herself, yes, than you might see some crazy side effects. im no doctor but the whole purpose of that surgery is to not get fat again, so if you let yourself, there could be problems, good luck to your friend though, hope things work out for the best.
my mom had brain surgery 5 years ago, chance of survival by the doctors was 75%, still scary to think about that other 25%, shes fine now, goes for her yearly MRI's etc etc, on medication for the rest of her life, that's life i guess though.

I think that the lap band would be the better option, IMO. With the lap band, they can adjust it a bit to suit your needs. People tend to not lose weight as fast with the lap band, but if they get it too tight, they can adjust it. With the regular surgery, if they make the stomach too small, you're pretty much screwed as far as I can tell. I work at a hospital (used to work in ICU). I've seen alot of these surgeries go wrong, and I've seen alot of what can happen if you don't take care of yourself once you've had the surgery. I know alot of people who have had both the surgery and the lap band. From what I've seen, about half the people do well with it, and about half the people do poorly. Anyone who decides to have it done has GOT to do what they are told, and take the appropriate vitamins and so forth. I know I am not a good pill taker, and never take meds of any kind like I'm supposed to. I also tend to get lax with lifestyle changes and such. I know I'm not the only one. Alot of people gain their weight back too, after some time. Whatever she decides to do, I wish her luck.

you're assuming that she's fat because she overeats---and I can "testify" for her that she isn't. I've watched her eat when we go out--she orders healthy food like salads etc and eats normal portions, I actually think I eat more than her and I'm not overweight. Last summer we joined a gym together so I know she works out. I guess some people just can't lose weight--like some people that can't gain weight. I really feel bad for her because I know she's worked really hard to lose weight and it seems like surgery is her only option at this point. I was shocked when she told me how much she weighs, I didn't think she looked like it was that much.
All I'm saying is that you shouldn't always assume that someone is overweight because they're lazy or they overeat.

I just asked my Mom for advice for you, shes a surgeon. She said this ..
"It's a risky operation yes, but if she finds the right doctor, that has done it enough times, you shouldn't be that worried"
It is an incredibly risky surgery and you should be worried for her, but also think about all the things that will come from this. I've seen picture of before and after and after a couple of months their looking from being a size 14 in girljeans to a size 10.
It's something that will save their life
if they don't find an option
they will die from either surgery
or
obesity
what would you do?
thats the question you should ask yourself to find the real answer

I agree with you that she should have something done so that she doesn't die from health complications of being overweight, it just that I think she should go with the safer less invasive surgery (the lapband.)

Not to sound like a dick...but I've lost sixty pounds since the beginning of the year...with exercise and dieting. Nowadays everyone is rushing into surgeries and other things to fuel weight loss, but so few people are willing to do it the "old fashioned way".
It's an option, and it's a good one.
If not, anal is the way to go.

Neither can I. That'll probably change in a few years though I imagine.

tell her not to get the surgery being fat is like living in a bullet proof cocoon it will keep her warm in harsh winter conditions and will always be very cozy suspended in her own lipids

That's a pretty douchey thing to say. I know people who eat nonstop and are still in excellent shape without working out. Before I started working out, it's not like I was eating fast food, I just don't have a very active metabolism. Sure, there are some fat people who eat fast food all the time and just have no regard for their health (granted, with the amount I drink I'm not one to talk down to them), but to look down on people because they don't care what they look like, that's pretty shitty.
I also don't know any fat people who want thin people to feel sorry for them. I just think you're a dumbfuck.
