I haven't seen these guys get any love in a while. Do people here still like them?
What are your thoughts on:
1. the way the story is coming out in the comics etc
2. the loss of members to the band
3. how the new album will be
4. previous albums

I don't care for them. It is painful for me to listen to them and I don't pay nearly enough attention to the story for it to matter.

uhm, well.
1. i think the comics are doing a terrible job of telling the story. they don't really make anything that much easier to understand and i always feel like somethin is left out. i usually re-read them a couple times before i fully understand what's going on and am usually dissapointed, although the art for good apollo was good.
2. i think that the loss of the members suck and will change a big part of coheed because they worked as a group for so long. but i don't neccesarily think it will be bad, i think the new album will have a possibly different style to them, or if not different, atleast the new memebers will put in their different influences into the music and make interesting results.
3. i basically said my idea for 3 in 2. but i think it will not be as dark as the last one. hoepfully it will be epic though, this story needs an "epic" ending.
4. my favorite is IKSOSE:3 and always will be because that's what got me into the band. i liked SSTB but IKSOSE:3 really caught my attention and got me to listen to them and has influenced the way i write music greatly.

i like the comics but I feel they definetly leave alot out and I cant help but feel like its a money making gimmick. Also, as for the loss of members, I don't really mind, claudio is what coheed will always be anyway. The new album will probably blow all our minds in classic coheed fashion and I expect it to be better than IV, and i fucking loved IV

I don't care if the dude had a mohawk or an afro or whatever, the music is just awful and his vocals make it ten times worse. I'll admit Second Stage Turbine wasn't half bad, but everything after was just pseudo-prog-pop wankery.
And yes, Deep Inside is awesome after bong rip(s).

Coheed is an amazing band, especially live. Claudio and Travis both have insane talent and its sad that they get overlooked sometimes. The new album should be as good as the last 3 so I'm not worried. I might be biased though, I do have a keywork tattoo =)

i'm pretty on the fence about these guys. i've only checked their first two albums & some songs i really enjoy & others i'm not so big on. some of the lyrics put me off a wee bit at times
The whole sci-fi storyline is really lame.

This is one of those bands that I like.. but I have to listen to in moderation .. his voice gets to be too much after awhile... and the whole story thing is pretty lame..

What are your thoughts on:
1. the way the story is coming out in the comics etc
2. the loss of members to the band
3. how the new album will be
4. previous albums
1. i don't really follow the story much, and i havent seen the comics. i know a bit about the story as in who the characters are and things like that but as i said i don't follow it too much.
2. i was quite shocked, kinda glad they got their bassist back though. i can't imagine who the drummer will be, but i would be interested to hear how chris pennie fills it out, if he is indeed filling the spot
3. i really don't know. i think even more rock influence than the last album. i can't see me enjoying it much, but i'll always give it a chance
4. silent earth: 3 is better than second stage, it is more consistent. every track on silen earth is amazing, where as on second stage theres about 4 tracks that are amazing. the latest album is fairly consistent, but only one or two stand out tracks on there.

I'm wondering if it's going to be any different with the drummer from dillinger, the live show mostly, i'm not sure if he's doing any of the recording. I'm glad the bassist rejoined. I love how everyone in coheed are actually talented musicians that obviously know theory and the mechanics to write great songs, which might be why they've been such a big success.

i don't, i love that song.
And please please please tell me it makes more sense than the first two SSTB comics and the Good Apollo GN?
haha you're outta luck dude, it's even more confusing.
What are your thoughts on:
1. the way the story is coming out in the comics etc
2. the loss of members to the band
3. how the new album will be
4. previous albums
1. I can really get into the storyline but the comics do make it very confusing when it's easier to understand in Claudio's lyrics.
2. I was bummed when I heard Mike and Josh left, Mike being a great bassist and I'm glad he came back and Josh because he was the link between Co & Ca and 3. I think bringing Chris Pennie in to play drums on the album was a great decision on the band's part.
3. I think it's gonna be real riff-heavy and have a lot of emphasis on Claudio's vocals. The reason I say this is because of Nick Raskulinecz and the stuff he's produced lately (Rush, Shadows Fall) kind of falls into those catagories. Can't wait to see how the storyline turns out.
4. IKSSE:3 is my favorite but I think The Second Stage Turbine Blade was their best and I can listen to both and never get tired of them. I can't say that about GAIBS4VOFFTTEOM, it didn't do as much for me, but I still thoroughly enjoy it.
What do you all think of the new song? I think it's pretty good. It took a while to get a feel for it.
I should be seeing them in Sept. (again) :)

well, someone may retort and say that they think alesana is an awful band and they don't like them all.
And not to be an asshole or anything, but I don't think too many people are going to disagree.
He was trying to say that you are one to talk about music being awful when you yourself listen to bands much more maligned than Coheed and Cambria.
While I don't necessarily agree with this tactic, I'd say he knocked down the legitimacy of your argument a few steps in the eyes of most reading the thread.

Contrary to many people thinking that IKSOSE:3 is their best album, i believe second stage turbine to be there best. Mostly due to everything evil, dilirium trigger, devil in jersey city, etc..
for me, coheed took me a really long time to get into. One of my friends was a coheed nut, and knew everything about the story behind the albums. Once i knew what was going on, their songs made a lot more sense and i really started to get into them. They became one of my favorite bands.
A heads up for people in the LA area.

Contrary to many people thinking that IKSOSE:3 is their best album, i believe second stage turbine to be there best. Mostly due to everything evil, dilirium trigger, devil in jersey city, etc..

So I just got my no world for tomorrow preorder and what the hell...fucking cheap ass bastards...the cd packaging is nothing more than a cardboard slip case the same thickness as a promo cd with absolutely no inserts. I probably would not have preordered this if I knew I was getting crap for packing/artwork and no lyric sheet. This is just a testament to how record labels are failing to make people want to buy actual cds. Maybe they are giving up.
Their name is either the most clever strategy as of late or one of the worst. I refuse to listen to them because "Coheed & Cambria" sounds too much like "Dolce & Gabbana" or some other god-awful handbag. I suppose this subconsciously increases their popularity with today's awful sub 20s.

theyre named after the characters from the story. and i think its a better name than "Shabutie" would have been.

I don't mean to seem mean or whatever, but you ordered the stripped version. They sold 3 versions... stripped (which is cheaper), deluxe (which comes with a dvd, lyrics booklet, all that jazz), and a vinyl... so yeah some people just like getting the cd nothing else.

I really don't understand all these coheed fans that are die hard sstb only fans. the album is pretty good, I mean time consumer, everything evil, delirium trigger, junesong, and godsend are all solid songs. but nothing on the album is as good as the crowing, light & the glass, 2113, the willing wells... I mean common. devil in jersey is a solid single. heartshot kid disaster is ok. 33 is ok. neverender is pretty good. but no songs like completely blow me away. everything evil is nice but I think it's overrated by alot of coheed fans. I mean don't get me wrong I love it, it's as good as no world for tomorrow, but ga1 and iks are just too good for it.

I can almost see that with the last two albums and between 'The Suffering' and 'Blood Red Summer', but overall the sound dramatically changed. I mean, if you look at Second Stage Turbine Blade vs. No World for Tomorrow, the difference is lid-flipping. I remember nerdy little soft-hearted indie-rock kids liked Second Stage Turbine Blade. I doubt that kind of audience is even remotely into what the band's doing now... except for me

Agreed both Good Apollo's were great. I just had a problem with some of the single choice's. I was never a The Suffering fan and I can't stand Feathers. They could have picked any other song on Good Apollo Vol. II but Feathers?

"Feathers" is one of those songs that I love but I feel like I shouldn't. When I first heard it I was like "Man, this is....lame but it's so damn catchy!" It eventually became stuck in my head for months. The video for it was kind of stupid though.
SickOfStars
01/06/09, 08:35 AM
The Running Free was the best choice for a single on that record, and they drained that option first. I mean, looking at the record, there weren't many other choices for singles. While the whole record is accessible, there weren't really a whole ton of songs with that "pop-rock single" feel to them besides feathers.
Same for Apollo I. They just tried to pick the safest stuff, really.
polarbearsummer
01/06/09, 09:21 PM
Yea, I guess when I think about you're right. They pick whats safe, and usually whats safe is my least favorite. I just thought maybe they could have went with No World Tomorrow or Mother Superior. Those weren't very pop-y tracks but I still think they'd be better choices than Feathers.
And yea, their videos always suck, except for Blood Red Summer. But who cares, they're coheed.

They originally released two issues of the second stage turbine blade which are out of print now. A graphic novel was made for GAIBSIV:Through the Eyes of Madness, which was the most confusing thing I've ever read, even with prior knowledge of what happens in that album. The album after this one is supposed to be the prequel to the story. I'm really excited to see how that one turns out, especially since Chris Pennie will be able to record the drums on that album, I really want to see what he can do for Coheed Musically.

Gotta agree with that, when Coheed put out SSTB and In Keeping Secrets you could call them a progressive rock band. With those albums they always seemed to be pushing the limits, and doing something different. Good Apollo I had its share of pop-y singles, but the rest of the album followed suit with the previous two, doing something different, keeping their own sound. NWFT, when compared to the previous three, doesn't give me that same feeling. It was just bland.
Also, anyone else feel like this tour with Slipknot is going to be a bad tour for them.

Yea man, if I'm gonna wait for a headlining tour. I've seen em a couple of times, and it goes without saying that the shows where they headlined were much better. Same. Unfortunately. Just not the same as the early days. Neverender helped that a little though.
Definitely agree. NWFT was really disappointing, but everything else they've done I still love.

yes they are. A few years back the dillinger escape plan opened for slipknot and the same thing happened.

Coheed is completely amazing live. I've seen them twice, once with Avenged Sevenfold and then last year with Linkin Park.
I can't imagine anyone booing their preformance, both times I saw them the crowds seemed really into it. Claudio puts on an awesome show.

NWFT just isn't very good.
It's Coheed, which means it's better than quite a bit, but I haven't listened to it ONCE since I got it except when I went track-by-track and explained the story to a friend, but even then I was like "This sucks."

What? No.
FFTTEOM is not as good as the first two, but it's still waaaaaaaaaay better than NWFT. NWFT is mostly filler and feels like a rushed ending to the story.
FFTTEOM is darker, true. However, the guitars are much better. The drums are better. The songwriting is less formulaic.
I feel that Coheed, at NWFT, was at a kind of rush to get this album out and they were forced into not writing the best songs they could.

Too say that NWFT is mostly filler compared to FFTTEOM is almost jokeable.
i agree that NWFT was a rush album, but if you read up on past interviews with claudio he stats that every album but FFTTEOM was a rush album. they took WAYYYYY to long on those songs. i read in an interview that in making FFTTEOM they would write the song, then go back and do a step by step tweak job. they never did that with any other album.

Songs that don't need to be on NWFT:
Feathers
Gravemakers
Fall Of House Atlantic
Radio Bye Bye
most of On The Brink, considering it's exactly like WW4 with "Hail!"s.

i agree with Feathers and On the Brink but the others should stay.
songs that didnt need to be on FFTTEOM:
All The Willing Well's...god,they were just bad..i was very disappointed in coheed for recording those songs. No last value whatsoever. Another thing i love about coheed that made me upset with NWFT and FFTTEOM were the last songs..they are suppose to be amazing and very epic and The Final Cut and On The Brink were major flops.

I am so excited for that box set to come out, especially as you said to see SSTB and IKSOSE3, since they are my two favorite albums, and (IMO) the best two they've done. It also seems like they put a lot of work into rehearsing for it too, which is cool since it means they weren't just throwing together this as a huge publicity stunt.

I dont think any of the albums can be classified as bad coheed albums. I personally like the albums in order of release, starting with sstb. The band evolved from a small progressive band on an indie label to a alternative rock powerhouse on a major label with a widespread audience. The sound on the albums fits accordingly.

Oh yeah the comics rock. I just need the final issue of the Second Stage and I've got em all (for now at least since I'm hoping they make more). And that whole thing was weird. The FFTTEOM comic was so ridiculous it took me three reads through to actually fully understand it. But they are so awesome.

I agree with this, and a lot of people don't like their last two, but FFTTEOM was a real turning point in the storyline, so while it may not be wholly appreciated, it is a necessity. And also, I feel like even though they have changed their style a bit, it wasn't to become more commercially successful, which I greatly respect.
So many people hate them that I almost get embarrassed saying that they're one of my favs=) I love them but think the comics kind confuse me more then anything...IV foeva!
The comics are so awesome, albeit confusing (as I mentioned before). I would never be ashamed to say that I like them. They're easily one of my top bands, and I have, and will continue to defend them to the death.
