i gotta go with Texas beating USC in the Rose Bowl, even though I hate Texas. That was the greatest college football game I've ever seen.
Kobe's 81 would be 2nd. That was an amazing feat.
Duke lacrosse rape scandal 3rd.

George Mason FTW!

yeah a 2 loss college football team really desreves to be nominated for story of the year...

wheres rutgers?
rutgers finishing 2nd in the Big East wasnt one of the top 10 stories, I'm sorry lol.
it was a good story, but I think the Tigers making the World Series was a bigger deal and that didnt even make the list.

I went with Kirby Puckett's death. I loved the guy, it made me very very sad for days when I heard he had died.
Kobe scores 81 would be my 2nd.
Texas def. USC would be 3rd.

World Cup only happens every 4 years. Easily the biggest story since the whole world cares about it, whereas only America, or even small portions of America cares about any of the rest of that shit.
Except the Tour De France, who no one cares about.

World Cup, followed closely by the Rose Bowl

Please. If you wanted to go for the "feel good story football team" it'd be the saints everyday of the week. Rutgers isn't even a top 20 story this year, IMO.

For me personally, i said Kirby Puckett's death. But world wide the World Cup.

gotta agree with leftwide...that was the best game i have ever seen. that would be my number 1 followed by italy winning the world cup and kirby pucketts death.

12/12/06, 07:22 PM
i was tempted to say the world cup because of the combination of being here in the north end (which is basically little sicily) and the whole zidane drama ..but i dont know. i think the world cup, as a whole, was underwhelming this time around. there were no underdog teams there in the end and none of the games leading up to the final were that entertaining. plus the insane amount of yellow and red cards given out ruined it for me, to an extent.
amazing final though.

i went with the cup because A)it is the biggest sports story whenever it happens and B) it's the only one that made me happy.

Personal Favorite: Steelers winning the SB (Obvious one there)
If any other team won the SB then I would say Kobe's 81. Really, in my opinion, that's one of the biggest games by anyone in any sport, period. I don't see how you cannot be amazed by that. And I also think that it's bigger than Wilt's 100. Wilt couldn't do that today.

In polls like this, people usually go with what is freshest on their minds, but I think if we were in the middle of March Madness and George Mason went on that run right now, they would be up top. People forget how absurd that was.

why do you hate texas?
i mostly hate texas for their culture and politics. it just carries over to sports.
that goes for the majority of the south though. i'm just arrogant in the fact that i think the northern and western cultures in this country are the most sensible. i think the south is crazy, to generalize.

That was this year, though. Back in like, February.

I think the best part is that he was the team manager and the coach let him put a jersey on, because I THINK he was a senior. I could be wrong about the senior part, but I know he was just the team manager

i went with TO mainly because of the shock factor, with his ego and the way he looks up to himself, i never really saw it coming at all
2nd would be Kirby, i grew up watching him and it was sad to see him go
and 3rd
Italy winning the World Cup, just because i remember so much going on, i was living in hollywood at the time and there were so many caars just driving everywhere with people waving flags and screaming and it was insane for like 3 or 4 days

Word.
People are so American centered. The world could care less about all those other stories, the World Cup is the championship to end all championships for the most popular sport in the world.
Personally though, Kirby Puckett's death was horrible. He was one of my favorites as a kid.

the fact that the world only cares about soccer shouldnt matter. consider this a culturally-based poll. the world cup final is up here because it was an amazing game, regardless of how big the game of soccer is in America compared to other countries.

anyways, I say george mason. march madness was unbeliebvable this year and they were a great, great story. If we're voting on this, I can only assume we're looking at it from an American standpoint, not the world. If we were voters in italy I'd say WC, but as far as what got the most coverage in the USA, etc...

I actually haven't, considering I had a brother who was mentally challenged who died. And I'm not playing a sick joke. Everyone says "are you retarded" in jest, and that's whatever, I do it too, but to call somebody with an actual disability "retarded" always kind of rubs me the wrong way. Not trying to guilt trip, just letting you know why I take issue with things like that..

It was a great game, probably the best of the year (although USC/ND was pretty epic too) but from an outsider's perspective I don't think it quite matched up. Maybe it was the slightly undramatic ending with Vince just walking into the end zone untouched, maybe it was the botched lateral from Bush, but the game just didn't seem as tightly competetive as others I'd seen. From a Texas fan's standpoint though, I would easily see how you could consider it one of, if not the greatest game ever. We're all homers like that to some extent :)

Duke lacrosse rape scandal 3rd.
I agree with your top one (as does ESPN, as their Year in Review ended with Vince Young on the field with the tape raining down on him)...it was so hyped a game, and it lived up to it until the very last second.
Kobe is 2nd, I agree...but the Duke thing is not that important in the scope of the year...an incident being blown out of proportion as it was...TO had more examples of that than Duke did. It may show a trend of bad reporting and media sensationalism, but, that's about it, since it became a non-issue in the end.
George Mason FTW!
That's my third...it shows true evidence of a trend we had seen..mid-majors going places

I missed the Kansas first round game when they lost to Bucknell two years ago because I went to a party with a girl...when I got back to my room (alone), I saw the score and was so pissed...biggest mistake I've made it a long time. Not that me watching the game would have made a difference, but, I just wanted to be there to see that team off....and I missed it for nothing.
