I've not heard much of them/him except for on the split they did with australian band Blueline Medic who happen to be one of my favourite bands. So anyone deemed worthy by BM is worthy by me :P. The Ted Leo side was quality though.

now that living with the living has really had some time to sink in with me. i'm on the fence with it to be honest, it's a shame 'cause i was really looking forward to this one. musically it's on par with his other material, but lyrically... not as flash i don't think & it takes away from the record a bit. i enjoy his pure pop sensibilities, so when he sort of tried to put a bit of a message with the album... i don't know, i wasn't feeling it

what does everyone else recon?

Ilovepoprock

Living With The Living is one of the best of 07', but it has been a fairly mediocre one at that.

El_Jeffe
08/16/07, 06:23 PM
righto, it's taken enough time haha, but the new album is really warming up to me. first i didn't mind it, then i just about hated it & now i bloody love it. as i said before (above) it's a very interesting record musically, it's no tyranny of distance, but still very good in it's own right

yea that seems to be the general consensus mate, that it's definitely a 'grower' of an album, even amongst the real diehard teddy fans. took its time with me, that's for sure. it's really really good musically i reckon, probably more so than shake the sheets, but then again that's coming from me/a huge tyranny of distance fan haha

Actually, my introduction to Ted was Hearts of Oak which I love. For some reason and Im not sure why, I havent checked out Tyranny of distance but I will get right on top of it. Nice to see a Ted Leo thread around here. For some reason, I never thought to search for one. His set at Lollapalooza was pretty good. First time I saw him actually and got to see lots of other great stuff. (Ben Harper!)

Dr. Acula
10/14/07, 06:24 PM
I finally got my copy of Tyranny of Distance a week or so ago and I fucking love it....passion like few others....also, the more and more I listen to the new album, I adore it.

Also, if you havent heard, Ted's wife is fighting cancer right now so as much as he wants to be by her side during this tough time, hes gonna be touring to help pay the bills and such with the shitty ass healthcare in this country...if you can, go out and support the man.

El_Jeffe
10/14/07, 06:43 PM
hell yes! tyranny of distance always has been & probably always will be my favourite ted album, everything about it is so awesome. timorous me has an irish jig vibe haha, doesn't get much more awesome. brilliant from start to finish though, classic album

i only recently heard about his wife, bloody terrible. if he was ever in nz (not only would his poor wife get some decent healthcare) but i'd be the first in line for his live gig, showing some support. tremendous talent, hope it all works out for them both

I don't understand why Living With the Living gets so much crap. It's a much better record than Shake the Sheets, which is already a very good album. Tyranny and Hearts of Oak are in a league of their own though.

i threw on the tyranny of distance this morning before my lecture (& just put it on again), soo good. everyone needs to check it out. either that or i'll start bloody making an individual "modern classics" thread about it haha. people seem to listen to those. seriously so good

well, the day dawned & dried the grass on the ground
someone up & died without a sound
& though we looked for you, well, you couldn’t be found
you were already on your way, dear
& i saw them call as you walked down the street
but tall through it all, you’d admit no defeat
despite the grief that you get from everyone you meet
but open up & let things change, dear
now we don’t ask for medals, we don’t ask for praise
we work hard instead, & then we walk away
but when the question still pends at the end of every day
oh, open up to what it’s saying
so the weight of the world, it won’t get you down
you make what you wear & you don’t wait around
you give ‘em what they want (or as much as you can)
like you’ve done all along, & you’ll do again
but who do you love? who do you love? who do you love?
so the weight of your will will stave off decline
& you won’t stop that war, but that don’t stop you trying
you say all the words that move all our friends
& you work ‘til the clock has gone ‘round again
but who do you love? Who do you love? Who do you love?
& so goes the most of our freedom of speech: we live for the city, we work for the beach
& when the weekend seems to be just out of reach
just make the most of what you’re paid, dear
your love’s a ghost, and that’s why we’re delayed here

everyone seems to have the ted bug lately, lovin' it!

Love Ted Leo/Rx. I'm so bummed that I didn't go to the show they were playing with Against Me! at The Black Cat. I listened to Shake The Sheets nearly every other day last summer. What a great album.

How I love Ted Leo. Serious man-crush. Saw him last week and played a great set (though short) including "Timorous Me", "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?", "Counting Down the Hours", "Little Dawn", "Army Bound", "The Angels Share" and some others Im forgetting off the top of my head. Played a new song....sounded pretty damn good. Cant wait for a new album.

sounds soo funkin' awesome. next time you see him, hold up a "ted, sign up to ap.net" banner, so i can convince the bugger to do a tour of new zealand

Haha. Will do! Just out of curiosity, Ive always wondered this but how often do bands from the US come out there? It's gotta be pretty rare right? I guess it evens itself out cause Im sure I'll never get to freakin see Xavier Rudd!

oh we get more than you might think, especially the big acts. billy joel is coming, the boss, elton john, buddy guy & dylan have been recently, stevie wonder is playing 6 hours away in a couple days time. but i have an exam, so i missed out. you have no idea how incredibly gutted i am about that, but oh well, hopefully there'll be a next time

but smaller bands... hard to say. we do get a heap, but it's usually bands i'm not too into. but every now & then someone like the bouncing souls will head over & a lot of bands like thursday etc play the festivals, not that i'm into really them either haha. get a good amount of ska & reggae & for some reason blues though, so that keeps me happy

Ted Leo's playing a benefit show in CT for this kid that recently passed away. All the profits go to his family. Ted really is a superhero.

Listening to and enjoying Hearts of Oak. It has the same sort of charm as Pavement does.

Ted Leo is losing to Valencia in the March Mayhem thingy. It's just not right. More people need to be exposed to the glory that is Ted Leo and the Pharmacists!

good bump, can't believe ted it still so overlooked/unheard of by so many members on ap. unless you guys hate great music, what's stopping everyone from checking him out? this isn't about gaining any "indie cred" or whatever the hell else, this about discovering some fantastic new music for yourselves to enjoy for many many years to come

i'd suggest picking up the tyranny of distance soon as

i agree, maybe we need to start a Ted Leo awareness thread. i thought they would be a lot more popular on this site than they seem to be.

I've been trying to find a torrent of ANYTHING Ted Leo, but it's all out of seeds. Shake the Sheets is a great song though.

No problem. I couldn't find a link to Shake The Sheets, but The Tyranny of Distance (the one I linked you to) is a fantastic album. Has some of his best songs on it ("Biomusicology," "Under The Hedge").

Hearts of Oak and Living With The Living are great albums, as well. Make sure to check out the songs "Who Do You Love," "I'm A Ghost," "Counting Down The Hours," "Me and Mia" and "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone" too.

I love pretty much all of his discography, haha.

I've come to the conclusion that my favorite Ted Leo song is most likely "Bottle of Buckie", mainly because I learned to fingerpick with that song.

My god, so much love for this man and this band. Top notch stuff. Shake The Sheets is probably my favorite by him, but you can't go wrong with any of his stuff. Even Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead is really good, if just for the cover of Six Months in a Leaky Boat and the solo version of The High Party.

bumpin for the new album. it's out there.

in short, it's good. Don't know where I'd rank it in relation to the other albums, but I'm a fan of it so far. The beginning of "Mourning in America" rules, though.
