View Full Version : Listen To Bill Gates

In an apparent contradiction to the RIAA's stance, Bill Gates acknowledges (http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/12/14/bill-gates-on-the-future-of-drm/) the problems with DRM, and instructs people to just buy CDs and rip them to stay legal.

Common sense, imagine that.
Too bad Gates doesn't run the RIAA.

Frlz. The man says so much unbiased, intelligent shit - I love him. He admires Apple, speaks about DRM, and whatnot. Props, Sir Gates.

Wow! Never would have suspected DRM encryption to be problematic!

Good man.
the mac part is pretty funny
Let's say the Led Zeppelin discography was available on iTunes (maybe it is? I didn't look).
Let's also say I don't own it, in any form.
If I'm gonna spend $10 per album (they have 10 albums), then I'm going to spring for the physical disc form in the boxset for about $120 (vs $100 on iTunes). God forbid I spend $100 on the discography only to lose it in a computer crash, or something similar.
When I buy the discs, I have a physical copy, and I can also make XX amounts of electronic copies to protect myself. It's one thing to buy a song or two I like on iTunes, but I'd never go for full albums, let alone full discos.

I do the same - I have a bunch of hard drives where I have my itunes library on one (some 300gb) anyway -- and I have another with just a backup of all my music. Plus, all the physical copies on some 6 huge bookshelves at my house. Nothing (to me) will ever beat owning a CD copy. When someone allows you instant access (download) and then ships the physical copy to you the same day -- then you'll have a life long customer in me. I want to download the CD I want now, but be guaranteed a hard-copy. Include a subscription model for a service (music like water), and I'm sold.
I am also interested a model that keeps a "backup" of my purchases on another server -- so I can download them again if need be.

If you own something - you're allowed to make a copy of it. I don't know exactly what that means anymore -- the legalistics (is that even a word?) seem to change daily.
logistics?
i dont know, hah.

Exactly, this is what I do. My fiance thinks that I am crazy for always going to the record store to buy cds instead of the more convenient iTunes, but I just can't do it. I also backup to an external hard drive.

Well obviously this is going to be his stance no matter what, if he believes in it or not (even though it is the OBVIOUS smart thing to do)
...what is the name of the copy protection that APPLE, Microsoft's biggest competitor, use? Oh yeah, DRM.

well, he isn't the richest dude alive because he's a dumbass. not saying he's the smartest person alive but, shit, he's obviously smarter than most of the people who read this site, including me, seeing as he's sitting on like 50 billion dollars and it's gonna take me six months to pay off the tv i just put on my credit card. yes, i just equated how smart someone is with how much money they have. obviously that doesn't work in all cases (paris hilton?), but i think 'richest man alive because he designed the computers that 95% of the people of the world use' is one of the cases where that works.

DRM is a blanket term for copy protection ("Digital Rights Management"), and Microsoft has their own version of it also.
