Brand New (http://www.absolutepunk.net/brandnew) have added a lyrics page (http://www.fightoffyourdemons.com/lyrics_nnn3.html) to their website.

They are being punks.

The lyrics are obviously not the same as on the record. But why ask people to send in a dollar for them?

they want you to hear your own song. And if it is so important on what the lyrics are then sure. send a dollar. Don't get me wrong i wanted to get the lyrics as well. The real ones. But by this move it just proves what i had felt about their direction and motives.
What they are doing is art. Music is a form of art. Art is open to interpretation. It is up to each individual person to hear their own song. It has already been proved that nobody hears the same exact thing as anybody else. Why do you think hearing your own voice is strange.

It is not with how the ear drum works. It is how our brain perceives this signal. I am positive i hear "bait" on "not the sun". And it makes very much sense to me. If you want to hear Baby. then hear baby.

(here is where the punk move comes in) If you hear baby, then you are not the target market for brand new. They are wanting to move away from the emo stereo type and open people's mind to the rock.

I.E. A better move them tom delonge

It'd be a bigger miracle if people didn't love this album for the simple fact that its a Brand New album. Deja is their best album and this album falls short of that. By a lot. The music is fine. Really my biggest problems with the album are Degausser (because that chorus of kids just turns me off almost right away), the lyrics, the random (and almost unneccessary) instrumental tracks, and the flow (or lack of). Musically its great. But it sounds like I'm listening to a bad mix tape of a bunch of songs thrown together as opposed to something that really moves like Deja did.

holy shit some people in here are fucking idiots.
first of all, who cares if its babe or bait? listen and interpret how you will, thats the beauty of music and poetry. second of all, it says write on the page BABE. stop arguing.

i also think everyone should stop comparing all these albums. they're all entirely different in their own right. this one obviously has such a huge impact lyrically with all the stories behind them, as well as all the religious/faith-seeking references. i just listened to the album while reading the lyrics and it felt like the first time all over again. this record gets better and better everytime i listen to it. deja is a fucking phenomenal album. so is devil and god. why compare them? they were written and recorded over 3 years apart.

and 80minutes: shutup. stop judging somebody's musical taste. lamest thing in the world. not to mention you have K-Fed or some shit as your avatar.
and thus concludes my incredibly unnecessary rant for the evening.

i'm getting sick of people saying "this cd is not as good as deja". Musical taste is all personal opinion. Personally, i haven't been able to decide which i like more at this point. On first listen, i liked deja more but i haven't been able to stop listenening to devil and god. Both cd's have great songs on them so who cares which is better, just enjoy them both.

I'm sick of people comparing this to Deja.....that album blew a lot of people away. They would've repeated themselves if they tried to out do Deja.....they've moved on and the lyrics are not "bad" by any means

"And I’ll let your bad parts in. the bad parts in"

"But life is a test and I get bad marks"

"You’re so good at talking smack, you heart attack
But you're the apple of my eye anyway"

In regards to the 'be my babe/bait' line... i work at a record store and we were playing the CD one night and a guy goes "is he saying 'pee my face'. So now I can't help to think of that even though it is clearly not it. I myself always thought it was babe and never thought twice about it. But I can see where 'bait' could be mistaken.

It's bait. He clearly sings bait on the record, you can here 't' sounds after every time he sings it. Well, you can if you have fully functioning ears anyway. ;-)

It's great to read these lyrics, but they are only 90% right, remember, and I'm sure Jesse doesn't care about that. There have obviously been multiple lines written at various points for all the songs, and he probably can't even remember which ones he sang on the takes that made the record. It doesn't matter - the guy who said earlier that it's art, it's open to interpretation, everyone hears their own song, etc etc... is right. That's the way to look at it I think.

But he does sing bait on the album. I also wish they'd put the chorus to Degausser up but there you go.

im assuming all these "mistakes" are because these are the original lyrics. Two things are weird though. Going along with the "original lyrics" hypothesis if you listen to some early live recordings of sowing season he does say "dont want em back." so that would support the original lyrics hypothesis, except if you also go back to old degausser live recordings theyre not the same as the ones on brand news site, so i dunno.

Brand New changed the lyrics of the songs they played live for quite a while for some reason. They were probably the ver they went into the studio with.

Man's got a point. It's babe, everyone needs to get over it. Yeah, it's 'art' and open to interpretation, but if someone tells me the Mona Lisa's a man I'm going to tell them they are wrong.

These lyrics are on the same level as Deja, when written out. Especially Limosuine, which is now the most touching song of the year. I never thought I'd ever drink and drive, but after hearing this I know there's no way I could do something like that, if it could cause something like what happened there.

Be my serene > Come on, Sherri. As much as people love drama.

Goodbye to sleep
I think this staying up is exactly what i need
Take apart your head
Take apart the counting and the flock it has bred

Goodbye to love
It’s just a ride that will push you
Up right against the wall*
Take apart your head...right against the wall...
Chew it up and swallow it

*(Does everybody really need to know everyone?
Do you really think you're really a part of it?
And is your army really one of some thousands?
And will you declare war on the loony bin?)

But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

Goodbye you liar
Well, you sipped from her cup
But you don't own up to anything
And you think you will inspire*

*(When I arrive will God be waiting and pacing around his throne?
Will he feel a little Old Testament?
And will he celebrate with fire and brimstone
Yeah, I admit, I am afraid of the reckoning)

Take apart your head...yeah, I wish I could inspire
Take apart the demon up in the attic to the left*

But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right...right...right (I'm on my own)

*(Goodbye my love
You wait right here, and they will come and pick you up
I've been on pause
But I’m shaking off the rust
I’ve lost my charge
I've been degaussed
I've been degaussed
I've been degaussed)

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Please say, "I don't mind you under my skin
And I’ll let your bad parts in. the bad parts in"
When we were made we were set apart
But life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
The storm is coming
The storm is coming in

But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I’ll let the bad parts in the bad parts in
Well, you’re my favorite bird and when you sing
I really do wish that you would wear my ring
But no matter what they say, I am still the king
The storm is coming
The storm is coming in.

you are welcome.

I understand your sarcasm. But from the way they have been making this record it is clear they don't care what we think about them. The concerts that are sometimes "shitty". staying away from the media and not communicating with the record label.

So sure. we can choose to trust him. Or we can not

I get what you're trying to say and I whole-heartedly agree. It's all about interpretation. I remember awhile back Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids said in an interview, something like he doesn't like talking about what the songs mean to him because he wouldn't want to skew other people's personal connections and interpreations of the songs. I mean this all makes sense, I don't know why people in this thread automatically attacked you. Just letting you know I see what you mean.

To be my babe, to be my babe.

That's actually really good thinking... it never occurred to me, I think because I never actually realised that the word "to" was in there at all, apart from the very first time. I'd always been thinking that the repeated line was "be my..." and not "to be my...". Listening to it now, I can hear babe for the first time. hallelujah. I'll go back to worrying about vaguely important things now - thanks.

to the guy saying "you're so good at talkin' smack, you heart attack, but you're still the apple of my eye, anyways" is an example of a bad lyric...

taken in context that is one of the best lyrics

before it it says "let's go outside and play 'William Tell'"

William Tell was forced to shoot an apple of his son's head... thus making that apple of my eye metaphor actually pretty good. Plus that part of the song sounds amazing.

What's so bad about the possibility that it's 'babe'?

heroes die
12/16/06, 07:25 PM
Panic! did a lot of stuff like this with their lyrics too. they left out a lot of important lyrics too and changed a lot around.

and i always thought it was "babe"
i also like the "squeeze real soft" more than "squeeze real hard"

yay that means that brand new is like panic! !!! i hate you.

Does anyone else think the three repeats of 7 in "Limousine" is a reference to God? I can't figure out the meaning of the other numbers... but that's what the repeat of 7 does for me (777). I'm probably completely wrong though.

what is the significance of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 in limo
7 being the key number with this song and this band?
Does anyone know

i probably wont be able to find the anwser cause there are too many post
so let me know on my myspae page

I love the lyrics Im little disapointed there are no stabs at taking back sunday anymore

"these are the words you wish you wrote down, this is the way you wish your voice sounds"
"Take a drink and drive yourself home, I hope theres ice on all the roads"
or
Mics are for singing not swinging

Evan taking back sunday has seemed to stop stealing Brand news lyrics (too many to list) hey they even stole the guitar riff from soco ameretto and lime for the last song of the 2nd cd. And they seemed to have stoped Attacking John
"to hell with you (john) and all your friends (the first cd)"
They also stole stray light run lyrics
and in the lyric sheet it is more obvious
The lyric sheet reads
Older and wiser, still filled with resent ment yada yada yada
We get it we get

And straylight run obviously disses taking back sunday
in pretty much every song on the first set of demos

I miss all of that stuff.

It reads babe but since we all agree that the lyrics are not 100 percent. its safe to say he says bait, if he said babe that is actually kinda lame something you would get on a pop punk album

you may have ten years on me, but i am willing to bet that i have quite a bit more than ten IQ points on you.

I.E. A better move them tom delonge

i think if h e counts too 7 to reference the days it took to create the earth, then by repeating 7 he could be emphasising that since that 7th day he's done nothing but continue to rest...

i didnt read the 12 pages of hubbub here just adding that into the mix. I think these lyrics add a whole story element to the cd. I really wish the cd ended with Coca Cola and i REALLY wish that was the last line of that song that would have been perfect. so sadly this cd will just have to be as close to perfect as i've seen in recent years.

It does say "various recordings" on the packaging. Considering the span of time that elapsed while these songs were written and recorded, I think the album flows pretty well. The overarching theme does a good job of tying them all together.

pshh...they misspelled breath on milestone..
And "breathe" on Luca!

I think it might also have to do with the little girl that inspired the song, seeing as she was seven years old when she was killed.

"Seven loves you so much..."

My theory:

These are the lyrics that Brand New wanted. The different or changed lyrics are those that their label told them to change, and they replaced the lyrics that had to be taken out with lyrics that describe how they feel about changing them. makes sense. think about it and listen to what you hear in place of the lyrics on the page.

side note: Millstones lyrics are "I'm my own stone around my neck... makes so much sense, i love it"

Wrong.

Some of these lyrics are amazing.

and for those of you who know the story that Limousine was based on... it's even more amazing after that.

For those that don't... http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/10/18/nyregion/18dwi.html?n=Top%2FReference%2FTime s%20Topics%2FPeople%2FV%2FVitello%2 C%20Paul

really a sad story

about the lyrics though, I think they are some of brand new's best (the "William Tell" apple metaphor in You Won't Know, anyone?)
I hate the William Tell line, and that's not a metaphor - he straight out says it. Haha.

i'm sure there's some sort of reason to include a reference to a cosmonaut who is not fully potty trained...but...i really can't relate to or understand that line.
...although i can't relate to drowning babies either...but at least i understand where terribly dark and disturbing thoughts like that could come from. i think.

sorry I meant double entendre on the "apple of my eye" not metaphor, but the whole william tell allegory because in context it is an extended metaphor, the apple of my eye in itself is a turn of phrase and a double entendre of apple. I happen to like that line though, for the delivery, if nothing else.

I still however, don't understand the bedwetting cosmonaut line, scared to experience new things or something?

Deja and The Devil are on two different levels. Lacey/Brand New compose each album to represent [Lacey's] life at the time of writing, and I think that to compare Deja to The Devil is akin to comparing two individual's lifestyle choices; you can attempt it, but what are you going to get from it?

Is there anybody else who sees this album as a story. I mean, it's right there, there's even (curtain) in the lines of limo, so it seems like a play. There's foreshadowing of the accident in Millstone, and Sowing Season seems like a prologue to the story. Welcome to Bangkok sounds like someone's descent into hell, though I'm not sure what character in the story this would be. Read all of the lyrics together, notice how many things are similar in the songs tying them all together, and see if you can figure out a story. I've got the just of it, but I can't figure it all out.
