LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cable news channel MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage after the controversial talk show host wished AIDS (news - web sites) on a caller whom he dismissed as "one of the sodomites."

Savage had been under fire from gay rights groups since February when the network announced it had hired the conservative commentator to host a TV version of his popular talk radio show.

Saturday's episode of "The Savage Nation," his 15th since the program's debut in March, featured Savage discussing air travel with callers.

One caller began discussing his experiences, and after an unintelligible part of the call, Savage asked him "So are you one of those sodomists?"

When the caller said, "Yes I am," Savage, reclining in a chair with his arms folded and wearing dark sunglasses, responded, "Oh, you're one of the sodomites! You should only get AIDS and die, you pig!" in a clip of the show hosted on the Web site of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

An MSNBC representative was not immediately available to comment, but a source familiar with the matter confirmed that the show had been canceled.

GLAAD, which from the start campaigned against MSNBC's hiring of Savage, cheered the cancellation.

"Michael Savage's latest rant made the clearest possible case for why this kind of behavior has no place on any reputable news network," GLAAD spokeswoman Cathy Renna said in a statement.

In addition to his radio and TV show, Savage founded the Paul Revere Society, which advocates closing the U.S. borders, eliminating bilingual education and ending affirmative action programs.

A message left at a number listed for the Paul Revere Society in the northern California city of Mill Valley was not immediately returned.

Savage, who according to his biography on a network Web site holds a doctorate in epidemiology and nutrition science, hosted his unabashedly conservative show from the well-known liberal bastion of San Francisco.

A network source said the show had averaged 347,000 viewers through its first 14 airings, not including three weekends when the show was preempted by news coverage. It had aired Saturdays at 5 p.m. ET.

Savage was hired around the time the network canceled liberal talk-show host Phil Donahue, who in turn reportedly accused MSNBC of trying to "outfox Fox," a reference to Fox News Channel, often characterized as being conservative.

MSNBC is a partnership of the NBC unit of General Electric Co. and Microsoft Corp.

it just scares to think what kind of people his parents were. because your parents (or a similar figure) teach you to hate, hate is not a thing you are born with.

Anybody ever heard of Dan Savage? its kinda funny to think that those two men have totally different views but the same last name.

Heh... I knew it was only a matter of time until Savage said something too offensive to be on major TV networks.

i just have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who sleeps around, and gets AIDS or any other STD. Exactly. Most of the time, of you get HIV, it's your fault and no one else's. I have to pity for people that do this to themselves.

again, almost every sickness or injure is one's own fault.........so do you not feel pity for anyone?

So the girl with the short skirt in the alley deserves what she gets?

I don't agree with the "just-world" hypothesis that you're touting.

In my opinion, nobody "deserves" to get AIDS. If they're sexually promiscuous, or an IV drug user, then yes, they should have been more careful, and it was poor judgement. But would you actually look in the dying face of a man with AIDS and say "you deserve this"?

Let's say a kid has sex for the first time with a girl who's more experienced. There's no condom around, but hormones being what they are, this doesn't deter him. He gets AIDS, and you're saying he deserves to die for his mistakes? I know it's a simplified example, but I feel that it applies in general. You're responsible for the things that happen to you, but that doesn't mean you "deserve" it.

Michael "Savage" was born Michael Weiner to Jewish immigrant parents in New York. "Savage" is a last name he made up to further his carreer. No one would take a conservative shock jock with the name weiner seriously.

cal1082, what you have posted here is nothing short of disgusting. your bible says to have compassion for your fellow men? even your enemies? or does it only apply to people who live by your standards? stop waving your bilbe and actually read it.

I have a half-half opinion on this.

First, its freedom of motherfucking speech. You liberals got upset when the man was temporarily arrested for threatening Bush's life and act like this is a serious crime against humanity. Wtf?

Second, although it is freedom of speech neither the man that threatened Bush or that host that wished death on that caller have the right to threaten someone. Especially on TV.

I have hoped people would die, but I don't go say it on motherfucking Television.

Someone who robs a gas station because they cant feed their kids? I dont feel sorry for them if they get caught cause there's other ways of getting food. I might feel compasion for them not being able to feed their kids, but not for their actions and punishment.

Also in the Bible it shows many examples of people being punished for wrongs that they did. You don't feel compasion for their acts and punishment, you feel compasion because of their situation.

well played

The thing is, having gay sex isnt a crime or a deliberately dangerous act. the things you lsited are. did the gay guy say "i am a guy who has sex with multiple partners without protection becuase i am careless"? no. he admitted to being gay. for taht he was wished death. that is horrible.

I agree with Cal, Michael Savage has lost my respect. I think its horrible to wish a deathly disease upon someone. Its sick. But on the other hand, I do not sympathise with someone who got AIDS from unprotected sex, homo or heterosexual. Nor do I have sympathy for the IV drug user who contracted AIDS. They knew the risks and were willing to take them, they had it coming. No sympathy from me. However, I do feel sorry for the child who got it from their mother during birth, and I feel sorry for the paramedic who contracted the disease while trying to save and AIDS victim's life. It depends on the situation.
