View Full Version : Athletes and Guns

Just caught the tease for this Karl Malone piece on Cold Pizza, and it's an interesting topic...
His line was "Why do you need a handgun...who have you pissed off that much that you need a gun?"
It got me thinking...when we talk about athletes we always mention their actions in terms of how much money they make, so, why isn't it mentioned when thinks like that Pacers incident a few months back, or now with Tank Johnson (his gun charges apparently connected to that death in some way), that these guys who make so much money need to carry guns as their form of security, especially when they can afford better security measures.
But my real question is, does a team have a right to impose something in a player's contract telling player's they can't own guns, or something along those lines. I know some people use them as a release, just going to the firing range, or hunting, but, does a team have that ability to tell their players "no guns" and with these kinds of incidents, should they?

My personal opinion is that they probably don't have the right, and that just like them saying a player can't engage in dangerous offseason actions, it runs counter to the player's mentality in many cases, but, I would understand a team doing it (Especially a team like the Bengals) seen through a protection idea.

i'm really pro gun control and all but i think the 2nd ammendment trumps a sports team's contract.
i'd prefer it if they didn't carry guns but i think as long as people can get their hands on guns, they'll try to.

i'm pretty unrealistic in my views on gun control and i think guns should not be made available to the general public (licensed owners included) in any fashion, but thats not what i wanted to comment on ...
did anyone see luke scott on this cold pizza piece? he sounds like such a douche.. "what happens if someone pulls a knife on you? you pull this out! ::creepy grin::"

Yeah...I agree there, and that's why I think that last part I proposed is going too far, but, I wouldn;t be surprised to see a team try it.
Because the piece points out that the NBA and NFL already have rules that they can't carry it anywhere in their NBA world really...I wonder when they take the leap and try to control more outside of it

2nd amendment, no way around it.
but, the original intent was to protect the freedom of the country and things are slowly evolving to reflect intent as opposed to technical wording. Still many of these guys are doing it to protect themselves so I really don't think there'e anything we can do about it.
And how fucking stupid is it that some states make the records public as to who owns a firearm? So if someone wanted to rob you, they can know to shoot before they get shot. And I'm sure it causes a lot of people to illegally carry in those states too.

I really don't want to know who has a gun and who doesn't. If I found out any of my friends had them I know I'd act weird around them.

hahah why?
hahah why?
I don't know. I wouldn't do it on purpose. I just think that I'd always think of that first whenever I saw them or talked to them, and thus act weird.

unless the team wants to provide personal security to it's players 24/7, then they should carry guns. Because when you're a celebrity type, you're going to be targeted.
Look at paul pierce. Dude got stabbed like 832 times in a night club, apparently for being Paul Pierce.
Personally, if I were an athlete I would have bodyguards and shit, but that's because I'm not into the whole gun thing. But it's hard to say that a team could put something in their contract that directly contradicts, you know, the constitution.

Yeah...I was hoping that first part would come up...why athletes don't have bodyguards...and I'm guessing it is probably more of an "I can protect myself" kind of thing
