Basically : They use effects on their normal vocals.
They still seem to incorporate real screamo attributes, to me they seem to be a band that actually would be one to fill in the gap from screamo -> pop, being somewhere in the middle, which is not true in the slightest of fake screamo bands. Also, they are a bit more complicated than normal screamo instrumental wise (they use more than 3 cords, and frequently have guitar solos. Screamo/emo has... none? Is that right? I don't know, I'm kind of new, but i've heard a bunch of the actual stuff CTTS, CoC, KFS).

right, i understand. But all the same, they still have a lot of components that you just talked about and other emo bands do. So far the only difference i can see from them to any emo band is that they have fairly technical guitar work.

I've just enver understood how to define a band as emo.

Nevuk

Ok, i'll just say the reasons why "I got this symphony Goin' isn't emo, i'm listening to it now.

Traditional instrumental structure, rather than a hardcore styled one (This is most apparent in the drums). Then, they use effects on the screams, barely noticeable, but this instantly throws it out of being true screamo. The effects on the normal singing is about normal for a pop band, but once again, highly unusual for screamo (but not impossible). The end point in the song with a guitar solo is where most screamo/emo puts in a build-up. If you want to see one of those, around 4:26 in City of Caterpillar's "And You're Wondering How A Top Floor Could Replace Heaven" or Moss Icon's entire "Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly"for an emo rather than screamo example.

The issue, essentially, is there is no quiet/loud dynamic, no contrast in the fall of troy song. It feels like the first half of an emo song, just more technical (although, CTTS is technical and still considered screamo). If the guitar solo was removed(even though it is brief), and replaced with a quiet, gradual buildup, and then the loud abrasive portion was done without effects on the vocals, then it might be considered screamo.
Recap: Drums aren't hardcore(i'm not sure how to say this right). No quiet/loud dynamic, no buildup. Effects on Vox/screaming

Ilovepoprock
12/20/06, 09:39 PM
thank you.

Nevuk
12/20/06, 09:43 PM
You're welcome? I'm not quite sure what to say.

The 2 songs I listed are pretty good examples of actual screamo/emo songs, respectively, if you wanted to listen to some of the true stuff (its very hard to tell what is and isn't sometimes, as you've noticed, you essentially can only tell after listening to a lot of the true stuff, and to be able to explain it you have to understand the theory behind it, even if you can't play it at all).

chickendude
12/20/06, 11:23 PM
If the band has been mentioned by someone outside of this thread, chances are it isn't emo. Just for the record. Most (if not all, I can't think of a single emo band that isn't) emo bands have diy ethics. Seeing as they don't have indispensable amounts of money and time, they are usually lesser known (exception: CTTS and even Saetia, to an extent).

But dammit, back on topic!

Fake tans/tans obtained by laying out are more repulsive than anything else I can think of, even makeup and pushup bras.

emo bands don't sing unless their name is jawbreaker.

basically, FoT is a post hardcore band with math influences. I know this has been covered in this thread already but i really just wanted to talk about jawbreaker since nobody does that since the punk forum died.

Thanks, I think for the most part i'd be able to recognize a band as emo. Are there any other key elements that is easily recognizable for an emo band?

Maybe some sort of informative list.

1. dissonance
2. screaming
3. generally lack of technical playing
4. build ups (as upposed to guitar solo)
5. octave chords

??

Thats a pretty good list, the only other thing i can think of is the occasional breakdown, but those are carried over from hardcore, and fall more under its purview. Also, the hardcore drumming, the drumming is typically either more complex or faster than your typical post-rock band. Just look at 1905's Voice album (even though it has acoustic bits and is probably more hardcore than emo...) for an example of intense drumming, this is especially true for buildups. Like... lots of snares, and little use of bass pedals (Once saw that no band can't have double bass and still be considered one, if you want to add that, but it was referring to hardcore).
