If anyone out there youtubes this for proof, we'll post it. I think, if true, this would be more evidence toward the band doing all they can to get dropped from Interscope.

With the ability that Nettwork has now, these guys could have easily sold this on their own and made twice or three times the money they would have if they didn't release it on Interscope. I do realize, however, that the signing occured about three years ago so I guess that does change things.

Yeah, in an ideal world noone would be in it for the money to any degree. However, this would give them more "creative" ability and still be financially viable.

Trying to get off of a label should be a private matter, not one where you put out a shitty video of a shitty instrumental that comes across as more of a middle finger to their fans who want to see "Jesus Christ" or something else good made into a video.

The MTV2 program is playing at 1PM Eastern tomorrow on MTV2. The BN video plays about 10 minutes into the show. It's Jesse spraypainting a wall, which is first "evil and good are raging inside me." then it cuts to people shooting off roman candles in the dark, and back to the wall where jesse edits his first paint job to read "the devil and god are raging inside me"

I think all of the "clues" - and by that I mean words and interviews written by the band on their website -- it's safe to say exactly why they would do something like this.
Just because it's instrumental doesn't mean it sucks by default. And just because it isn't your thing doesn't mean it sucks. The No Seatbelt Song is my least favorite of theirs, but just because I don't like it means that it sucks.

When a band is on a major, I would think the label would decide the video. That's weird if that's not the case, but I guess they do have a lot of control, or this album would have been marketed and a single would have been released.

yeah, that part is logical. what i was saying is that the format, nate and sam, are a much more interactive band... they did a lot on their own to generate interest in the record. they've always been a very open and communicative band with their fans, which would be about the polar opposite of brand new.
either way, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Uhhhh new tour dates are up.
Uhhhh new tour dates are up.
While we are on the subject of money we'd like to take a second and say a few things.
We would like to express our gratitude to anyone of you who has ever spent a nickel on this band, whether it was getting into a show, or buying a sticker, or a t shirt, or a record. It takes money to tour, and feed a band and its crew, or to record an album (after the label has spent all of yours). You all make these things possible, and in turn keep Brand New a band. But the bottom line is that we would rather this band didn't become something we felt like we were constantly selling to you guys. The only thing we as a band will ever claim authenticity on is our music. Just because all that other stuff comes from us, just because you bought a shirt on our website, or at a show, or got a lyric book in the mail, it doesn't mean it's any more unique or authentic then something you could do yourself. In fact it is less. It's just merchandise. The only "official" part of the band is what you hear on our records or at a show, the sounds we make. Write BRAND NEW on your knuckles or on a wall and it's just a good as some sticker that has an "interscope" logo on it. If you're feeling up to it, save the twenty bucks you were gonna spend on our merch site and write "The Devil and God are Raging Inside me" in marker on your dad's old t shirt. It will scare your parents, cost you nothing, and be about the most limited edition thing anyone will ever own... unless you make two.
What we are trying to say is that the important thing is that you are listening, and not so much buying. Spread it around. Share us with your friends. We thank you for supporting our band, and appreciate that you continue to do so, especially by playing our albums and coming to shows to watch us play. We hope everyone has a good holiday and a joyful new year. We're brushing up on our German and Gaelic.
love,
Brand New (via JTL)

For some reason that's supposed to be a dig at me; however, I also have The Knife as one of my favorite bands (and albums this year) and listen to far more "edgy" music than Brand New.
If you're using Brand New as your "edgy" band while comparing it to my pop-punk favorites (FOB, OI) then I'll use The Knife (or countless other favorites of mine) as my edgy band to compare it to your comparably pop-favorites (BN). It's quite easy to do, but utterly pointless.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic back genius.
And why is all a sudden the cool thing to do is pick a band someone likes and use it as a "dig" in every single post to them? I mean, you have From First to Last, Senses Fail, and Finch in your "favorite band" list -- I'm not bringing those up to try and gain an upper hand in a thread.
I probably should -- I think it's common knowledge around here that all FFTL fans immediately lose all respect. But come on -- those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Ok. I just read all these posts.
Do people even know whats being argued? Or are you just trying to stir shit with Tate?
Not to claim innocence since I fought with Tate the other day...but this started as a debate over the band wanting to get off their label (which I think it's clearly obvious they want off) and now turning into a debate about Tate's liking of certain bands and how you wipe.
Are you just attempting to stir shit for no good reason?
No matter how you spin it....Untitled wasn't a good choice for a video. I like the "song" (yes quotes are necessary since it's more feedback than anything musical) in the context of the album, but I don't get the point unless the label MADE you do a video -- and that was what you chose as the fuck you. There was no clear alternative, since that is obviously agreed upon not the best song to promote the band.

a SONG is a relatively short musical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music) composition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_composition) for the human voice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_voice) (commonly accompanied by other musical instruments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_instrument)), which features words (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word) (lyrics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyrics)).
Colloquially, song is often used to refer to any music composition, even those without vocals (though in music styles that are predominately vocal-based, a composition without vocals is often called an instrumental (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrumental))

no, that would kinda make sense. they probably just wanted to piss off fans. at least that seems to be a common opinion tonight.
i hope brand new gets off interscope because i want to know if my disappointment in the new cd is because of the band or the label, because i need someone to blamespeaking of dissapointment

What a bunch of weirdos. If there is any truth to this, I really have to wonder what's going on in their heads. I love this band and the new cd, but what exactly are they trying to accomplish with this???
I was pissed when they wasted two tracks for instrumentals...
Dude, I think it might be "I could never listen" as well. Especially when it goes all slow-motion and that unwinding sound. It's either "I could never miss it/you" or "I could never listen."

Trying to get off of a label should be a private matter, not one where you put out a shitty video of a shitty instrumental that comes across as more of a middle finger to their fans who want to see "Jesus Christ" or something else good made into a video.
Where has anyone said they did this to piss off fans? Let alone where did enough people say this to make it "common opinion"?
thats what i was refering to. that and all the people complaining about the song in general.
Sorry for me being a fucktard
but what label was BN signed to before hand?
Triple Crown, then they signed to DreamWorks. Right after they signed with DreamWorks, it was bought over by Interscope. I think that's how it went down.

That's one person, not enough to be "common opinion" - and people complaining about not liking the song aren't saying they made the song to "piss off fans" like you implied.
I don't think they're going out of their way to piss off fans, but I think a lot of fans ARE getting pissed off (see their livejournal community for examples) due to their live show and other things they've done lately. But that's not here nor there, nor related to this news post or AP.

i saw it on 2007 artists to watch the other day and caught it right after it started.
since i didnt see the host introduce it i thought it was just a commercial for the new album.. since they spell out the title of the album and all.
so you have to look at it out of the context of it being played on MTV2 (during other music videos) and look at it more as a promo video than a music video i suppose (just a thought/opinion)
and yea the 2007 artists to watch special is playing again tonight at 3 am so check that out if youre interested... and for god sakes someone record it.

Seriously... does anyone have anything better to do then bicker over bs on a forum/news site?
It, nor you, is that serious.
There are discussion threads about news, to discuss the #$%@&! news.
Not to pick fights with the guy who started the site.
Or other people or anyone about #@$% that has nothing to do with the news its self.
If you care so much about someones grammer, the bands they list as favorites, or anything like that, then...
Well then you're a b#$@%.
And you need a life.
You also might need one of these (http://www.myspace.com).
And, so not to contradict myself, I think Brand New making any kind of video for any reason of any song, is great. Even if it involves wiping. And if it's to get them something they want, even better. Good for them.

You guys realize that bands don't get videos on MTV, labels do, right? So if this is a legit video (and it sounds like a promo piece to me, not an actual "Let's put it in rotation" kind of thing), it was placed on the network by Interscope, not Brand New.
Now this is just a crazy, wild hunch, but I don't think the band are "doing all they can to get dropped from Interscope."
You kids need to stop inventing rumors and then spreading them around just so you feel better about your own opinions.

What I say here I do with intentions of sparking more discussion. I have started a thread here:
http://absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=197968
relating to some of my thoughts on Brand New's new album. I encourage all who have the time to read what I have written, think about it, and comment on it for discussion. I am only posting this on here because the discussion in the thread itself has been minimal, and mostly off topic, though the honest replies from certain members (colin farrel) has been exactly what I was looking for in posting this. I think if you like the cd you'll be interested in what I have to say.

I kind of wish the album just ended with Archers though, but I feel the same way about Deja with "Good to know". Don't get me wrong: I love Play Crack the Sky and Handcuffs, but I just wish the album ended on a note more like "Archers" than an acoustic diddy.

I could never love you...
I could never..... what are you saying????
What a bunch of weirdos. If there is any truth to this, I really have to wonder what's going on in their heads. I love this band and the new cd, but what exactly are they trying to accomplish with this???
I was pissed when they wasted two tracks for instrumentals...
let art be art

I really think you have it right there. It's been bothering me for quite some time as to what he was saying, and I think that's it.
Who is I could never love her referring to. At least in my opinion it refers to the drunk driver of the story's lover:

According to (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=5180249#post518024 9) various (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=5179401#post517940 1) sources (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=5179630#post517963 0) (not entirely reliable) there is a video for Brand New (http://www.absolutepunk.net/brandnew)'s "Untitled" circulating around MTV2. If anyone out there youtubes this for proof, we'll post it. I think, if true, this would be more evidence toward the band doing all they can to get dropped from Interscope.
hmmm well it seems you haven't read any of the thousands of comments of the people who said that they have seen the video. It seems people don't read

hmm only like a minute long, and it doesn't even have the spoken parts in it. this makes me think it's not a real video.
on the other hand, it got a little caption at the end and it seemed like the VJ dude came on afterward ready to say "that was brand new..." so this makes me think it is a real video.

it's a brilliant video. it's whole vibe reminds me of that jack kerouac quote.
obviously jesse is a musician; he creates stories just like bob dylan or the beatles did. check "the day in the life" (he refers to it at the end of "play crack the sky"). the songs aren't about his life. they're just songs.
the song has a great vibe to it. sort of eeiry and melancholic. people that are talking about instrumentals "wasting" songs on a record obviously cannot appreciate post-rock bands, or the attempt at setting a mood for the entire album.

Why is it that if someone doesn't like how one band does something, they can't "appreciate" an entire art or genre? I listen to completing instrumental albums all the time -- yet I think "--" is a waste of a track, and a waste of a video. I'd rather have it not be there, or get another "demo" take it's spot.
And I'd love to see a cool concept video (hell, same video even) just with a different song.

although i agree that some of the songs aren't necessarily about his life, but some definitely are. if you look on the little insert for the sowing season single it says "2nd verse adapted from "If" by r. kipling and how it used to hang from my father's wall" and the references to his father in the song it seems like it must be about his life.

i like the video as a departure from the traditional video format in general. even brand new's old concept videos were slightly original but mostly retreads of other videos/films. as a medium, the music video is about as trite as it gets these days. maybe the band was rebelling against it, and not against its fans/label.
as for the song, if it were on a post-rock album, it would be considered at least good. why is it considered filler just because its on a brand new album? its semi-audible vocals and overall eerie mood, in my opinion, compliment the rest of the album perfectly.

probably because they don't like their label and are dissatisfied that they pigeonholed themselves into a scene they probably want out of (imo)

Triple Crown - then Dreamworks - then Interscope.
Wasn't Brand new signed to epitaph at some point for a short time?
