okay, so i want to rip some DVDs just to play on my computer and put on my iPod. i'm not looking to burn them to DVD-RW or anything. so here's my question: do i need a DVD burner just to rip movies, or can i use my regular CD-R drive?

...you need neither. You need a drive that can READ DVDs, but it doesn't need to write them. A CD-ROM drive can't read DVDs, but a DVD burner is overkill for that.
